Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Annie Besant, My Path to Atheism is one of the most well known works of this notable British writer and women's rights activist. In this collection of essays written over a five-year period, Besant traces her path to atheism while simultaneously outlining her theosophist philosophies. The first essay presented in this collection, On the Deity of Jesus of Nazareth was written before Besant had officially parted with the Church of England. It is a signpost marking the author's final split with Christianity, and is an appropriate first essay in this book. The essay relies heavily on the author's knowledge of the stories of The Bible, as she displays what she interprets as weaknesses in the story of Jesus. Many of the essays in this collection are written in a similar vein to the first. Besant was clearly a scholar of the Bible, and she is thus able to form compelling arguments against many of the stories and theories of Christianity. Later essays see Besant writing persuasively against religious education and blind faith in a set of religious values. On the Nature and the Existence of God is perhaps the most important essay of the collection, in which the author most clearly outlines her argument for atheism. "We know nothing beyond Nature," Besant states, "We judge of the future by the present and the past." My Path to Atheism is an essential work by one of the most noted atheists of the early twentieth century. Those willing to invest time and effort into this collection will undoubtedly be influenced in one direction or another by its arguments. This is a worthwhile read for both believers and atheists alike, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: My Path to Atheism is a remarkable document in many ways, not least that it was written by a woman in Victorian England, not the most open free-thinking of societies, especially for women at that time. It needed a remarkable woman to write such a revolutionary and to 19th century minds, heretical document in a society where the Church had such a stronghold. Besant herself was originally married to a clergyman, but her increasingly anti-religious views and writings led to a legal separation. She went on to become a member of the National Secular Society and thence to co-edit the National Reformer, which put forth ideas on revolutionary ideas at the time such as trades unions, national education, birth control and so on. In 1877 Besant published this book 'My Path to Atheism' which was compiled from a series of lectures in which she surgically dissects the basic tenets of Christianity. As one reads the chapters, one can follow the evolution of her ideas from Theism to Atheism, ending up with a stunning refutation of the Church of England Catechism. Contents: PREFACE TO FIRST EDITION. ON THE DEITY OF JESUS OF NAZARETH A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE FOURTH GOSPEL AND THE THREE SYNOPTICS ON THE ATONEMENT. ON THE MEDIATION AND SALVATION OF ECCLESIASTICAL CHRISTIANITY. ON ETERNAL TORTURE. ON INSPIRATION ON THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OF CHILDREN. NATURAL RELIGION VERSUS REVEALED RELIGION. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raised in a militant atheist family, Sy Garte fell in love with the factual world of science. He became a respected research biochemist with an anti-theistic worldview to bolster his work—and he had no intention of seeking a God he didn't believe in. That is, until the very science he loved led him to question the validity of an atheistic worldview. His journey to answer the questions that confronted him drew him into becoming a fully committed Christian, determined to show others the truth: modern science doesn't contradict God at all but instead supports Christianity. In the first half of the book, Sy begins with how his experiences and quest for knowledge as a student and early in his career brought him to question his materialist assumptions. He goes on to reveal how lessons from physics, biology, and human nature —all presented for lay readers to easily understand—actually argue for belief in God. In the second half of the book, Sy looks at the arguments often presented against God in academic and scientific settings and explains the false foundations on which they rest. For those who have been told that the realities of science call for a rejection of God—but can't quite get rid of the feeling that this shouldn't be true—The Works of His Hands is an ideal reminder that the two don't have to be bitter enemies. Instead, this transformative book shares the beauty of the marriage between science and faith—and how, together, they can bring even the most unlikely to salvation.

Download or read book Hope after Faith written by Jerry DeWitt and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atheism's leading lights have long been intellectuals raised in the secular and academic worlds: Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the late Christopher Hitchens. By contrast, Jerry DeWitt was born and bred into the church and was in fact a Pentecostal preacher before arriving at atheism through an extraordinary dialogue with faith that spanned more than a quarter of a century. Hope After Faith is his account of that journey. DeWitt was a pastor in the town of DeRidder, Louisiana, and was a fixture of the community. In private, however, he'd begun to question his faith. Late one night in May 2011, a member of his flock called seeking prayer for her brother who had been in a serious accident. As DeWitt searched for the right words to console her, speech failed him, and he found that the faith which once had formed the cornerstone of his life had finally crumbled to dust. When it became public knowledge that DeWitt was now an atheist, he found himself shunned by much of DeRidder's highly religious community, losing nearly everything he'd known. DeWitt's struggle for identity and meaning mirrors the one currently facing millions of people around the world. With both agnosticism and atheism entering the mainstream—one in five Americans now claim no religious affiliation, according to a recent study—the moment has arrived for a new atheist voice, one that is respectful of faith and religious traditions yet warmly embraces a life free of religion, finding not skepticism and cold doubt but rather profound meaning and hope. Hope After Faith is the story of one man's evolution toward a committed and considered atheism, one driven by humanism, a profound moral dimension, and a happiness and self-confidence obtained through living free of fear.

This funny and fearless book collects and expands on some of his most popular writings, giving the religious fanaticism of our times the gleeful disrespect it deserves by skewering the apocalyptic fantasies, magical thinking, hypocrisies, and pseudoscientific theories advanced by religious fundamentalists of all stripes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book illuminates just one path to Heaven, but it is a real path. It has been my path.” We are born into a confusingly pluralistic world, often with little guidance. A Path to Heaven begins from an agnostic perspective and walks step-by-step through the middle of Christianity. Having been an analytical young agnostic, Queen addresses the questions that arose in his search for the truth. Having been a youth and campus minister, he addresses the questions posed to him by numerous high school, college, and graduate students in their searches. The first section of this book asks whether the Christian claims are true, addressing arguments for and against the existence of God, the historical validity of the New Testament, and Jesus’s claims about himself. The second section asks what it means to be a Christian. Why is it so hard to be a Christian? How do you find your unique role within the broader Christian mission? How do you live today in light of the eternal Christian hope? With the clarity and precision to be expected from a lawyer and distinguished debater, Queen makes Christianity accessible to everyone.

Book excerpt: In The Evolution of Atheism, Stephen LeDrew argues that militant atheists have more in common with religious fundamentalists than they would care to admit, advancing what LeDrew calls secular fundamentalism. LeDrew draws on public relations campaigns, publications, podcasts, and in-depth interviews to explore the belief systems, internal logics, and self-contradictions of atheists. He argues that evolving understandings of what atheism means, and how it should be put into action, are threatening to irrevocably fragment the movement.
