Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Village Here artists struggle with all their might for fame; while others, more practical, are aiming after wealth. The disinterested and the mercenary battle on together. The peasant, terribly matter-of-fact, labors from sunrise to sunset, working the earth he loves for the money it brings him, ever saving and economizing. As he gains, he hoards his wealth to buy more earth and (a universal ambition) to pose before his neighbors, much as do the business men in great cities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Village Miss mitford, in one of her letters to Miss Barrett (afterwards Mrs Barrett Browning), says: I have never been without pecuniary care, care that pressed upon my thoughts the last thing at night, to wake in the morning with a dreary sense of pain, a pressure of something that weighed me to the earth. Such, indeed, was her life, made sordid and in part miserable through the diversions of a father, of whom it is difficult to speak with patience or find in his character one redeeming principle. A gambler who grasped and lost in play the fortunes of a wife and daughter in addition to his own, and when all was exhausted, lived upon and gambled with the earnings of his only child - even in dying leaving her only a heritage of debts to the amount of a thousand pounds, which she most nobly liquidated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Village I was born in 1870, in the town of Voronezh, and passed my childhood and youth almost entirely in the country, on my father's estates. As a boy, I was deeply affected by the death of my little sister, and passed through a violent religious crisis, which left, however, no morbid traces whatsoever in my soul. I also had a passion for painting, which, I believe, has manifested itself in my literary works. I began to write both verse and prose rather early in my life. My first appearance in print was likewise at an early date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annals of My Village: Being an of Nature, for Every Month in the Year This thought arose within me during a late walk in the neighbourhood of my village. The morning was cold and clear, but the sun shone bright, and not a cloud flitted across the heavens. The little river flowed over its rocky bed, and on either side, the spreading branches of the oak, the elm, and birch, had intercepted the flakes of snow, and formed a sparkling arcade. Every twig glittered with boar-frost; even the coarser herbage, ferns, reeds, and mosses, seemed as if fledged with icy feathers; while here and there the daphne-laurel and the holly firmly grasped the rugged banks. Their dark shining leaves were gemmed and edged with frozen parti cles, that reflected the colours of the rainbow; and across them, innumerable spiders, as if proud to display their skill, had spun and interlaced their glittering webs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of the Village It was curious to see this beautiful little creature, driving before it a great flock of sheep, ewes, lambs, and all - for sheep are sad cowards! And then, when driven to the hurdles, the sheep, cowards though they were, were forced to turn about; how they would take courage at sight of their enemy, advancing a step or two and pretending to look brave; then it was diverting to see how the little spaniel, frightened itself, would draw back barking towards its mistress, almost as sad a coward as the sheep. The lady sat watching their proceedings with great amusement, and at last addressed the little girl, a nice lass often years old in deep mourning. Whose pretty little dog is that, my dear? Asked the lady. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Village of Youth: And Other Fairy Tales The King was betrothed to a fair Princess named Rowena. She loved her future husband dearly, though his strange malady and the exodus of the old people from his dominions had clouded her happiness, and made her long for some way of alleviating his suffering. When the lovers were together they held no gentle, tender discourse. Uriel would only gaze at his betrothed with mournful eyes, and when she besought him not to be sorrowful he would say, Sweet lady, how can I be other than I am? Each loving word that falls from thy lips, each sweet smile that plays upon thy face, is as a dagger in my heart; for I remember how soon the bloom of youth will pass from thy cheeks and the softness from thy lips. Our Village, too, will become the Village of Eld. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Native Village: And Other Poems I have not published any new volume since the appearance of "Dartmoor," so many years ago. A severe and protracted ilmess has prevented me from writing a poem of any length, and if the reader should occasionally perceive traces of languor in the present publication, I trust that he will impute it to the proper cause. I am not, however, without hope, that, though this volume was composed in some of the most distressing circumstances that ever fell to the lot of man, the ingenuous critic will find, in some pages, reason for commendation.
