Book My Harvest Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Harvest Classic Reprint written by Richard Whiteing and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Harvest Life has been called a scene of adventure tempered by a little philosophy on the way. It is not exactly my view, but the majority incline to it as the only one that reconciles the rule of thumb to self-respect. Hence, I suppose, the fascination of pure romance in The Arabian Nights, Gil Blas, Tom Jones, or even at a distance from these, the egregious Roderick Random with the due subservience of its hopes of immortality. The earlier romances are mostly of this cast; and I should be glad to get the benefit of it, if only I could plead their license of invention. Happily the adventure being sometimes in the nature of spiritual experience, does not always involve shipwreck and the shooting of lions. But it is invariably events and incidents first, and the moral, if anywhere, only at the end of the journey. The old masters at any rate usually began with a birth as the greatest of all accidents, and never stopped till they had got their hero married at least, and not seldom comfortably entombed. I was born, alas! as far back as 1840; and there is still so much to see. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The definitive book on the subject of plagiarism (The New York Times) is updated with a new afterword about the Internet. What is plagiarism, and why is it such a big deal? Since when is originality considered an indispensable attribute of authorship? Stolen Words is a deft and well-informed history of the sin every writer fears from every angle. Award-winning author Thomas Mallon begins in the seventeenth century and pushes forward toward scandals in publishing, academia, and Hollywood, exploring the motivations, consequences, and emotional reverberations of an intriguing and distressingly widespread practice. In this now-classic study, Mallon proves himself to be one of our most versatile, original, and delightful writers.

Book My First Harvest Or the Leisure Hours of a Youthful Poet Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My First Harvest or the Leisure Hours of a Youthful Poet Though many years have passed since this work was written, and many shades of disappointment have been cast upon it, still never-ceasing hope and patience have borne its pages to the press. In my early days of youth, I mused in the shades of Dreamland and penned its pages in a quiet strain of song. I met and talked with them whom I have named within it; shedding sympathy for them who sighed laments, and yielding them in quiet song their tale of joy or woe. In the silence and darkness of night, while the boughs of Dreamland sighed around me, there appeared to my chamber the good, gray phantom, bearing the brilliant light that lit the young apprentice into fortune. He unfolded to me the tale of his secret fortune, and begged my genius to place it forth in song. In that spiritual-lit chamber I yielded forth his wishes, and gazing far beyond the worlds of mortality, anchored my soul to the spiritland. When I awoke from my labor, all Nature spread glowing before me; I took my lyre to yield her forth a song. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvest Gleanings: A Holiday Book Was travelling in Germany, from Weimar to Frankfort, and had stop ped at a little town one or two stages beyond Fulda; I was stand ing at the window of the inn, which was Opposite to the post-house, and looking at a crowd of travellers who had just been disgorged from a huge eil-wagen, or post coach, which was standing there. Among them was one female, who, before/i was aware, fixed my attention. Although closely enveloped in a winter dress from head to foot, her height, and the easy de cision with which she moved, showed that her figure was fine and well proportioned; and as the wind blew aside her black veil, l had a glimpse of features which still further excited my curiosity. I had time to consider her as'she alighted and walked over to the inn alone. She entered the room at once - it was a sort of public saloon - in which I was sum moued the waiter, whom she addressed in a good humored but rather familiar style, and ordered breakfast; not a cup of chocolate or cafe an Zait.
