Book Led Into Mystery

Download or read book Led Into Mystery written by John De Gruchy and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2013 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Led into Mystery is an unanticipated sequel to John de Gruchy's book Being Human: Confessions of a Christian Humanist. It was prompted by the untimely and tragic death of his eldest son, Steve, in February 2010, and the questions this posed about the meaning of life and death from the perspective of Christian faith. A further prompt came as a result of a multi-disciplinary research project on "the humanist imperative in South Africa" (2009-2010). This raised critical questions about being human from the perspective of science, especially neuroscience, as well as other faith and secular perspectives. All these inform the discussion which is an exploration of mystery on the boundaries of human knowledge and experience, engagement with the world and the evolution of consciousness from a specifically Christian theological perspective. The title derives from Karl Rahner's comment that theology is about being led back into mystery -- the ultimate mystery of God disclosed in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and the creative presence of the Spirit in the life of the world. This mystery is an open secret waiting to be explored, expressed and entered into by faith. In doing so, we discern the fragmentary mystery of being human alone and in relationship within the constraints of our time and space. We are rudely encountered by the perplexing mysteries of evil and death, but embraced by the mysteries of goodness and beauty, hope and love. We draw on memory and imagination to develop a language that enables us to explore mystery through the genre of myth, parable, poetry, the novel, music and art, we participate in the mysteries of faith that communicate grace, forgiveness, and freedom which enable us to be more fully human in the life of the world in the struggles for justice and peace.

Book The Four Vision Quests of Jesus

Download or read book The Four Vision Quests of Jesus written by Steven Charleston and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique look at Christian biblical interpretation and theology from the perspective of Native American tradition. This book focuses on four specific experiences of Jesus as portrayed in the synoptic gospels. It examines each story as a “vision quest,” a universal spiritual phenomenon, but one of particular importance within North American indigenous communities. Jesus’ experience in the wilderness is the first quest. It speaks to a foundational Native American value: the need to enter into the “we” rather than the “I.” The Transfiguration is the second quest, describing the Native theology of transcendent spirituality that impacts reality and shapes mission. Gethsemane is the third quest. It embodies the Native tradition of the holy men or women, who find their freedom through discipline and concerns for justice, compassion, and human dignity. Golgotha is the final quest. It represents the Native sacrament of sacrifice (e.g., the Sun Dance). The chapter on Golgotha is a discussion of kinship, balance, and harmony: all primary to Native tradition and integral to Christian thought.

Download or read book The Mystery of Life written by Jim Turner and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half a century ago, a young man who had been attending weekly church services with his family became increasingly aware of conflicts that existed among the different "Christian" denominations. After spending three years studying in a conservative Bible school, he still found himself questioning much of what he had been taught over the years. Every denomination insisted that their beliefs are based on the Bible, but after seeking advice from a number of church leaders, he found that their conflicting answers only raised more questions. He decided that instead of relying on secondhand information from men who claimed to speak for God, it was his own responsibility to know what the Bible actually said about life. He was encouraged by a promise in John 8:32, "You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free." After much prayer and consideration, he vowed to God that he would make memorizing the Bible a daily priority in his life. He has now kept that vow for more than half a century. Although Christian churches and most religions use verses from the Bible to support their religion, the Bible is not a religious book; rather, it is a living legal document inspired by our Creator as a Manual for Life. Little did he suspect that it contained a mystery so profound that it would completely transform his life. Only after the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, rose from the dead, and ascended to the right hand of the throne of God was the most profound mystery the world has ever known""revealed. What you are about to read has the power to completely transform your life. This is not a book about religion or about how to believe in yourself and become a better person. This book contains the literal words and promises of your Creator to every soul that longs to know the truth and fully understand the Mystery of Life. "If any man speaks, let him speak the words of God." (1 Pet. 4:11).
