Book The Thorny Road to Success

Download or read book The Thorny Road to Success written by Karl Maramorosch and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Maramorosch may be best known for his accomplishments as a top scientist, but the story of how he became such a success has never been tolduntil now. Born in Vienna in 1915, his family moved to Poland, and he fled with his wife, Irene, to Romania in September 1939. They spent four years in Polish refugee camps and were in Soviet-occupied Romania until October 1946, before coming to the United States in January 1947 on an immigration visa. But they did not arrive unscathed: Maramoroschs father died in the gas chamber in Belzec in 1942, and his mother also died at the camp. His brother died in the Kolomyya jail on Yom Kippur in 1942. His wifes closest relatives died in Treblinka in 1942. The inseparable couple refused to let any of that stop them from forging ahead: He began a scientific career that spanned more than sixty years, and she became a librarian at the New York Public Library, where she worked thirty years. Maramorosch recalls the painful losses of the past and the brutalities of war, but he also celebrates his love for his wife and life in The Thorny Road to Success.

Book My Success in America

Download or read book My Success in America written by George Welcel and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Welcel, a native of Germany, wrote this autobiography more than thirty ears ago, but it was not until now that he felt compelled to have it translated into English, where he’s lived for forty-six years. As someone who lived under communism for thirty years, he knows all too well its dangers, and he’s grown increasingly concerned by the left-wing democracy he’s seen becoming popular in the United States of America. In this book, he reveals how his pregnant mother was transported to a labor camp from the Warsaw Uprising and how his father died at Auschwitz. Against all odds, his mother survived and was liberated by the Americans before traveling back to her native Poland with the author in her arms when he was just a baby. He also highlights how he became one of the few Polish immigrants to America to achieve success, becoming a successful real estate broker and investor. Moreover, he warns against the dangers of allowing the left to continue its power grab unchecked. Join the author as he shares an inspiring story of success and urges Americans to fight back against the rising tide of socialism and communism.

The contributors are recognized leaders in civil society, government, academia and schools. Their works chronicle the profound effect armed conflict, political transition, and the increasing openness the region has experienced on education. It is a significant achievement as it is the work of individuals who are involved in the field and have a first hand perspective on issues of education in the region. The essays shed light on the reality of the educational reforms: they are far from beeing linear progressive processes, on the contrary, they are very often paradoxical and even controversial.

Book Own It

Download or read book Own It written by Clare Beckton and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women today are bombarded with exhortations to “lean in” and break through glass ceilings—but we are only encouraged to do so as long as we don’t forget our “primary” duties, such as running a household or providing caregiving for children and aging parents. While trying to meet unrelenting demands in both professional and domestic arenas, we struggle to succeed in a system that has not yet fully adapted to our needs or our perspectives, even in this modern age. Despite these obstacles, we can indeed control our lives and define our own success according to our passions, our talents, and our ambitions. Coming from a poor, rural childhood in Saskatchewan and rising to an executive-level career in the nation’s capital, author Clare Beckton forged her own path to empowerment and success by trial and error along the way. With a balance of pragmatism, candour, and insight, Own It speaks to women everywhere while demonstrating how to truly lay claim to life on your own terms.

Book Therapy with Older Clients Key Strategies for Success

Download or read book Therapy with Older Clients Key Strategies for Success written by Marc Agronin and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic strategies and tips for doing effective therapy with elderly clients. What is it like to be 106 years old? What are the mental health needs of someone this old, and for that matter, all elderly? Can we, as clinicians and caregivers, ever really understand old age and provide for their needs adequately? How can we prevent the physical problems they face from overwhelming the patience and care that we give? What are the most effective therapeutic tools that underlie all successful therapy work with older clients? Caring for the elderly is complex, challenging work. Often they are wrestling with a unique set of medical, psychiatric, and social challenges, all set against the backdrop of their approaching mortality. The therapist’s job is to successfully navigate these challenges without dwelling on the inevitability of physical decline, and to provide the most compassionate, valuable treatment possible. It is with this guiding principle in mind that Marc Agronin, a dedicated geriatric clinician with years of on-the-ground experience, offers a sensitively-written and eminently practical guide that addresses the therapeutic challenges, and uncovers the top strategies for compassionate and effective work with the elderly. Therapy with older clients, Agronin argues, requires a sensitivity to the tension between the body’s physical decline and its simultaneous capacity for mental growth and maturation. Therapists must learn to handle these seemingly opposing forces with varying client types and in different settings, and reconcile their own fears of aging, disability, and death. At times this therapeutic relationship can be difficult: medications are often not as effective as they are in younger clients, and the elderly often view change at such a late stage of life as pointless. However, Agronin encourages therapists to work with creativity and passion, persisting in their efforts by retooling their approaches, shoring up patience, and remembering that the very presence of a caring listener can bring a spectacular transformation to even the most debilitated individuals. An understanding of aging alone does not make an effective therapist, and Agronin offers key strategies—illustrated through real-life case examples—for dealing with countertransference, performing age-guided evaluation, working with caregivers, and handling end-of-life issues. He explains the impact of aging on the major psychiatric disorders, providing direction on how to cultivate empathy and understanding for a range of age-specific challenges. Agronin offers a compassionate, insightful narrative that explores the nuances of successful rapport-building and problem-solving that can enrich the lives of the elderly. In doing so, he gives readers a better understanding of what it means to grow old, and how cultivating a respectful, productive relationship—one that is inspired with curiosity and energized with creativity—can bring joy and affirmation to older clients.
