When they return to the States, they face third-culture questions of home and identity. They also deal with sexual situations and abuse, while settling into an evangelical bubble with their parents who pastor a fast-growing church. Everything collapses when their father runs off with an eighteen-year-old girl, leaving behind his family and church. At some point every parent realizes time is moving swiftly, and they ask themselves, How am I investing in my child? Through personal stories and biblical examples, 936 Pennies will help you discover how to capture time and use it to its fullest potential, replacing guilt and regrets with freedom. Meanwhile, your kids will see how simple choices, like putting the cell phone down and going on a family hike, will make all the difference. Together you will stretch time and make it richer. Book excerpt: Author John Barber brings adventure to every bookshelf as he releases through Xlibris the first installment of the Mole Trilogy. Readers are taken to the most dangerous zones of Vietnam as they follow one man?s exploits in First Mole. Captain John Baker, aka the Mole, has put himself in danger. After deploying himself to operate alone as a forward observer, he has been the target of all the local Vietcong units. The attention to detail of all his movements is very critical to his continued existence. A young man in his twenties, Baker has with him a good record of commendable achievements while in the military. He has exterminated a good number of Vietcong units with his artillery and kept almost all of his allied units from running into ambushes during the last six months. He got his nickname not by the many impressive feats he has but by his habit of digging a six-foot-long foxhole shelter to sleep in every night, and of course, his cunning and alertness even in the dark. Now, all by himself in his chosen special mission, Capt. Baker believes what he is risking his life for will atone his shame and guilt from a ?friendly fire? incident that resulted in the deaths of two of his soldiers. Amid threats, traps, and espionage, he takes on the challenge only to discover that what appears to be a highly complicated task is just in fact the beginning of a more tumultuous ride. Propelled with humor, action, and romance, First Mole will leave readers entertained from the first to the very last page. • Author : Joseph M. Thompson
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2024-03-22
  • ISBN : 1469678373
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book Cold War Country written by Joseph M. Thompson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-03-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Country music maintains a special, decades-long relationship to American military life, but these ties didn't just happen. This readable history reveals how country music's Nashville-based business leaders on Music Row created partnerships with the Pentagon to sell their audiences on military service while selling the music to servicemembers. Beginning in the 1950s, the military flooded armed forces airwaves with the music, hosted tour dates at bases around the world, and drew on artists from Johnny Cash to Lee Greenwood to support recruitment programs. Over the last half of the twentieth century, the close connections between the Defense Department and Music Row gave an economic boost to the white-dominated sounds of country while marginalizing Black artists and fueling divisions over the meaning of patriotism. This story is filled with familiar stars like Roy Acuff, Elvis Presley, and George Strait, as well as lesser-known figures: industry executives who worked the halls of Congress, country artists who dissented from the stereotypically patriotic trappings of the genre, and more. Joseph M. Thompson argues convincingly that the relationship between Music Row and the Pentagon helped shape not only the evolution of popular music but also race relations, partisanship, and images of the United States abroad.
