The time is right for alternative economics, reduced working hours, redefining work, security, health and happiness, person-oriented work, labor-intensive investment (not capital-intensive investments) and soft power. The only way to solve the three crises of mass unemployment,m environment destruction and trade imbalance is to move from quantitative to qualitative growth (cf. Hans-Christoph Binswanger). Access could replace excess as enou9gh could replace more. Possessions possess us more than we possess them. The car is more than a metal box but is a whole way of thinking encouraging domination, narcissism, solipsism and self-righteousness. Consumerism goes through the roof, not population. We have enough for everyone's need, not for everyone's greed (cf. Gandhi). The dialogue "Surviving Utopia" with Elmar Altvater and Raul Zelik intimates the wonders and obstacles to utopian thinking. Utopia, the place of no-place, is more a goal and objective than a concrete reality. Economics changes with the times. Once savings was the elixirr and then spending became the elixir. States are different than Swabian housewives. They can become indebted and invest and safeguard their future. What is rational from a microeconomic perspective can be destructive from a macroeconomic perspective. Increasing competitiveness is sensible for an individual corporation or businessperson but may be disastrous if all countries reduce their workforces. Wages are both costs and demand or purchasing power. Neoliberal myths and assumptions give unbounded freedom to capital while demeaning labor as only an inevitable cost. The articles "Learning from History," "Community Centers in O Canada," "Nature as Healer and Teacher," "Cinderella's Sisters and King Midas" and "Shouting from the Caboose" are invitations to ecological, sustainable, respectful and future-oriented change. "We must be wounded to be healed," Dorothee Soelle said. Have we been sufficiently wounded by materialism, imperial hubris, the financial crisis, deregulation, commodification, instrumental rationality, suburbanization and the work religion? In "Surveying Utopia," the emeritus professor Elmar Altvater shares the Polish proverb: You can make fish soup out of an aquarium but you can't make an aquarium out of fish soup. The future should be anticipated and protected in the present, not extrapolated from the present. The future could be full of community centers, free Internet books and soft power if we become active subjects and not passive objects, enthralled in the present and future like children. Music, books and questions make our lives rich and independent of the trickle-down market jingles.

Book excerpt: It is often assumed that innovative technology is an essential resource for the establishment of an information infrastructure. This study on geoinformation infrastructures convincingly demonstrates that technology is an important and far more complex factor than much geoinformation practitioners want us to believe. Three Dutch cases were studied, of which two were intended to develop an infrastructure deliberately applying innovative technology. Due to a constant stream of innovations these cases failed to bring about a working infrastructure. The third case was aimed at establishing a system of large-scale basemaps. These maps acted as a 'narrative anchor', a non-tangible interface between innovating technology and the infrastructure to be developed. Through the narrative anchor, this infrastructure has already existed for over 35 years and is likely to continue.

Drawing on the work of Ernst Bloch, José Esteban Muñoz recalls the queer past for guidance in presaging its future. He considers the work of seminal artists and writers such as Andy Warhol, LeRoi Jones, Frank O’Hara, Ray Johnson, Fred Herko, Samuel Delany, and Elizabeth Bishop, alongside contemporary performance and visual artists like Dynasty Handbag, My Barbarian, Luke Dowd, Tony Just, and Kevin McCarty in order to decipher the anticipatory illumination of art and its uncanny ability to open windows to the future. In a startling repudiation of what the LGBT movement has held dear, Muñoz contends that queerness is instead a futurity bound phenomenon, a "not yet here" that critically engages pragmatic presentism. Part manifesto, part love-letter to the past and the future, Cruising Utopia argues that the here and now are not enough and issues an urgent call for the revivification of the queer political imagination.

Book excerpt: I argue that the years immediately following World War II witnessed a drastic shift in ideology in America and that the popular fiction of the day reveals the tensions and anxieties generated by this change. A new, militant consumerism arose, in which the consumption of material goods came for the first time to be seen as a patriotic duty, both in order to stave off a potential economic recession and to demonstrate the superiority of capitalism to communism. Fostered by the Armed Services Editions distributed free by the United States government to soldiers during the war, the postwar era saw an unprecedented paperback revolution. This genre fiction served to provide symbolic resolutions to irresolvable historical contradictions, as I demonstrate by reading the texts from a Marxist cultural studies standpoint drawn from such critics as Fredric Jameson and Raymond Williams. This study is a work of recovery and of analysis, intended both to preserve texts that might otherwise have been forgotten and to situate them within their historical moment.

By engaging a dialogue with Heidegger, Kristeva, and Irigaray, it offers unique insights into Heidegger's heroic embrace of the manly ethos of National Socialism. Against certain poststructuralist feminist tendencies to throw the baby of intentionality out with the bath water of voluntarism, Huntington interweaves elements of Kristevan and Heideggerian thought in order to reconstruct a linguistically embedded, existentially and affectively rich, dialectical model of willed self-regulation. Pressing Heideggerian ontology into the service of a viable social theory, she argues that this ontology accounts for the utopian impulse in Irigaray's search for a critical poetic reenchantment of the lifeworld and supplies Irigaray with the philosophical foundation for a model of ethical recognition based upon asymmetrical reciprocity.
