Book excerpt: It is 1925 and India’s struggle for independence is in disarray, impeded by factionalism among its leaders and rising incidents of unrest across the country. Meanwhile, having withdrawn himself from active politics, Mahatma Gandhi is in an ashram immersed in what he considers the most important undertaking of his life—the creation of a community that is wholly dedicated to the highest standards of self-discipline, tolerance, and austerity. Into this world comes a young British woman named Madeline, the daughter of a British admiral. Madeline has set her heart on becoming Gandhi’s greatest disciple. Madeline’s wish to serve him soon becomes an all-consuming desire to be near him at all times. Because her adoration of the great teacher is in direct conflict with his exacting moral and spiritual codes, Gandhi struggles with wanting to distance himself from her, yet wanting not to let go of her love and friendship. Using words preserved in their letters and diaries, and drawing on the reminiscences of others, the author has created a compelling fictional narrative based on the extraordinary friendship that lasted over two decades between these two people. Book Bapu in My Dream

  • Release : 2022-10-06
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 143 pages

Download or read book Bapu in My Dream written by R. P. Ghosh and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From freedom fighters to the plight of women, the bounties of nature, and the beauty of flora and fauna... RP Ghosh has traversed themes beautifully and seamlessly in this wonderful collection of poems. Born in 1944, at ‘Narail’, a suburb town of ‘Jessore’ district (now in Bangladesh) of undivided India, Ghosh found himself hurtled into the turmoil of life in pre-Independence struggling as a refugee, along with his parents and relatives. The collection offers us a peek into the life of the poet as a young child displaced from the world he knew, on account of the Partition. One must read the poem, Poverty, My Loving Stepmother’ for a portrait of life in those turbulent times. The menagerie of poems also delves into the poet’s musings during the pandemic, another turbulent time in his life. One gets to see the happenings of the last couple of years through his eyes when the world was held hostage by the pandemic that claimed the lives of thousands of people. “If it is considered as an offence; and I am sentenced to death, I shall greatly accept it as an attainment of my soul’s salvation which is the ultimate desire of every human being.” The longest and loveliest poem in the collection is on Bapu or Mahatma Gandhi. The poet’s beautiful description of the ‘father of Nation’ brings to the fore his admiration for Bapu as well as the sorry state of affairs today. In short, the collection juxtaposes wistful hope and harsh reality in a most evocative way.
