Book Did I Ever Tell You about My Grandfather

Download or read book Did I Ever Tell You about My Grandfather written by Prof. Joe Arthur and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe's sister was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, but not Joe. Joe's sister was afforded every opportunity, but Joe got only adversity. Joe was routinely abused by his father, but this is not an "oh, pity me" story. Rather, it is the tale of how Joe's maternal grandfather shared his experiences, strength, and certainties that helped Joe learn how to face life's challenges and grow into a strong and successful man. Between these covers are some of the challenges and obstacles that helped give might to Joe's life. As Joe shares this quest and the lessons his grandfather shared with him, you too will have the opportunity to grow and learn how Joe used these very tools to forge a meaningful and valuable life. Often, when Joe shared these lessons, he would honor with gratitude the lessons from his mentor, guardian, and protector by asking, "Did I ever tell you about my grandfather?" For reasons found in this book, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of all Joe Arthur's writings go to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Covenant House, the Native American Rights Fund, The NAACP, the USS Constitution Museum, and the World Wildlife Fund.

Book A GRANDFATHER S GIFT

Download or read book A GRANDFATHER S GIFT written by James E. Smith, Sr. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my life experiences and also contains the stories I have heard my folks tell while sitting on the front porch after supper. For many years, my maternal grandfather lived with us. He and my dad would swap interesting stories about times when they were growing up and farming with oxen and mules. They talked about the "dummy line" railroads that ran through the forest near our home and told their childhood tales and many other stories I would long for later in life. I wanted to pass this and my life stories down to my descendants. Many interesting stories were told in the serene setting of the front porch deep in the country, with only the interruptions of whippoorwills, hoot owls, screech owls, and such making pleasant noises in the distant woods. ... I hope that this book will inspire future generations in some way to understand the important things in life. It's been said that the best things are free, and I learned that one only has to make necessary efforts to obtain a peaceful, happy, and fulfilling life.

Book The Complete Seymour

Download or read book The Complete Seymour written by Peter J. Seymour and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter J. Seymour was a Salish storyteller. He carried forward earlier tales of elders along with his own experiences as fewer and fewer native speakers were sharing the Colville-Okanagan language and oral literature. To thwart the demise of this language, over the course of a decade he passed along Salish stories not only to his family but also to linguist Anthony Mattina. The Complete Seymour: Colville Storyteller includes Seymour’s tales collected in the late 1960s and early 1970s, before his death. It documents Seymour’s rich storytelling and includes detailed morphological analyses and translations of this endangered language. This collection is an important addition to the canon of Native American narratives and literature and an essential volume for anyone studying Salish languages and linguistics.

Book The Countess of Erroll

Download or read book The Countess of Erroll written by Ed. D Edwards and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My journey encapsulates a three year mystery that began in Edinburgh, Scotland in October 2006 in which I was led by a variety of mysterious historical symbols to learn about the life and challenges of Lady Mary Hay in Cruden Bay, Scotland, who was the 14th Countess of Errol during the years of 1711-1758. Mary Hay was the Senior Great Officer, Royal Office of Scotland and Chief of the King's Household in Scotland. She succeeded to the title in 1717 when she became Lady Hay and Baroness of Stain, 23rd Chief of the Hays (since 1171) and Mac Garaidh Mhar (a Celtic title). In 1727 she nominated John Duke of Roxburgh, to act as Her Deputy and walk in the procession for the coronation of George II. In 1745 she raised an army of Buchan men who stood for "Bonnie Prince Charlie"-Prince Charles Edward Stuart. She was close to sixty years of age at the time. At this time, Mary was a practicing Episcopalian and as this faith was persecuted by the Hanoverians she fitted out a grain store as a place of worship. This was known in Cruden Bay as `Countess Mary's Girnal'. It was burnt to the ground in 1746 by English Dragoons. She succeeded her brother, Charles Hay, and was succeeded by grandnephew Lord James Boyd Kilmarnock, the grandson of her late sister Margaret.

Book The Redemption of Black Elk

Download or read book The Redemption of Black Elk written by Linda L. Stampoulos and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a young child of the Oglala Lakota Sioux, Black Elk had been given a mighty vision which would lead him on a personal journey that lasted his entire life. Although Black Elk's vision was a prophetic message telling the terrible future of his tribe, it also held positive aspects that must be reclaimed. It is through this reclamation that the guiding beacons given to him reveal an ancient pathway woven into the images of the West. By exploring Black Elk's eyewitness account of the crucial events of that time, the author discovered a series of metaphorical footprints that show us the way toward inner strength and a balanced life...125 years later. To help with an interpretation of Black Elk's account, the author invoked the insight of Joseph Campbell, one of the world's foremost authorities on societal ideologies. Through his understanding of symbol and metaphor Campbell was able to examine the metaphorical footprints and provide us with a twenty-first century "spin" that a simple man generations before could only imagine. This book offers a new look at Black Elk's footprints and together with the insight of Joseph Campbell, presents an inward path to the positive forces within each of us, waiting for discovery. Book A Celebration of Work

  • Author : Norman Best
  • Publisher : U of Nebraska Press
  • Release : 1996-03-01
  • ISBN : 9780803261273
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book A Celebration of Work written by Norman Best and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Nothing is better for a person than to have an opportunity to do meaningful work," says Norman Best in this memoir detailing his forty-eight years as a blue-collar worker. During those years, he built and maintained highways and bridges in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Montana, and served stints as a machinist in the San Francisco shipyards and as business agent for Local 86 of the International Association of Machinists. In A Celebration of Work he shows how the construction of rural roads, railroad bridges, and modern superhighways depended on the expertise of skilled workers who cared deeply about quality. Yet the work of private contractors, interested solely in profit, was often careless and dangerous. Best's concern for the worker led him to the Communist Party in the 1930s, but, disillusioned with the party's leadership, he left it in 1946. His philosophy of economic democracy, rooted in Jeffersonian democracy, Marxian socialism, and the Golden Rule, renders his voice unique. Whether Best is describing organizing a union, busting the highway construction contract system, or refusing to cooperate with the FBI, his memoir honors the art of laboring with pride, self-confidence, and dignity.
