Download or read book Letters to Raya written by J.R. Thompson and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ashas life is one insecurely floating on the edgesthe edge of sadness, of ill-health and hope. The emptiness left by her eldest daughter Raya, her soul mate, is a struggle she endures daily. Desperate for peace and to reconcile the void, she steals glimpses of her absent daughter in the eyes of her youngest, Maibelle. Together, the two create a life of distractions, enough for Asha to stay buoyant. She reluctantly accepts the challenges of living with Multiple Sclerosis, polluted memories and resentment; her love life and health now equal casualties. For sanitys sake, she clings on to routine, faith, friends and hope. Just as her life is feeling most stagnant, Ashas journey is taken in a new direction; even when faced with the unthinkable, she can begin to hope of a life, she only once dreamt of. Do you remember the gentle hum of planes, Raya? Since coming back to this tiny town quarantined from airports, I cant hear them anymore. Remember how we used to listen to the birds on cheerful spring mornings; how they excited and reminded us that summer wasnt far behind? Well, its the same feeling; that familiar drone of a plane overhead. It always suggested a future adventure or, at least, the possibility of one. The low hum, hinted to you returning, although now, it reminds me of your absence, so, perhaps its a good thing that I am out of the flight path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Words to win the Game of Life, Inward Outward & Upward. Sometimes we fight with the inward man Sometimes we fight with the outward man Sometime and the best way to fight is not to fight at all But to reach to the upward man which is our heavenly father. The best way to find out how a product will work to it's fullest potential is to go back to the instruction manual. Looking at the pictures doesn't do it all the time. Have you ever tried to put something together by looking at the picture in the manual and when you are done there is a part left over and it wasn't an extra part. Often we don't know what it was for until the product stops working or never works properly. That part is usually a part that is needed for inside the product, without it, it just wont last or run to it's fullest potential. So it is with life. We can't look at the picture we have to read the manual and put it together. There is so much more inside if we would just read the manual and apply it. GOD has given us all the parts and he also supplies the upgrades as needed. In this book you will see the inward struggle. Then the outward struggle. Then you will see when I turn towards the manual which is GOD. That when the struggle is over. That's when I reach upward for Victory. This is book one of two.

Book excerpt: This story provides glimpses "back to the future." It is as though Johnny the Mennonite boy could meet his adult self. Does the man reflect the boy or the boy reflect the man he is becoming? This is a selective biography about growing up in a Mennonite community that values both learning and Christian faith. His parents and siblings reinforced his values and learning. The author's interests were nurtured by his community and the rich natural environment of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Many of these interests have passed along to his children and grandchildren. The stories of this book relate to this wonderful heritage. These stories show a child and youth's growth in faith and knowledge.
Download or read book The History of al abar Vol 31 written by and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This section of the History of al-Ṭabarī covers the caliphate of Muḥammad al-Amīn, who succeeded his father, Hārūn al-Rashīd on March 24, 809, and was killed on September 25, 813. The focus of this section is a single event, the civil war between al-Amīn and his half-brother al-Maʾmūn. Before his death, al-Rashīd had arranged for the succession in a series of documents signed at Mecca and deposited for safekeeping in the Ka'bah. Al-Amīn was to become caliph; al-Maʾmūn was to govern Khurasan with virtual autonomy from Baghdad. Al-Amīn could neither remove his brother from office nor interfere with his revenues or military support. Furthermore, al-Maʾmūn was named as al-Amīn's successor, and al-Amīn was forbidden to alter the succession. If either brother violated these conditions, he was to forfeit his rights. It soon became apparent that the good will to carry out these arrangements did not exist. Disagreement broke out when al-Amīn insisted that many of the forces that had accompanied al-Rashīd and al-Maʾmūn to Khurasan return to Baghdad. When the majority of army commanders obeyed the new caliph's orders, al-Maʾmūn was enraged and countered with measures to secure his position. Angry letters were exchanged, with al-Amīn pressing his brother to make concessions that al-Maʾmūn regarded as contrary to the succession agreement. By March 811, military conflict was imminent. Al-Amin demanded that certain border districts be returned to the control of Baghdad. When al-Maʾmūn refused, al-Amīn despatched an expedition to seize the districts. Al-Amīn's resort to force ended in disaster. Al-Maʾmūn's forces, led by Ṭāhir ibn al-Ḥusayn and Harthamah ibn A'yan, quickly closed in on Baghdad. In a siege lasting over a year, Baghdad suffered extensive damage from the fighting and from bombardment by siege engines. Gangs of vagrants and paupers, organized by al-Amīn into irregular units, fought a kind of urban guerrilla war. But, with Tahir and Harthamah enforcing the siege and with most of al-Amīn's associates having switched their loyalties to the winning side, the caliph was forced to sue for terms. These were worked out among representatives of al-Amīn, Tahir, and Harthamah. However, when the caliph boarded the boat that was to take him into Harthamah's custody, troops loyal to Tahir assaulted and capsized the boat. Al-Amīn fell into the Tigris, was apprehended, and was executed that night on orders from Tahir. Thus ended this phase of the civil war. Al-Maʾmūn was now caliph. Al-Ṭabarī i's history of these years includes accounts by participants in the event, diplomatic letters betweenal-Amīn and al-Maʾmūn, Tahir's long letter toal-Maʾmūn on the circumstances of al-Amin's death, and a dramatic eyewitness account of al-Amīn's last hours. Also noteworthy is a 135-verse poem describing the devastation of Baghdad. The section ends with a series of literary anecdotes on the character of al-Amīn.

Book excerpt: A Haitian American woman survives a brutal kidnapping in this “commanding debut novel” from the New York Times–bestselling author of Bad Feminist (The New Yorker). Author and essayist Roxane Gay is celebrated for her incisive commentary on identity and culture, as well as for her bestselling nonfiction and short story collections. Now, with An Untamed State, she delivers a “breathtaking debut novel” (The Guardian, UK) of wealth in the face of crushing poverty, and the lawless anger produced by corrupt governments. Mireille Duval Jameson is living a fairy tale. The strong-willed youngest daughter of one of Haiti’s richest sons, she lives in the United States with her adoring husband and infant son, returning every summer to stay on her father’s Port-au-Prince estate. But the fairy tale ends when Mireille is kidnapped in broad daylight by a gang of heavily armed men, just outside the estate walls. Held captive by a man who calls himself The Commander, Mireille waits for her father to pay her ransom. As her father’s standoff with the kidnappers stretches out into days, Mireille must endure the torments of a man who despises everything she represents. An Untamed State is a “breathless, artful, disturbing and original” story of a willful woman attempting to find her way back to the person she once was, and of how redemption is found in the most unexpected of places (Meg Wolitzer, author of The Interestings).

Download or read book Don t Let Me Go written by Jamila Mikhail and published by Keep Your Good Heart. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On top of battling the normal teenage angst that everyone goes through, Joanie is also reeling from her parents’ bitter divorce and having to cope with her mother’s new boyfriend and father’s new family. Alone in a new town and without friends, she turns to passing the time by indulging in her longtime hobby of making toy models of soldiers and is both amazed and shocked when one of them comes to life. Despite her millions of unanswered questions and having to make sense of new mysteries every day Joanie comes to find a loyal and trustworthy companion in Adler, a lieutenant in the Wehrmacht and a member of the German Resistance during World War II who must also find a way to handle living in modern times on top of being invisible to most of the population. The two of them will have to fight several battles on many fronts in both the physical world and unseen realms as they both try to comprehend Adler’s new existence and piece Joanie’s broken life back together. "Don’t Let Me Go by Jamila Mikhail is an enchanting take on the young adult genre as it features an inanimate toy soldier that not only comes to life but has an existential crisis as well. Here we have a young girl named Joanie, who is struggling to make sense of her parents’ divorce and having difficulty adjusting to the new relationships that her mom and dad found respectively. This turns her life upside down, and she finds herself isolated in the town of Bluepond, where the only true friends she has are her dolls. She has a passionate interest in crafting dolls ranging from film characters, soldiers, and people she meets on a daily basis. Among her masterpieces, Adler, a Wehrmacht soldier and member of the German Resistance, is the most beautiful and most detailed. She is in complete awe of him and one day he comes to life! It appears that Adler is a Keeper—a soul from a different existence who comes into the metaphysical world to provide guidance for fellow humans. Their friendship is then challenged by both physical and metaphysical elements that influence the course of their lives. Reading Don't Let Me Go will make you wish that the story never ends, but you also want Joanie and Adler to find the meaning that they have been looking for. Jamila Mikhail has managed to weave questions and concerns into a plot for this fairy tale. On top of that, she does not want her readers to be limited to being entertained; she provides relevant reading questions at the end of the story as a form of self-evaluation to see if you learned anything from the book. While stories about toys or puppets coming to life have been done before, Don't Let Me Go treats you to elements that will surprise you with the philosophical and spiritual blending to break what is predictable. It is a disservice to simply call this young adult fiction for it offers something far more than fantasy and entertainment." —Reviewed by Vincent Dublado for Readers' Favorite, 5 star editorial review
