Book My Vermont Wildlife Adventures

Download or read book My Vermont Wildlife Adventures written by Martin "Bud" Upmal and published by . This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may have been a Sunfish, a Rock Bass, or if you were lucky a tasty Yellow Perch. My cast was much better than expected. The bait landed well away from the dock in deep water. Setting the rod in the fish pail at my side, I stuffed my frigid hands in my pockets. If only the sun would break through it might retire the frost that still clung to the rocky shore. The rattle of the reel against the inside of the pail ended with a clank, as the pail fell over against the concrete dock. I stood spellbound watching my rod go airborne in the direction the bait had taken moments before. It splashed down and with the appropriate bubbles, promptly sank. As the ripples drifted outward there was a sudden burst of spray. A sleek silver form erupted in a graceful leap. My line was visible trailing back into the water. Then, the first Champlain Landlocked Salmon I had ever seen made one last splendid appearance before vanishing beneath the surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever hooked a really big fish? The excitement cannot be equaled! The rigger suddenly let go. The line spun out for an unusually long time. Looking at the reel it seemed that over half the line was gone. That figured to be at least two hundred yards out. The line eventually slowed and finally stopped running. It was time to reel in the slack. I cranked and cranked until I began to feel a little resistance. Then there was a throbbing in the line and it began to move by itself. I had set a lot of hooks before, but nothing like this time. The line went taut and the reel began to sing as the drag kicked in. The next thing I saw was a beautiful silver blue fish leaping several times its length at what appeared to be at least six feet above the water...

Book excerpt: A collection of stories from Upmal's first three books, along with more recollections - and collections - expanded on. His first wildlife adventures were in the hills around Montpelier, Vermont. As his army career and jobs took him around the world, he continued his pursuit of the hunt whether for game, or fish. From Vermont to Korea, Germany, Alaska to Florida and in between, Upmal at the very least, gave the hunt a shot. "With the first faint crack of breaking brush my body reacted instinctively. Without really knowing the source of the sound or even glancing in its direction I reacted. Swinging my rifle up and around toward the sound, I shouldered it perfectly. Almost as if on cue a stately whitetail buck had broken from cover on a steep canyon wall. There was one last fleeting chance to fill my tag. My first sight of the deer came as the crosshairs of my scope sight settled beneath the stately antlers. The buck was bounding quickly away with his white flag waving. TThe only thing I don't remember was squeezing the trigger..."
