At around the same time, two young aspirants left their ancestral home in Dwaraka, Gujarat and proceeded southwards in search of fame. Book TipuSultan The Tyrant of Mysore

Download or read book TipuSultan The Tyrant of Mysore written by Sandeep Balakrishna and published by RARE Publications. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a series of books aimed at disseminating the accurate history of India drawn from the primary sources. History writing, especially about the medieval Muslim rule has been fraught with political correctness, controversy, and in several cases, downright falsification. This has occurred mostly with official state patronage. As a result, any attempts to correct this course has been virulently opposed with the result that most urban-educated Indians have now internalized a politically correct version of Indian history. The history of Tipu Sultan too, stands as a glaring instance of this distorted historical narrative. Indeed, we have seen, read, and heard about a lot of people claiming to be freedom fighters and receiving pensions from the Government. Several of these worthies would not have been born before Independence yet they succeed in such blatant manipulations. There are instances of portraying certain rulers and chieftains as true heroes who fought against the British Empire. One such ruler happens to be Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan is widely known as the Tiger of Mysore. Indeed, the image of Tipu battling a tiger barehanded crosses the mind whenever his name is mentioned. But is this the truth? Was Tipu Sultan truly the warrior as he has been portrayed? What exactly is his record of fighting the British? Was he really a freedom fighter as is widely claimed? Sandeep Balakrishna in this well-researched book, explores both the myths and the truth surrounding Tipu Sultan. A must-read for those who wish to learn the true story of Tipu Sultan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the earlier part of the last century, the princely state of Mysore and the University of Mysore bore witness to some truly remarkable personalities. These stalwarts and their lasting contributions left behind a lasting legacy on the intellectual landscape of Mysore and India on the whole. While there were many in their ilk, the author of this work began focusing on those who were primarily associated with the University, to begin with. These biographical pieces were written as feature articles in the ‘Star of Mysore’ newspaper. V. Seetharamaiah, T. V. Venkatachala Sastry, M. Hiriyanna, M. H. Krishna, S. Srikanta Sastri and Brijendranath Seal are among those featured here. These articles were well received by the reading public in Mysore. Incidentally, it was the centenarian lexicographer and litterateur G. Venkatasubbiah who suggested that these sketches be collected in one place as a book. This book is the realisation of such a dream. More than just a chronicle of academicians and writers, this book serves to encapsulate a glorious era in Mysore’s history, where genuine merit, scholarship and integrity meant more than base notions of caste, corruption and nepotism. A glimpse into those times only serves to highlight, rather disappointingly, the slow but inevitable demise of meritocracy in our social polity today

Book Princely India Re imagined

Download or read book Princely India Re imagined written by Aya Ikegame and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s Princely States covered nearly 40 per cent of the Indian subcontinent at the time of Indian independence, and they collapsed after the departure of the British. This book provides a chronological analysis of the Princely State in colonial times and its post-colonial legacies. Focusing on one of the largest and most important of these states, the Princely State of Mysore, it offers a novel interpretation and thorough investigation of the relationship of king and subject in South Asia. The book argues that the denial of political and economic power to the king, especially after 1831 when direct British control was imposed over the state administration in Mysore, was paralleled by a counter-balancing multiplication of kingly ritual, rites, and social duties. The book looks at how, at the very time when kingly authority was lacking income and powers of patronage, its local sources of power and social roots were being reinforced and rebuilt in a variety of ways. Using a combination of historical and anthropological methodologies, and based upon substantial archival and field research, the book argues that the idea of kingship lived on in South India and continues to play a vital and important role in contemporary South Indian social and political life.
