Book A JOURNEY WITH DYSLEXIA

Download or read book A JOURNEY WITH DYSLEXIA written by Peter James Wilson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A Journey with Dyslexia” is an educational descriptive Essay of 16680 words about Peter (77) and his experiences in overcoming dyslexia. Peter started exploring dyslexia when he was diagnosed at age 23. He has taught himself to read and write and now feels he has the knowledge to help dyslexic sufferers and school teachers. His educational handbook describes procedures for creating neural pathways that could enable sufferers to learn to read and write. Peter experienced frustration, discrimination, lack of confidence, and poor self-esteem. He overcame all the trials. With sixty years of personal experience, Peter now understands what happened to him and continues to progress. In his early childhood, he had many negative experiences that caused extreme stress. He started to realise that he was not stupid and that he might even be intelligent. Through determination, he looked for clues that linked every part of his life and formed a complete picture of his dyslexic experience. He used this to compile evidence of his experience with dyslexia and its many traits. However, with the techniques that helped him, he helped others develop neural pathways. At fifty-five, after purchasing a computer, he wrote a story, fulfilling a lifelong wish. After writing it he found he could read novels, understand the story, its twists and turns, and remember the plot. To date, he has written six unpublished fantasy novels. At sixty-seven, He was diagnosed as autistic and needed to reassess his dyslexic journey in the light of this diagnosis. In his seventies, Peter understood his journey had come full circle. He had beneficial knowledge to share with teachers, students, and parents. He used the strategies he developed for himself to help others.

This growing awareness and understanding of different learning styles has changed the lives of tens of millions of people. When Scott Douthit was growing up in the 1960s, though, no one could explain why it was so difficult for him to succeed in the one-size-fits-all schools he attended. Dyslexic is the remarkable story of Mike Balzano, an undiagnosed learning-disabled child of working class immigrants whose antisocial behavior earned him the name "Crazy Mikey." Failing at everything, he became a garbage collector until crippled by a back injury. He then entered an optical apprenticeship that turned his life around. Balzano believes that the apprenticeship gave him the discipline and self-confidence to begin his journey. He urges parents, teachers, school counselors, and superintendents to expand their current focus of promoting college careers to include promoting careers that require apprenticeships. While difficulty with other subjects is seen as being specific to that subject area, difficulty with reading is often regarded as difficulty with learning. The author has had first hand knowledge of this. The author has lived in the world of the dyslexic. He brings the kind of meaningful insight that is possible only from one who has been there. He details many of the classroom challenges he faced and outlines some of the coping strategies he devised to overcome those challenges. The author describes how dyslexia manifests itself outside the classroom affecting all aspects of an individual's life. His experiences shed new light on the way dyslexia affects the teenager. He shares his social misadventures with such sincerity, frankness and honesty that it allows the reader to feel his pain and to glory in his achievements. The author describes an exercise he has used successfully to allow normal individuals to perform similar to the way the dyslexics perform on spelling exercises. It is an eye opener that provides a better understanding of the dyslexics' plight. The new insights revealed in this work would assist the teachers to better understand the dyslexic students: it would provide greater awareness to researchers: it would give hope and encouragement to parents and be a source of inspiration to dyslexics.
