Book Myself Christopher Wren

Download or read book Myself Christopher Wren written by David Weiss and published by Coward McCann. This book was released on 1974 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A 900 page edifice erected atop and around the life and nigh incredible achievements of the 17th century architect, astronomer and mathematician who served under five monarchs and the Commonwealth. In the beginning -- when Weiss deals with Wren's childhood, as the son and nephew of highly placed clerics, as bewildered schoolmate (at four) of Prince Charles at Windsor, as hard-working student at Westminster -- the author's patient, loving detail promises the reader of commercial historicals a comfortable stretch of winter reading. However, there is no strong emotional focus, except possibly Wren's determination to rebuild St. Paul's (a 33 year obsession) and as Weiss picks his way through the politics, religion, science, arts and notables of Wren's 90 years on earth, there is simply no keystone to hold the whole mess together. Also there are implausible moments -- the monarchs and Cromwell all tip their hands to Wren at one time or another and just about anybody who was anybody files by -- from Pepys to Milton ("Cromwell like(d) the way he writes"), Van Dyke to Newton (who makes his "great ocean of truth" observation in casual conversation to guess who), to Nell Gwynn who compliments Wren on his theater design: "Charles, this theater is a great improvement. Spacious, comfortable, light. The town talks of nothing else." As for the architecture, the little learning here is not enough (was "Gothic" referred to as such in the 17th century?): In referring to St. Paul's, the author has King William remark: "Don't bring it up again Mary. If you've mentioned St. Paul's once, you've mentioned it a dozen times." Sound fellow, William..."--Kirkus

Download or read book Across the Open Field written by Laurie Olin and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-eight years ago I went to England for a three-month visit and rest. What I found changed my life." So begins this memoir by one of America's best-known landscape architects, Laurie Olin. Raised in a frontier town in Alaska, trained in Seattle and New York, Olin found himself dissatisfied with his job as an urban architect and accepted an invitation to England to take a respite from work. What he found, in abundance, was the serendipity of a human environment built over time to respond to the land's own character and to the people who lived and worked there. For Olin, the English countryside was a palimpsest of the most eloquent and moving sort, yet whose manifestation was of ordinary buildings meant to shelter their inhabitants and further their work. With evocative language and exquisite line drawings, the author takes us back to his introduction to the scenes of English country towns, their ancient universities, meandering waterways, and dramatic cloudscapes racing in from the Atlantic. He limns the geologic histories found within the rock, the near-forgotten histories of place-names, and the recent histories of train lines and auto routes. Comparing the growth of building in the English countryside, Olin draws some sobering conclusions about our modern lifestyle and its increasing separation from the landscape. As much a plea for saving the modern American landscape as it is a passionate exploration of what makes the English landscape so characteristically English, Across the Open Field is "an affectionate ramble through real places of lasting worth.

Book New Perspectives on Detective Fiction

Download or read book New Perspectives on Detective Fiction written by Casey Cothran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection establishes new perspectives on the idea of mystery, as it is enacted and encoded in the genre of detective fiction. Essays reclaim detective fiction as an object of critical inquiry, examining the ways it shapes issues of social destabilization, moral ambiguity, reader complicity, intertextuality, and metafiction. Breaking new ground by moving beyond the critical preoccupation with classification of historical types and generic determinants, contributors examine the effect of mystery on literary forms and on readers, who experience the provocative, complex process of coming to grips with the unknown and the unknowable. This volume opens up discussion on publically acclaimed, modern works of mystery and on classic pieces, addressing a variety of forms including novels, plays, graphic novels, television series, films, and ipad games. Re-examining the interpretive potential of a genre that seems easily defined yet has endless permutations, the book closely analyzes the cultural function of mystery, the way it intervenes in social and political problems, as well as the literary properties that give the genre its particular shape. The volume treats various texts as meaningful subjects for critical analysis and sheds new light on the interpretive potential for a genre that creates as much ambiguity as it does clarity. Scholars of mystery and detective fiction, crime fiction, genre studies, and cultural studies will find this volume invaluable.

My thanks are also due to my cousin Charles Williamson, who kindly translated Wren's boyish elegiacs into English verse, to Mrs. Lawrence Pigott, to the Reverend Lewis. Book Walking to Vermont

Download or read book Walking to Vermont written by Christopher S. Wren and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguished former foreign correspondent embraces retirement by setting out alone on foot for nearly four hundred miles, and explores a side of America nearly as exotic as the locales from which he once filed. Traveling with an unwieldy pack and a keen curiosity, Christopher Wren bids farewell to the New York Times newsroom in midtown Manhattan and saunters up Broadway, through Harlem, the Bronx, and the affluent New York suburbs of Westchester and Putnam Counties. As his trek takes him into the Housatonic River Valley of Connecticut, the Berkshires of Massachusetts, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and along a bucolic riverbank in New Hampshire, the strenuous challenges become as much emotional as physical. Wren loses his way in a suburban thicket of million-dollar mansions, dodges speeding motorists, seeks serenity at a convent, shivers through a rainy night among Shaker ruins, camps in a stranger's backyard, panhandles cookies and water from a good samaritan, absorbs the lore of the Appalachian and Long Trails, sweats up and down mountains, and lands in a hospital emergency room. Struggling under the weight of a fifty-pound pack, he gripes, "We might grow less addicted to stuff if everything we bought had to be carried on our backs." He hangs out with fellow wanderers named Old Rabbit, Flash, Gatorman, Stray Dog, and Buzzard, and learns gratitude from the anonymous charity of trail angels. His rite of passage into retirement, with its heat and dust and blisters galore, evokes vivid reminiscences of earlier risks taken, sometimes at gunpoint, during his years spent reporting from Russia, China, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa. He loses track of time, waking with the sun, stopping to eat when hunger gnaws, and camping under starry skies that transform the nights of solitude. For all the self-inflicted hardship, he reports, "In fact, I felt pretty good." Wren has woven an intensely personal story that is candid and often downright hilarious. As Vermont turns from a destination into a state of mind, he concludes, "I had stumbled upon the secret of how utterly irrelevant chronological age is." This book, from the author of the acclaimed bestseller The Cat Who Covered the World, will delight not just hikers, walkers, and other lovers of the outdoors, but also anyone who contemplates retirement, wonders about foreign correspondents, or relishes a lively, off-beat adventure, even when it unfolds close to home.

Book Sir Christopher Wren His Family and His Times

Download or read book Sir Christopher Wren His Family and His Times written by Lucy Phillimore and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sir Christopher Wren" is a biography by Lucy Phillimore. He was one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history, as well as an anatomist, astronomer, geometer, and mathematician-physicist. He was accorded responsibility for rebuilding 52 churches in the City of London after the Great Fire in 1666, including what is regarded as his masterpiece, St Paul's Cathedral, on Ludgate Hill, completed in 1710. Excerpt: "The name of Christopher Wren is no doubt familiar to the great majority of English people, and to Londoners especially; but it is to many of them little more than a name with which is connected S. Paul's Cathedral and a now, alas! diminished number of City churches. Yet the great architect's ninety-one years of life were passed among some of the most stirring times of our history, in which his family played no inconsiderable part, and he himself was not only the best architect of his day, but was also the foremost in many other sciences."

Book excerpt: When helicopter pilot Mike Tempest is fired from his job with a London Air Taxi operator, he's short of cash and excitement alike. Temporary salvation comes in the form of the vivacious but businesslike Miss Bird, who offers him one day's work. Though suspicious of her motives, Tempest accepts but regrets it just as quickly when he finds himself on the wrong side of the law. On the run, but with large rewards in the offing, he embarks on a quest to hunt down the villains himself. Along a trail increasingly bizarre, he encounters spectres from his own past, romance in an unexpected quarter, and a plot far deeper than mere extortion. Could a century-old crime still threaten the destiny of a nation? As Tempest skims stormy waters en route to a climactic ending, he has only a vague idea of how to save a situation that began with just a cappuccino coffee at Tower Bridge.
