Book excerpt: Olga Mukhina is one of the most talented, young playwrights in Russia. Born in Moscow in 1970, she has already garnered enviable praise from critics and audiences throughout Russia and Europe since her first play, Tanya-Tanya, was performed in 1996. Tanya-Tanyais an atmospheric, poetic tale that observes three couples at a suburban Moscow home who dance, drink champagne, kiss, fall in and out of love, and struggle with dignity and humor to keep some semblance of control over their lives. The parallels with Chekhovian drama are undeniable and clearly intended by the author. You, Mukhina's most recent work, is a love poem to her hometown of Moscow as well as a scathing attack on the apathy of people blindly wrapped up in their own happiness and sorrow.

Book excerpt: Old Raleigh Road is a play in three acts. It is a serious look at the tobacco issue both economically and morally. A tobacco farmer contracts lung cancer and summons his family home while he deals with his impending death. Ultimately, he makes a decision that will affect his entire family and the tobacco industry in his region. Rednecks, the play, was an adaptation of Batchelor's novel by the same name. Rednecks has also been produced. Rednecks was staged in the very bar, by and among the characters that inspired the broad satire. This play is a satirical approach to the ironies and idiocy of two actual killings stunning in their irrationality. . Boson Books also offers Becoming Americans, a historical novel by Donald Batchelor. For an author bio, photo, reviews, and a reading sample, visit bosonbooks.com.

Book excerpt: The Count of Sainte-Hélène: A Balzacian Melodrama takes place in 1817-1818 in Paris, during the Bourbon Restoration when Louis XVIII had been placed on the throne of France at the decree of the Congress of Vienna after the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. This play is based on one of the most sensational cases solved by the first great detective in history, Eugène-François Vidocq, the ex-convict who became head of the French Sûreté (the Security Service of the French police). An altogether extraordinary individual, he was an acquaintance of Victor Hugo, who based both Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert in Les Misérables on Vidocq; and a friend of Balzac, whose character Vautrin is even more closely inspired by and modeled on Vidocq than Hugo’s characters are. Interludes of the Hear: A Play about Marcel Proust, his life and loves, was inspired by my love for that author’s most famous book, In Search of Lost Time. The play goes back and forth in time, as the Student interviews Céleste Albaret, Proust’s housekeeper and general factotum, for his doctoral dissertation. When I read the book, I felt it was as if he were talking directly to me. I am sure many readers have had the same experience. Proust’s penetrating picture of the society of his day in pre-World War One France, and of Paris during the war itself, and his amazing, psychologically insightful portrait of each of his characters, his understanding of psychology that in some ways parallels that of Sigmund Freud, makes his book still relevant in today’s world.

Book Two Plays on Revenge and History

Download or read book Two Plays on Revenge and History written by Brandon Lund and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Plays on Revenge and History compares the human spirit to feelings of nobility and despair in order to resolve the struggles within our character overtime. The developments found within these plays are sometimes lofty and sometimes treacherous and low. When Desmondo speaks of despair, he is not speaking to others. He is speaking to his enlightened purpose as a revenger. When Shaman tells his nephew the story of all he knows, he, in turn, reaches the very summits of nobility in a single story told outright. Ultimately, we come to learn that the human condition must be examined and that it is our nature to ascend to the greater heights of dignity but also to conceive of new problems, as is the case in the baser impulse of revenge!

Book The Magnificent Ahoms Collection Of Two Plays Plays

Download or read book The Magnificent Ahoms Collection Of Two Plays Plays written by Anuttama Ghosh and published by BFC Publications. This book was released on 2023-10-28 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Ahom Dynasty in Assam, though highly interesting, is not widely studied. The two plays depict the story of two Ahom heroes. The first play is about the political intrigue that compelled Prince Sukapha to undertake an adventurous journey to explore new pastures to establish his own kingdom in Assam. The second play is about the brightest hero of the Ahoms, Lachit Borphukon. With his shrewd battle sense he outwitted the Mughal army of a much larger size in the battle of Saraighat. The climax is reached with Lachit's superhuman efforts to motivate his navy to turn the tide. Both the plays have been written keeping in view the possibility of large participation. While relevant stage direction have been provided, there is room for the Director to use creative ideas to show actions on stage. The plays can be performed with symbolic stage although there is scope for making them grand and large scale productions.

Book excerpt: An Italian immigrant who arrived in Canada in 1958, Marco Micone writes bold plays that explore ethnic identity and define immigrant life in Canada. His first play, Voiceless People, portrays the exploitation of first-generation Italian immigrants, while Addolorata focuses more deeply on the role of authority in father/daughter and husband/wife relationships in the second generation. Through the theatrical device of a Brechtian narrator, the audience sees the expectations for material gain that are held so firmly within the Italian community tragically upset by low pay for hard labor. The presentation of Micone's work in English offers important lessons about a struggling community of immigrants.

Book The Fourteenth of July and Danton Two Plays of the French Revolution

Download or read book The Fourteenth of July and Danton Two Plays of the French Revolution written by Romain Rolland and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is perhaps a little surprising to learn that the author of Jean-Christophe has written at least sixteen full-length plays. Most of these, it is true, antedate the publication of the first parts of his epoch-making novel, but since nothing that comes from the brain of Romain Rolland can fail to possess significance and interest, a brief inquiry into his dramatic writings and theories on the drama will reveal an aspect of the man which has hitherto strangely enough scarcely been touched upon. His plays for a people's theater, and his book of projects, are as integral a part of his development as Jean-Christophe itself.
