Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower—a riveting thriller and “all-too-convincing chronicle of science, espionage, action and speculation” (The Wall Street Journal). At an internment camp in Indonesia, forty-seven people are pronounced dead with acute hemorrhagic fever. When epidemiologist Henry Parsons travels there on behalf of the World Health Organization to investigate, what he finds will have staggering repercussions. Halfway across the globe, the deputy director of U.S. Homeland Security scrambles to mount a response to the rapidly spreading pandemic leapfrogging around the world, which she believes may be the result of an act of biowarfare. And a rogue experimenter in man-made diseases is preparing his own terrifying solution. As already-fraying global relations begin to snap, the virus slashes across the United States, dismantling institutions and decimating the population. With his own wife and children facing diminishing odds of survival, Henry travels from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia to his home base at the CDC in Atlanta, searching for a cure and for the origins of this seemingly unknowable disease. The End of October is a one-of-a-kind thriller steeped in real-life political and scientific implications, filled with the insight that has been the hallmark of Wright’s acclaimed nonfiction and the full-tilt narrative suspense that only the best fiction can offer.

Book excerpt: In Rich Sena's close-to-the-heart memoir, readers experience the difficult times, struggles, and impact having COVID alongside the author. This book deals with the pains and joys of surviving a deadly virus. "It couldn't happen to me." Rich Sena's thoughts were aligned with most middle-aged healthy Americans. In July 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic still loomed down everyone's necks, but after a year of the pandemic ravaging the country, no more shutdowns, and lifted mask mandates, there seemed to be less and less of a chance to contract a truly strong strain. After all, Rich had just run a 5K two months before and was preparing to open a restaurant he was going to manage-he didn't have time for COVID-19. Unfortunately, Rich discovered the deadly virus doesn't discriminate, back down, or consider a busy person's schedule and he ended up in the hospital. Over 18 months and five surgeries, Rich fought tooth and nail to beat COVID-19-and won. In his debut book and tell-all memoir COVID-19: My Battle With COVID and How I Survived, Rich walks readers through his struggle with COVID Delta, taking a step-by-step, epistolary approach and including real photos and text messages from his experience. COVID-19 is a memoir health professionals, other COVID-19 survivors, and nonfiction readers will enjoy. Rich's enthralling narrative gives life to the struggles he faced and brings readers into close confidence.

From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens—both pre-existing ones and those newly identified—emerge and re-emerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what—if anything—can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes, and our bodies? In How to Survive a Pandemic, Dr. Michael Greger, physician and internationally-recognized expert on public health issues, delves into the origins of some of the deadliest pathogens the world has ever seen. Tracing their evolution from the past until today, Dr. Greger spotlights emerging flu and coronaviruses as he examines where these pathogens originated, as well as the underlying conditions and significant human role that have exacerbated their lethal influence to large, and even global, levels. As the world grapples with the devastating impact of the novel coronavirus 2019, Dr. Greger reveals not only what we can do to protect ourselves and our loved ones during a pandemic, but also what human society must rectify to reduce the likelihood of even worse catastrophes in the future.

Download or read book Ventilator written by Deion Andrew Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-25 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my encounter with the recent Global Pandemic known as the Coronavirus. Currently, there have been over 200,000 Covid-19 related deaths in the United States, and this country is projected to reach over 400,000 deaths by January 2021. I wrote this book for all those who believe the pandemic is not real or may currently have Covid-19 and don't know what to do. I am living proof to tell you there is hope! I survived 12 days on the ventilator and over 40 days in the hospital. Miracles do happen to those who believe. To all those against wearing a mask because you think the Government is trying to control you, remember the purpose of wearing a mask. It is for your own safety, there is no cure for the virus right now. You may argue wearing a mask won't keep you safe. Tests have proven it is harder for airborne viruses to spread through a mask. Even if it only decreases your chances of catching the virus or passing it to someone else by 20% than it's worth it. We all inhabit the same planet. We must do our very best to keep it safe.

  • Publisher : SCB Distributors
  • Release : 2021-04-09
  • ISBN : 1564748367
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Department of Death written by Lev Raphael and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2021-04-09 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Raphael makes the most of the academic setting of his immensely enjoyable....Raphael’s witty prose enhances a crafty plot." Publishers Weekly starred review Years ago Nick Hoffman was given a position in the English Department at the State University of Michigan because SUM wanted to hire his partner as writer-in-residence, but now he's been unexpectedly installed by his dean as chairman of that department. It's a wildly unpopular choice, and he's suddenly the focus of more animosity from his colleagues than he's ever dealt with before. He can't seem to make anyone happy and can't get a handle on his myriad new responsibilities as an administrator, a position he never wanted. Then tragedy strikes again way too close to home: Someone seeking his help is murdered, and under the shadow of another recent murder, Nick is a prime suspect. Hounded by campus police, the local press, and social media, Nick wonders if this could finally be the end of his career—that is, if he manages to stay out of prison. In the spirit of David Lodge, Francine Prose, Richard Russo and Jane Smiley, Department of Death is Lev Raphael's most blistering satire yet of the current perversity of academic life.
