Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Home in the Alps IN this little volume, much of the matter in which first appeared in the St. Moritz Post, or, as it is now called, the Alpine Post, I have jotted down a few things of interest to the ordinary traveller in Switzerland. To climbers, my notes will be but a thrice-told tale, and one which, doubtless, many of them could tell far better, while not a few of them have already told it elsewhere. The idea of publishing these trifling papers came to me through the necessity of replying to many questions on the subjects to which I refer; for, living as I do in Switzerland, I naturally am supposed to be more familiar with the peculiarities of the country and people than is the ordinary tourist. It thus seems to me that a small book, dealing with some of the various objects of interest usually met with during a summer's tour in Switzerland, might find a corner in a traveller's portmanteau, and so, asking. Book Beyond the Mountain

Download or read book Beyond the Mountain written by Steve House and published by Patagonia. This book was released on 2013-10-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it take to be one of the world's best high-altitude mountain climbers? A lot of fundraising; traveling in some of the world's most dangerous countries; enduring cold bivouacs, searing lungs, and a cloudy mind when you can least afford one. It means learning the hard lessons the mountains teach. Steve House built his reputation on ascents throughout the Alps, Canada, Alaska, the Karakoram and the Himalaya that have expanded possibilities of style, speed, and difficulty. In 2005 Steve and alpinist Vince Anderson pioneered a direct new route on the Rupal Face of 26,600-foot Nanga Parbat, which had never before been climbed in alpine style. It was the third ascent of the face and the achievement earned Steveand Vince the first Piolet d"or (Golden Ice Axe) awarded to North Americans. Steve is an accomplished and spellbinding storyteller in the tradition of Maurice Herzog and Lionel Terray. Beyond the Mountain is a gripping read destined to be a mountain classic. And it

This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "The Eagle's Nest" In the Valley of Sixt; A Summer Home Among the Alps: Together With Some Excursions Among the Great Glaciers I am not sorry for the three years' interval be tween the promise and its execution. The beauty of' the valley seemed to me so remarkable, that I distrusted at first my own impressions and recollec tions, and it was not without a lurking anticipation of disappointment, that I returned thither in 1858, accompanied, this time, by my wife, to whom I had frequently expressed, in no measured terms, my esti mate of the scenery she was about to see.
