Book excerpt: This essential guide for all military families provides helpful advice and reassurance on topics ranging from boot camp, to deployment, to PTSD, from a former "Army brat" turned mother of four military kids. When you enlist in the United States military, you don't just sign up for duty; you also commit your loved ones to lives of service all their own. No one knows this better than Elaine Brye, an "Army brat" turned military wife and the mother of four officers-one each in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. For more than a decade she's endured countless teary goodbyes, empty chairs at Thanksgiving dinners, and sleepless hours waiting for phone calls in the night. She's navigated the complicated tangle of emotions that are part and parcel of life as a military mother. Be Safe, Love Mom braids together Elaine's own personal experiences with those of fellow parents she's met along the way. She offers gentle guidance and hard-earned wisdom on topics ranging from that first anxious goodbye to surrendering all control of your child, from finding comfort in the support of the military community and the healing power of faith to coping with the enormous sacrifices life as a military mother requires. With hard-to-come-by information and encouragement that is like advice from a wise and trusted friend, Be Safe, Love Mom is an essential handbook to membership in a strong and special sisterhood.

Book The Marine the Man My Dad

Download or read book The Marine the Man My Dad written by Teresa Moore and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-04-22 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie, a country boy from Kansas volunteered to serve his country in a time of national emergency. Only one day after his nineteenth birthday, he enlisted into the USMC (United States Marine Corps) on December 8, 1942. He became a corporal, assigned to the Fourteenth Regiment (direct support artillery), Second Battalion, Fourth Division F. Battery, Fox Company. He and his Fourteenth Regiment fought in the famous Fourth Marine Division—a newly created amphibious landing assault fighting force during WWII in the Central Pacific Theater. They fought in the South Pacific against the Imperial Japanese Military. The Fourth Division was made up of the marine’s Twenty-Third, Twenty-Fourth, and Twenty-Fifth Regiments, along with the Fourteenth Regiment (artillery support). In Charlie’s marine records, it shows the following: muster date (April 1943), Battery F. Second Battalion, Fourteenth Marine, Twenty-Fourth Marine (reinforced) Camp Pendleton. The First, Second, and Third Battalions were the direct support battalions of the Twenty-Fourth Regiment. In combat, Charlie’s Fourteenth Regiment, F. Battery was assigned to a single, specific rifle regiment. Keep the Twenty-Fourth Regiment in mind as you read on. Charlie’s Fourteenth Regiment, Second Battalion would be the Twenty-Fourth Marine’s direct artillery support. The Fourth Division was known as the Magnificent Bastards, second to none. They became the fighting fourth. Their home base during the war was on the Island of Maui, Hawaii. This home base for the Fourth Division became known as Camp Maui. These brave marines became known and loved by the locals. They were soon called the Maui Marines, home only to the marine’s Fourth Division. My dad fought in the Kwajalein Atolls on Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima in the South Pacific. These marines fought successfully against the Japanese, but not without a devastating number of loss from the original Fourth Division. This man Charlie, along with Geraldine, adopted me when I was about nine months old. I am the youngest and proudest daughter of the most loving and caring couple I had the privilege to call Dad and Mom. I have the deepest appreciation and admiration for both these special people. My devotion to their memory goes beyond measure. As an orphan in a Kansas orphanage at one time, I assure you the person that said, “Blood is thicker than water,” wasn’t adopted. I say, “Water is just as thick as blood.” This kind of love with an open heart runs deep into the very core of one’s soul. These gathered stories were recalled to the best of my family’s and my memories. There are stories of interest that I think will captivate you while reading. I hope you enjoy this collection of stories during WWII and get a little sense of the marine and the incredible man who was my dad.

Book Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star

Download or read book Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star written by Rich Merritt and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YES, IT ALL REALLY HAPPENED JUST LIKE THIS... Here’s the story of Rich Merritt—the good son, teacher’s pet, Southern gentleman, model Christian student at Bob Jones University, Marine officer, and the not-so-anonymous poster boy for a New York Times Magazine article on gays in the military—whose complicated sexual past caused an international scandal when The Advocate “outed” him as “The Marine Who Did Gay Porn,” putting his life in a tailspin. It’s the compelling, poignant story of how a boy who never listened to pop music, never cursed, and didn’t have his first drink until he was eighteen exploded into a life of drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, prostitution, and pornography. And above all, it’s a triumphant story of self-forgiveness and identity, of a man who refused to allow himself to be defined by the standards of anyone else—gay or straight. Along the way, Rich Merritt writes with humor, compassion, insight and naked truth about: • What it’s really like growing up behind the “Fortress of Fundamentalism” and how he ultimately came to despise their views • The harsh realities of military life under the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” Clinton policy • A real insider’s experience of working in the male porn industry—the good, the bad, and the extremely hot • Why he chose not to reveal his porn past to the New York Times journalist • What it felt like to be the most notorious marine in the world and what it took to come through the fire By turns harrowing and heartbreaking, angry and affirming, Secrets of a Gay Marine Porn Star is that rarest of memoirs—a fascinating slice of life that reads like the most absorbing fiction, but is all true.

Book The Marine and the Flower Child

Download or read book The Marine and the Flower Child written by Dale McInerney and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Marine and the Flower Child By: Dale McInerney, with Michael (Mac) McInerney The story of a Marine overseas and his girl back home in New York. Their letters encompass a first handlook at the Vietnam War and the love forged during a year apart. MAC: “Everything I’ve ever done -whether it was a mistake or a great success - I’ll stand up to - all my letters are a part of me - I don’t care who sees them - you can print them in the NY Times if you want - and I’ll say yup - I sure did say that!” Dale: “Pretty soon there’ll be no room for clothes in the drawer where I keep your letters. Ruby said I should make them into a book. So I got a loose leaf folder and titled it ‘Letters from Mac - July 1968’. I’ll start another for August. The mailman was funny, handing me your letter today he said, “Why don’t you marry this guy, it would save an awful lot of postage.” MAC: “Today has been one of those long days - DaNang started to get hit - the VC are still rocketing and mortaring the city and surrounding installations. When I was on the flight deck, I could hear and see the explosions. Then we started to take medevacs aboard the ship hospital.” Dale: “As long as you are honest with me about what you’re doing in Nam, I’ll rest a lot easier. I believe there is basic reason at work in the universe, we met at that specific time, to make sure both of us knew that we had a reason for staying alive. We are going to stay together.” MAC: “I must have started six letters without getting past the second line. After a year apart I have nothing left to say - and everything to say. I know, for both of us - we’re tired of missing each other - tired of living in the past and the future - it takes the life right out of me - and having you involved in all of this - tears me apart. But loving you fills me with more happiness than I ever dreamed possible.”
