Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kurt Schwitters was a major protagonist in the histories of modern art and literature, whose response to the contradictions of modern life rivals that of Marcel Duchamp in its importance for artists working today. His celebrated Merz pictures—collaged and assembled from the scrap materials of popular culture and the debris of the studio, such as newspaper clippings, wood, cardboard, fabric, and paint—reflect a lifelong interest in collection, fragmentation, and abstraction, techniques he also applied to language and graphic design. As the first anthology in English of the critical and theoretical writings of this influential artist, Myself and My Aims makes the case for Schwitters as one of the most creative thinkers of his generation. Including material that has never before been published, this volume presents the full range of his prolific writing on the art and attitudes of his time, joining existing translations of his children’s stories, poetry, and fiction to give new readers unprecedented access to his literary imagination. With an accessible introduction by Megan R. Luke and elegant English translations by Timothy Grundy, this book will prove an exceptional resource for artists, scholars, and enthusiasts of his art.

Book The satisfaction of having achieved my aims

Download or read book The satisfaction of having achieved my aims written by Miguel Bornaschella and published by Ediciones Biebel. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The story of my life is simple. So simple and moving like the ones of any other Italian immigrant. But the great desire and will to outdo oneself is what makes the difference between one and other, and I feel I have the satisfaction of having achieved my aims. Neither because I have had some public recognition nor because I got over my fellows, but because I overcame myself. I will feel actually satisfied if I can make people understand that I overcame myself because this is how I feel like every morning and every night. And I still go on trying to do so day after day" (Miguel Bornaschella). "I met Miguel twenty years ago and he has always been good at re-telling anecdotes and stories. Most of them have been written here. Then I have pictured, no doubt, a very moving story. And as time went by, he trusted me to carry out this historical and personal account. He also gave me the chance to ask him again and once more, he gave me the necessary space to intrude on his privacy, his feelings and know much more than what was needed but all that my curiosity required to get a comprehensive view. Thanks to all this I have been able to picture before my eyes a story so moving that I am not sure my pen will be able to provide an accurate description" (Alberto Miramontes).

Book excerpt: Phenomenology in America has developed in unique directions with respect to descriptive analysis and in relation to interdisciplinary fields. Descriptions examines current trends in phenomenology. It begins by reflecting on phenomenological description itself, then takes phenomenology into such areas as time, science and the arts, the social, and into the universities. Ranging from the development of theory by such well-known philosophers as Maurice Natanson and Robert Sokolowski, this collection addresses the topics of pregnant subjectivity, nostalgia, the ethical function of architecture, computer science, and academic freedom.

Book The Invisible Trauma

Download or read book The Invisible Trauma written by David Morgan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any war the health of a fit soldier can drastically change in an instant and so it was for the men and women in the Vietnam war. While the consequences of major physical injury from a high velocity gunshot wound or from shrapnel from an exploding anti-personnel mine or from the explosive effects of an artillery shell or mortar were obvious, the effects of psychological injury were not. Adverse psychological effects resulting from war have been known for many years and labels such as Shell Shock or Battle Fatigue were applied. However since the Vietnam experience and subsequent research, those adverse psychological effects are now known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD can result from experiencing a near death incident, or the violent injury or death of a mate or from treating the major wounds of battle casualties. A high percentage recover from the acute effects of psychological injury but for many, the experience may be the start of a chronic disorder that can affect the well-being of sufferers for the remainder of their lives. Dave Morgan gives a detailed and clear account of his battle with PTSD. He describes his traumatic experience in Vietnam and how PTSD gradually emerged after his return to Australia. He experienced negative thinking, confusion, intense anger, alcohol abuse, and thoughts of suicide. This caused great distress. He expresses his experience adn that of his family frankly and opens a window to understanding the problems of a man suffering from PTSD. In this he has made a valuable contribution and his book adds value to those who are interested in this chronic disorder. There is no completely effective treatment for PTSD, but people like Dave Morgan are doing all they can to reach that goal.

Book The Mysteries of London Vol 1 4

Download or read book The Mysteries of London Vol 1 4 written by George W. M. Reynolds and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-13 with total page 3105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mysteries of London in 4 volumes is a "penny blood" classic. There are many plots in the story, but the overarching purpose is to reveal different facets of life in London, from its seedy underbelly to its over-indulgent and corrupt aristocrats. The Mysteries of London are considered to be among the seminal works of the Victorian "urban mysteries" genre, a style of sensational fiction which adapted elements of Gothic novels – with their haunted castles, innocent noble damsels in distress and nefarious villains – to produce stories which instead emphasized the poverty, crime, and violence of a great metropolis, complete with detailed and often sympathetic descriptions of the lives of lower-class lawbreakers and extensive glossaries of thieves' cant, all interwoven with a frank sexuality not usually found in popular fiction of the time.

Book Sagittae Angelorum

Download or read book Sagittae Angelorum written by David C. Bellusci and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sagittae Angelorum, “arrows of angels,” offers a collection of literary works in poetry, short stories, and drama by four innovative authors—Jeremy Joosten, Joelle Joosten, Dominic Nootebos, and Lucas Smith. Jeremy Joosten engages his readers by creating narratives with animal and nature metaphors. The reader/listener cannot escape his call to existential reflection on life and relationships. He achieves personal self-examination in his one-act play, Kintsugi. Joelle Joosten explores spatial form and structure as part of metaphor in her poetry. In her short story Turbulence, she draws us into the powerful emotions of love and betrayal; and in her historical fiction on Ludwig van Beethoven, the intensity of music reinforces Beethoven’s interior tension. When it comes to love, Dominic Nootebos confronts his audience with the rawness of love and death in both his provocative poetry and his gothic love story, Lost Love of the Haunted and Hollow. Lucas Smith offers us poems where he explores space, syntax, and images leading his reader to a spiritual ascent. In the drama genre, he constructs his play based on the life of Pier Giorgio Frassati. He ends this collection bringing his readers to Mars, then back to Earth, in his sci-fi piece with a spiritual twist.

Book excerpt: A chance encounter on a plane throws together Doha, a fashion designer unhappily married to a leading figure in the Mubarak regime, and Ashraf, an academic and leading dissident. The story of their relationship and Doha's self-discovery runs alongside a young Egyptian's search for the mother he never knew, and these intersecting narratives unfold against the background of political protests that culminate in the overthrow of the regime. A moving and at times humorous story, Butterfly Wings is an extended allegory of Egypt's modern experience of authoritarian rule and explores the fractures and challenges of a society at the moment of revolutionary transformation. Mohamed Salmawy's almost prophetic novel was first published in Arabic immediately prior to the events of 25 January 2011, and has been celebrated as 'the novel that predicted the Revolution.'
