Book The Matryoshka Memoirs

Download or read book The Matryoshka Memoirs written by Sasha Colby and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A granddaughter explores the story of her Ukrainian grandmother’s survival of Hitler’s forced labor camps Irina Nikifortchuk was 19 years old and a Ukrainian schoolteacher when she was abducted to be a forced laborer in the Leica camera factory in Nazi Germany. Eventually pulled from the camp hospital to work as a domestic in the Leica owners’ household, Irina survived the war and eventually found her way to Canada. Decades later Sasha Colby, Irina’s granddaughter, seeks out her grandmother’s story over a series of summer visits and gradually begins to interweave the as-told-to story with historical research. As she delves deeper into the history of the Leica factory and World War II forced labor, she discovers the parallel story of Elsie Kühn-Leitz, Irina’s rescuer and the factory heiress, later imprisoned and interrogated by the Gestapo on charges of “excessive humanity.” This is creative nonfiction at its best as the mystery of Irina’s life unspools skillfully and arrestingly. Despite the horrors that the story must tell, it is full of life, humor, food, and the joy of ordinary safety in Canada. The Matryoshka Memoirs takes us into a forgotten corner of history, weaving a rich and satisfying tapestry of survival and family ties and asking what we owe those who aid us.

Book excerpt: When Sara Rose returns to live in her recently deceased grandmother’s Tasmanian cottage, her past and that of her mother and grandmother is ever-present. Sara’s grandmother, Nina Barsova, a Russian post-war immigrant, lovingly raised Sara in the cottage at the foot of Mt Wellington but without ever explaining why Sara’s own mother, Helena, abandoned her as a baby. Sara, a geneticist, also longs to know the identity of her father, and Helena won’t tell her. Now, estranged not only from her mother, but also from her husband, Sara raises her daughter, Ellie, with a central wish to spare her the same feeling of abandonment that she experienced as a child. When Sara meets an Afghani refugee separated from his beloved wife and family, she decides to try to repair relations with Helena – but when a lie told by her grandmother years before begins to unravel, a darker truth than she could ever imagine is revealed. Matryoshka is a haunting and beautifully written story about the power of maternal love, and the danger of secrets passed down through generations.

Book excerpt: Lieutenant Anthony Sattill, head of Manhattans Crime Analysis Team, is assigned to investigate murders at the Neighborhood Financial & Legal Services. The case is very personal to Sattill because the wife of his best friend is one of the victims. The investigation starts with the murders at the storefront and wends its way to a rave, a street gang, the murder of a policewoman, a federal drug bust, and a beacon of hope to the downtrodden. Why do Sattills superiors allow his team to be lead investigators in this case that is well beyond the scope of their usual role in the Department? How can the team find the clues that unlock the mystery of a crime that leads to other crimes that give rise to even more questions? With federal agencies stonewalling them, Sattills team must connect diverse leads, disparate facts, and hidden meanings to reach the logical conclusion: that someone of great influence is behind these horrific events. As the team gets close to solving the case, evil lashes out until the final crime and its connection to the others reveals truth.

Book World Turned Upside Down

Download or read book World Turned Upside Down written by Marvin B. Durning and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1955, after assignments at the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) and on board a destroyer, Marvin Durning arrived at ONI's office in Munich, Germany. During this year, he participated in the final stages of transforming Germany from a defeated enemy into a respected democracy, reestablishing its sovereignty, and shepherding its membership in NATO, which also involved rearming America's erstwhile foe. At that time, Munich, like Berlin, was a nerve center for the Cold War. It was crowded with U.S. troops and German and Slav refugees. Radio Free Europe called it home. The city was, Durning writes, “a jungle of competing secret intelligence organizations: British, French, American, Russian, West and East German, Czech, Polish, and others.” Beneath the calm surface of everyday life in Munich roamed agents and double agents who witnessed defections, kidnappings, interrogations that ended in death, and assassinations by bomb explosions and by poison dart. World Turned Upside Down is Durning's account of such activities. Durning served as the de facto executive officer of a small office of German intelligence specialists tasked with routine navy issues. But much more was underway. Known only to his commander, himself, and the yeoman who typed the reports, former admirals of the defunct German Kriegsmarine attended secret meetings at his commander's house in the suburbs of Munich, where they worked to plan and create a future West German Navy. In addition, Durning served as a liaison officer to the Gehlen Organization, the supersecret German intelligence and espionage organization, and he recounts their activities here.
