Download or read book My Shrubs Classic Reprint written by Eden Phillpotts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Shrubs Statement continues to be true, though things are more hopeful for these plants they are coming into their own gradually, and the shrubbery begins to be a valued feature of the garden, instead of that worthless jungle with which our fathers were content. Your true gardener naturally seeks and aspires to the unattainable, and Since my patch is but little larger than a table cloth, my desire has always been towards trees. This is the normal ambition of people with small gardens, while others, who possess ancestral acres, and could display a forest and plant pinetums for posterity, will be found to cultivate the moraine, and desire nothing more than enough limestone or granite chips to fill a hatbox. For such is our contrary human nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Shrubs The cultivation of shrubs and trees is a very simple matter, and the principal details can be readily mastered by those who have an elementary knowledge of garden ing. Unless the circumstances are quite exceptional and the nursery is within a few miles of the garden, plants of medium size should be preferred to those that have attained to large dimensions. The latter are costly be cause of the large amount expended in labour upon their preparation by the nurseryman, and they are much more difficult to establish. Sometimes with considerable care they die in the summer after they are planted. In other cases they are so slow in becoming established that they make but little growth for two or three years and when they readily take to their new quarters, it is not unusual for them to be overtaken by plants several years younger at the time of planting. Speaking in a general way, the plants offered at the usual catalogue price are the best, having regard to their cost and the rapidity with which, under ordinary care, they become established and fill the positions assigned them. Book My Garden in Spring Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Garden in Spring Classic Reprint written by E. A. Bowles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Garden in Spring What would they say now if they were led into the garden through which we are now going to be conducted by its creator? Never before having seen a place fdr growing plants in, never having heard the names of Ella combe or wolley-dod - or, if they have, connecting them with no vitalising work or idea - haw will their noses not corrugate in scorn on merely perceiving plants - only plants, plants well grown, plants happy, plants well suited and consulted and made at home. But there are others, less rich, who will be glad of traversing such holy ground, and learning how the hills can be made to yield up their secret, and their children taught to forget the far high lands of their birth, and feel themselves contented and at home within a dozen miles of London. The essence of the real garden is the insignificance of the garden itself; the soul of the real garden lies in the perfect pros perity of the plants of which it is the home, instead -of being merely, by the modern reversal of right laws, the expensive and unregarded colour-relief of its titanically compounded cliffs of stucco and Portland cement. Come into Mr. Bowles's garden and learn what true gardening is, and what is the real beauty of plants, and what the nature of their display. A lowly piece of ground, wandering here and there in gentle natural ravines and slopes. No vast structures, but bank added to bank as the plants require it, and nothing asked of the structure except that it be simple and harmonious, and best calculated to serve the need of the little people it is to accommodate - to accommodate.
