This unabridged memoir follows the awkwardness and immaturity of his youth while allowing him to see God's presence in his life. Jules continues to chronicle pathways leading to a career and the quest to find true love. As he describes his journey, the text bears witness to a growth in faith and an awakening to the many relationships that fit into the puzzle of life. Filled with both triumph and defeat, its pages are able to parallel the shared experience of others. The pieces continue to interlock, and one may consider several instances to be miraculous. The result is a true thankfulness for God's mercy and goodness leading to the recognition of the many blessings afforded a common man.

Full of passion, torment, and chilling beauty, and seemingly unknown to the world, the waltz, its mournful minor key, its feverish arpeggios, appear to dance with a strange life of their own. Julia is determined to master the complex work and make its melody heard. Back home in Boston, from the moment Julia’s bow moves across the strings, drawing the waltz’s fiery notes into the air, something strange is stirred—and Julia’s world comes under threat. The music has a terrifying and inexplicable effect on her young daughter, who seems violently transformed. Convinced that the hypnotic strains of Incendio are weaving a malevolent spell, Julia sets out to discover the man and the meaning behind the score. Her quest beckons Julia to the ancient city of Venice, where she uncovers a dark, decades-old secret involving a dangerously powerful family that will stop at nothing to keep Julia from bringing the truth to light. I defy you to read the first chapter and not singe your fingers reading the rest.”—David Baldacci “One of the best and most original thrillers of the year.”—Providence Journal “[A] novel brimming with emotion, literary description, and psychological suspense.”—The Huffington Post “Will make readers drop everything to immerse themselves in its propulsive dual narrative.”—Los Angeles Times

Book excerpt: A story of the Soil is a collection of over forty classic Punjabi short stories. Combining a rich oral tradition of kissas with tropes from Western literature, Punjabi short-story writers have developed their own unique way of portraying love, longing, ecstasy and malice. Spanning a century, these stories talk of life in the village and the town. There are haunting tales about Partition like 'A Matter of Faith' by Gulzar Singh Sandhu where a horrible tragedy is viewed through the eyes of a child. Along with sensitive accounts of life from across the border in Pakistan are tales by the Dalits who until recently had been rendered voiceless. Amrita Pritam's 'The Vault', a metaphor for a barren womb, explores the identity of a Punjabi woman while stories like Surjit Birdi's 'Flies' reveals the concerns faced by the Punjabi diaspora. Translated and edited by Nirupama Dutt, these carefully selected stories reflect every aspect of life in the land of five rivers.

  • Pages : 107 pages

Download or read book Bloom written by Hank Garner and published by Hank Garner. This book was released on 2014-07-19 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huck, a young man from Weston, Mississippi, sits alone in a diner, pondering the misery of his life. The weather is dreary, much like Huck's life at the moment. An elderly gentleman joins him for a cup of coffee while riding out the storm. Huck's life will never be the same. Bloom has been described as a mixture of The Notebook and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. With its unique twist on the genre, you will find yourself in love with the characters. Love, loss, friendship, and betrayal play out against the backdrop of the deep South. Bloom is the story of a young man's struggle with life, a kindly old soul's wisdom, and a love so powerful that even darkness cannot prevail in the lives of the willful. Full of raw emotion, and a stark, but real view of life, Bloom is a story guaranteed to resonate with readers on many levels, and shows we are more than the sum of our experiences. What people are saying about Bloom: " I (& many others I'm sure) totally get the point!! Struggle, sweetness, magnolias, friendship, redemption, love...." "This book moved me to tears. Sad, happy, and everything in between. True life, true love." "I cried out loud, and I laughed out loud. What a beautiful story!" "I want more!" There is nothing in the world like a wedding in July. Especially if that wedding is in a church in the country. This particular church just happened to be the oldest one in Reid County, just outside of Weston, Mississippi. The wedding plans had been ramping up for months, and it was finally the day. Huck looked out and imagined what it would be like later when the guests packed in the church, and all the guests would be dressed in their best. But for now, it was quiet. The women always take priority on the wedding day; the men just have to show up and do as they are told. Everyone knows that weddings are run by the women. As long as the men do as they are told, all will be OK. Huck had butterflies in his stomach. He had dreamed of this day for so long, and he couldn’t believe it was finally here. There was a time that he didn’t believe that a day like today could happen. Huck heard some of the women coming in the back of the church. He decided that he should get out of the way and let them get settled. He walked out of the front doors of the church and toward the pasture that sat to the west of the church and toward the split rail fence that separated the church from the pasture. Two sides of the pasture were lined with magnolia trees that were in the final stages of bloom. Their petals had fallen over the course of the last week or so and made a surreal picture of white and pink carpeting along the edges of the field of green. Huck walked toward the fence, the journal that he had been carrying all morning under his arm. One hop over and he was walking through the trees. He sat down under a sizeable magnolia and faced the church. This day was happy for so many reasons, but he felt the full weight of it all of a sudden. He had not read the journal in a long time and with today being the start of a new chapter, it felt like a good time to reflect. There were so many times that could not have turned out well. Life has a way of knocking the breath of you when you look back on it. Joy and sadness are close kin. Huck closed his eyes and thought about that day back then. The day that he thought he could not go on. The day that the dreams had finally caught up to him. He flipped open the journal and began to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpts from over 100 travel writings of Europe, from 16th c. pilgrimage diaries thru early specimens of modern tourism accounts to 20th c. impressions from the other side of the Iron Curtain By focusing on east European travel writings, this work enlarges both the documentary base and the terms of the debate over a rich source for discussions of identities and mentalities; knowledge and power; gender; and cultural change. The texts – chosen for their relevance, but literary criteria have also been taken into account – illustrate the variety of ways in which east Europeans have written about the West. Most of the material is presented in English for the first time or, in a few cases, rescued from dusty oblivion in long out-of-print volumes. Each text is introduced with a short passage placing it in context. This is the first volume of the three-part set East Looks West. Vol. 2. Under Eastern Eyes. A Comparative Introduction to East European Travel Writing on Europe, 1550–2000; Vol. 3. A Bibliography of East European Travel Writing on Europe.
