Book excerpt: What if..? After the death of JFK, Jr., the press was flooded with mesmerizing pictures of him, not to mention some rather lurid tabloid articles. The author found herself drawn into repeated, obsessive fantasies of what knowing him or having a romance with him might have been like. Ultimately, she found herself writing down one of her fantasies as a novel. She changed the names to make clear that this is entirely a work of fiction, her own fantasies, not actually about the real people who inspired her writing. She wove in her own life experiences: her son's Asperger's Syndrome, home birth, and information from a suicide prevention course. She also could not resist drawing in some pet political issues, for instance regarding abortion, pesticide spraying, and drug legalization. The result is an eminently readable romance and psychological study, which should enthrall any woman of a certain age who fantasizes about younger celebrities or anyone who is interested in Asperger's Syndrome.

Book The St Martin s Guide to Writing

Download or read book The St Martin s Guide to Writing written by Rise B. Axelrod and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2010-01-26 with total page 1093 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides instruction in college level rhetoric and writing. It offers readings, a research manual, a handbook and supports a range of approaches to teaching and learning, including collaboration, visual rhetoric, personal writing, writing about literature, writing in the community and the workplace, field research, portfolios, oral presentations, essay exams, and ESL. It contains step-by-step guides to writing specific kinds of essays -- remembering events, writing profiles, explaining a concept, finding common ground, arguing a position, proposing a solution, justifying an evaluation, speculating about causes, and interpreting stories. Because so much college writing requires strong argumentation skills, four of the assignment chapters focus on argumentative writing, and a separate strategies chapter covers theses, reasons and support, counterarguments, and logical fallacies. Three full chapters on research give students useful strategies not only for conducting field, library, and Internet research, but also for evaluating sources; deciding whether to quote, paraphrase, or summarize; avoiding plagiarism; and documenting sources. The authors have included 39 readings by well-known authors and various "fresh" voices, including 12 students, providing well-written examples of the different types of essays and papers that students might be asked to complete.

This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 3527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book disseminates current information pertaining to the modulatory effects of foods and other food substances on behavior and neurological pathways and, importantly, vice versa. This ranges from the neuroendocrine control of eating to the effects of life-threatening disease on eating behavior. The importance of this contribution to the scientific literature lies in the fact that food and eating are an essential component of cultural heritage but the effects of perturbations in the food/cognitive axis can be profound. The complex interrelationship between neuropsychological processing, diet, and behavioral outcome is explored within the context of the most contemporary psychobiological research in the area. This comprehensive psychobiology- and pathology-themed text examines the broad spectrum of diet, behavioral, and neuropsychological interactions from normative function to occurrences of severe and enduring psychopathological processes.

Book The Shaping of Professional Identities

Book excerpt: This thought-provoking research anthology adopts a postmodern stance and fills in a gap of knowledge for the education of professional development in teacher education, health sciences and the arts. Allowing subjectivity and multiple voices, the authors add to the intimate and negotiated knowledge of being and becoming – indigenous, architect, mother, teacher, health researcher, and supervisor. The book provides a selection of personal and far-reaching stories and adds to the reflexivity of memories of critical events. Contributors are: Geir Aaserud, Åsta Birkeland, Bodil H.
