Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book For the Love of a Dog

Download or read book For the Love of a Dog written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-07-22 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, humans and canines are different species, but current research provides fascinating, irrefutable evidence that what we share with our dogs is greater than how we vary. As behaviorist and zoologist Dr. Patricia McConnell tells us in this remarkable new book about emotions in dogs and in people, more and more scientists accept the premise that dogs have rich emotional lives, exhibiting a wide range of feelings including fear, anger, surprise, sadness, and love. In For the Love of a Dog, McConnell suggests that one of the reasons we love dogs so much is that they express emotions in ways similar to humans. After all, who can communicate joy better than a puppy? But not all emotional expressions are obvious, and McConnell teaches both beginning dog owners and experienced dog lovers how to read the more subtle expressions hidden behind fuzzy faces and floppy ears. For those of us who deeply cherish our dogs but are sometimes baffled by their behavior, For the Love of a Dog will come as a revelation–a treasure trove of useful facts, informed speculation, and intriguing accounts of man’s best friend at his worst and at his very best. Readers will discover how fear, anger, and happiness underlie the lives of both people and dogs and, most important, how understanding emotion in both species can improve the relationship between them. Thus McConnell introduces us to the possibility of a richer, more rewarding relationship with our dogs. While we may never be absolutely certain what our dogs are feeling, with the help of this riveting book we can understand more than we ever thought possible. Those who consider their dogs part of the family will find For the Love of a Dog engaging, enlightening, and utterly engrossing.

Book It Took a Dog

  • ISBN : 9781723970405
  • Pages : 113 pages

Download or read book It Took a Dog written by Dan Holmes and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-21 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about a Great Pyrenees named Elsa and how she changed my life. I will detail how she went from an abandoned rescue dog at the animal refuge where I continue to volunteer, to my adopting her, bringing her to her forever home, and eventually becoming her therapy dog partner. I will also detail the work we do every week as a therapy dog team and stories about how she's touched and, occasionally, changed countless lives in our 20 months together as a therapy dog team. Many events occurred before we ever met which eventually led me to Elsa, so I'll start at the beginning, before I ever met Elsa. If you're a dog-lover, you must read this book. But if you are, you've probably read a gazillion dog books, so why another one? Because I believe this is so much more than just a good dog book. I promise you'll laugh, cry, and maybe even learn something you didn't already know. If you're a dog-hater, you also need to read this book. Why? Because we have an epidemic of dog- haters in this country, as the countless animal shelters can attest when they see the abuse and mistreatment of dogs entering their facilities every day. Maybe, if you give it a chance, you too could learn something and more readily accept the canine friends that we dog-lovers love. If you're a Great Pyrenees owner, or you know of someone who's owned a Great Pyrenees, like parents, a son or daughter, or just good friends, I hope I've already hooked you by the picture on the cover. The Great Pyrenees is the greatest dog breed ever made by God. You'll want to read on as I'll explain why. And if I've totally pissed off all the Golden Retriever owners out there, hang with me. The Golden Retriever is the most popular dog breed in America, possibly in the whole world. And as Elsa is a rescue dog, we're not totally sure she's a pure-bred Great Pyrenees. She has a soft face like a Golden, so there may be some Golden Retriever in her. So take heart. I love Goldens too. If you're a Christian, you definitely want to read this book! It will be uplifting and a positive experience. I'm a Christian, and I'm not ashamed. I'm proud to call Jesus Christ my Lord and savior. And it's my faith that led me to write this book in the first place, so it is a very important part (maybe the most important part) of my story. If you're a non-Christian, or a Muslim, or Buddhist or Hindu, or practice no religion at all, you need to read this book. If you can open your mind to new ideas and just give it a chance, I promise not to try to convert you to Christianity, but to hopefully give you something positive to think about and chew on. If you're a man, even though we don't show our emotions as much as our female counterparts, I think you, too, can find some humor and much-needed tenderness in this book. If you're a woman, need I say more? Read on, and get your husband or boyfriend to read also. So, I think that about covers it. If you don't fit into any of the above categories, then you aren't a member of the human race and you can crawl back into your cave and I won't bother you again. Otherwise, read on. But most of all, enjoy!

Book excerpt: “Based on the latest findings in the field of canine cognition and behavior, this book is an invaluable resource.” —Hal Herzog, author of Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It's So Hard To Think Straight About Animals Every dog owner knows that along with the joy can come the stress and frustration of behavioral problems, which are expensive to diagnose and treat. Book Free Days With George

Download or read book Free Days With George written by Colin Campbell and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2015-05-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartwarming, true story about George, a rescue dog who helps his owner rediscover love and happiness. Marley & Me meets Tuesdays with Morrie and The Art of Racing in the Rain--get your tissues ready, animal lovers! After Colin Campbell went on a short business trip abroad, he returned home to discover his wife of many years had moved out. No explanations. No second chances. She was gone and wasn’t coming back. Shocked and heartbroken, Colin fell into a spiral of depression and loneliness. Soon after, a friend told Colin about a dog in need of rescue—a neglected 140-pound Newfoundland Landseer, a breed renowned for its friendly nature and remarkable swimming abilities. Colin adopted the traumatized dog, brought him home and named him George. Both man and dog were heartbroken and lacking trust, but together, they learned how to share a space, how to socialize, and most of all, how to overcome their bad experiences. At the same time, Colin relived childhood memories of his beloved grandfather, a decorated war hero and a man who gave him hope when he needed it most. Then everything changed. Colin was offered a great new job in Los Angeles, California. He took George with him and the pair began a new life together on the sunny beaches around L.A. George became a fixture in his Hermosa Beach neighborhood, attracting attention and giving affection to everyone he met, warming hearts both young and old. Meanwhile, Colin headed to the beach to rekindle his love for surfing, but when George encountered the ocean and a surfboard for the first time, he did a surprising thing—he jumped right on the board. Through surfing, George and Colin began a life-altering adventure and a deep healing process that brought them back to life. As their story took them to exciting new heights, Colin learned how to follow George’s lead, discovering that he may have rescued George but that in the end, it was George who rescued him. Free Days with George is an uplifting, inspirational story about the healing power of animals, and about leaving the past behind to embrace love, hope and happiness.

Download or read book Hyperbole and a Half written by Allie Brosh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book Helene Deutsch written by Paul Roazen and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student and protege of Sigmund Freud, Helene Deutsch was one of the most influential psychoanalysts of her time. An early woman analyst, Deutsch was an ardent feminist and a leading proponent of Freud's controversial theories about the psychology of women. Deutsch was also one of the first prominent career women to combine a professional life with motherhood-even though she never resolved her own conflicts over those contradictory demands. At the time of her death in 1982 at the age of 97, Helene Deutsch was the last survivior of Freud's original circle from Vienna. This volume is a definitive account of the life and works of this remarkable-and enigmatic-woman. The author knew Deutsch personally and was given exclusive access to her papers after her death. The private life of Helene Deutsch was as unconventional as her professional life. While Felix Deutsch, a physician who specialized in psychosomatic medicine, was to remain her husband for fifty years and father her son, Martin, their relationship was highly eccentric. Roazen produces evidence that indicates Felix Deutsch may have been homosexual; also that their son was raised primarily by Felix, as Helene was more interested in her career than was Felix in his, and the Deutsches often lived continents apart. With the rise of Nazism, Helene Deutsch departed in 1935 for America She was welcomed in Cambridge, Massachusetts by the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and was made director of the Society's new institute for the training of analysts. Her two-volume "The Psychology of Women, "published in 1945, remains one of the foundations of modern analysis. Roazen's biography is an authoritative portrait of a pioneer of psychoanalysis, and one of the unique women of her day. It will be of interest to psychoanalysts, cultural historians, and specialists in women's studies.

  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book It Took a Human written by Elsa Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hi! My name's Elsa. I'm a dog. That's right, a dog. How can a dog write a book you ask? Well, I did. Now I'm a Great Pyrenees and I have huge paws. When I sit up at the computer, one paw covers half the keyboard. When I have both paws up there, I can't even read the letters. So my master, owner, and best friend, Dan Holmes, actually typed the manuscript for me. But I was right there with him the whole time as he read each section aloud to get my approval before continuing. Mr. Dan knows me better than I know myself, so I think, in the end, he's captured my thoughts exactly. You see, Mr. Dan wrote his own book called IT TOOK A DOG, also available on Amazon. After his oldest son Scott read his book he told his Dad he ought to write a second book but this time from my, the dog's, perspective. Of course, I thought this was a brilliant idea and convinced Mr. Dan this was essential to "tell the WHOLE story." Is it absolutely necessary for you to read Mr. Dan's first book, IT TOOK A DOG, before reading this one? No. My book stands on its own. But it would help, as I tell most of the same stories as in Mr. Dan's book, just from my perspective. So this is a story about me, a Great Pyrenees named Elsa, and how Mr. Dan changed my life. I will detail how I went from an abandoned rescue dog at an animal refuge, to my being adopted and finding my forever home, and eventually becoming a therapy dog. I will also detail the work Mr. Dan and I do every week as a therapy dog team and stories about how we've touched and, occasionally, changed countless lives in our two and a half years together as a therapy dog team. I'll start at the beginning, before I ever met Mr. Dan. So who should read my book? Well, at times, my language can get a bit "salty." Why? Think about it. Who are my ancestors? Wolves, right? And you should hear a wolf talk. Especially when they get into packs, a wolf can cuss like a drunken sailor! So it's in my DNA. But Mr. Dan said "NO, absolutely NOT." This book must remain appropriate for middle-schoolers and above, or for parents who want to read it to their kids. If you're a dog-lover, you must read this book. If you are, you've probably read a gazillion dog books, so why another one? Because I believe this is so much more than just a good dog book. I promise you'll laugh, cry, and hopefully learn something you didn't already know about us dogs and other humans. If you're a dog-hater, you also need to read this book. Why?
