Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Quest of the Arab Horse This book has not been written With any idea that it will add to literature. Indeed, my pri mary obj ect in going to the Syrian desert was not to see things and then over-describe them in a book; I had no use for souvenir Spoons or Turkish rugs. My purpose was but for one thing, and that was to obtain Arab mares and stallions of absolute purity of blood that I could trace as coming from the great Anezeh tribe of Bedouins. That was my fixed idea in undertaking the journey. I had been deeply interested in the Arab horse for many years before I really knew any thing about them. Then, When I thought I had begun to acquire some knowledge of the breed I found that I was not learning much. Information about them, obtainable in this country, was confusing; alleged authorities contradicted each other in every argument; the thing to do, it seemed to me, was to go myself to the home of the Arab horse and there learn of him from his master, the Bedouin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arab: The Horse of the Future Having been requested by Sir James Boucaut to write a preface to the following chapters, I gladly consent, believing as I most firmly do that the Arab is the horse which has laid the foundation of all the best saddle-horses in England, America, India, and on the Continent. Up to the present time more than distinct works, in various languages, have been devoted to the horse, and among these are nearly ninety in Arabic and Persian, which are specially devoted to the Arab breed. Download or read book The New Book of the Horse Classic Reprint written by Charles Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Book of the Horse The Arab, it may not be generally known, has stood still in his own country through out the long period of time during which anything definite has been known about him. He has undoubtedly the same elegant outline, the same beautiful appearance, and the same wonderful stamina for which he has always been noted. But in his native state he is no bigger or heavier than he was when he was first introduced into this country some thing like 300 years ago, and this is probably due to the fact that he is bred in countries which do not possess such land as is to be found in many parts of the United Kingdom. It may be urged that the Arab in his own country does not require the luxuriant grasses upon which English horses are reared, and to some extent that is true; but it may be pointed out that when Arabs, Barbs, and other Eastern sires were brought to this country with a view to improving our native breed, the size quickly increased, even in horses whose blood was almost entirely Eastern. The fact is that England, Ireland, and even parts of Scotland, are eminently suitable for horse - breeding, as are the blue grass plains of Ken tucky, the Percheron district of France, certain parts also of the Northern Coast of France, and many districts of Australia and New Zealand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Every Horse Owner's Cyclopedia The arab OF the present day is said by his countrymen to be the same in form, in courage, and in endurance, with the horse which existed in Arabia before the time of Christ. I have shown that there is every reason to believe that the Israelites who dwelt in Arabia had no horses in the time Of Jacob, and therefore it is scarcely likely that this variety could have arrived at its present state of excellence much before the commencement of the Chris tian era. But beyond the traditional accounts which are preserved in the various tribes, there is no means of arriving at the truth, and they are to be regarded with considerable suspicion. Buflon comes to the conclusion, nevertheless, that Arabia is the birthplace Of this animal, and his opinions are followed by a host Of subse quent writers; but I have already given the reasons for the con trary conclusion. The dry nature of the country, and the scanti ness of herbage, Show that in a wild state the horse could hardly exist there, and that it is only by the care and superintendence of man that the Arabian horse has become so famous. Book The Horses of the Sahara and the Manners of the Desert Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horses of the Sahara and the Manners of the Desert The horsemen of Numidia were famous even in the time of the Romans. The Arab horsemen are in no way inferior to their predecessors. The horse has continued down to these our days to be the chief instrument of war among those martial tribes. A dissertation on the horses of Algeria, which still retain the typical characteristics of both the Barb and the Arab stock, is not only of interest for the lovers of horse-flesh, but also for those who are responsible - for the maintenance of our power in Algeria. The greatest merit of a study of this kind is its perfect accuracy as to facts. I will therefore mention the sources whence I have derived my information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arabian Horse, His Country and People: With Portraits of Typical or Famous Arabians and Other Illustrations, Also a Map of the Country of the Arabian Horse, and a Descriptive Glossary of Arabic Words and Proper Names Even in Baghdad, the feeling was always present that European readers might not relish too full accounts of Arabia and the Arabs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arab Horse In the present work Mr. Spencer Borden brings together a most interesting mass of information regarding the relation of the Arab horse to the life and history of the Arabians, and he has kindly asked me to preface the work by speaking more particularly of the natural history and of the antiquity of this breed. About two years ago I began especially to study the Arabian after having devoted many years to the study of the horse in general. The anatomy, the origin, and the natural history of the Arab has naturally attracted less attention than the relation of the Arab to the origin of the thoroughbred racing horse. So I directed my attention especially to the structure of the animal as a perfect living machine, to the part it has played in the history of the world and to the domestication of horses from the earliest times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Horses: Being Anecdotes From Personal Experience of Individual Horses; With Brief Practical Hints on Breeding, Buying and Selling, Breaking, Shoeing, Doctoring, Etc Horses, ' especially about Arab horses, which have, I think, of late been very unfairly underrated, but of whose value, and as sires, I have a very high opinion still. A really good specimen of the Arab horse is very seldom to be seen in England. The best one of its kind I have lately seen is a light iron-grey with dark points, ridden by a lady in the Park but he is merely a very nice lady's-riding horse. The two brought over from India, and kindly exhibited at the Islington Horse Show, by the Prince of Wales, were certainly high-caste Arabs, but they were by no means good specimens of the breed. They were very pretty, had the true Arab head, and all that, but were far too. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
