His best friend, Rick, who regularly drives by the accident scene, cannot help but stare at the makeshift memorial that was erected on the side of the road. He desperately misses Bob and wishes for just one more conversation with his funny, humble, and loyal buddy. While driving by the site one day, Rick is overcome with an uncontrollable urge to stop. After he gets out of his truck, Rick receives the surprise of his life when Bob appears before him. Shocked that he is talking to a spirit, Rick can hardly contain his excitement as he invites Bob in his pickup and heads back to one of their favorite haunts to catch up. After the two pair up, Rick, who is a newly licensed private investigator, begins to rely on Bob for insight. Soon, Bob is helping Rick solve cases. But the tables turn when Bob allows Rick to see other spirits, instigating a journey into the past where Rick connects with his memories and faces his own mortality. Bobbys Song is the poignant tale of two friends determined to not let death separate them as they slowly learn that true friendship has the power to cross every dimension.

Book I Ain t Studdin Ya

Download or read book I Ain t Studdin Ya written by Bobby Rush and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience music history with this memoir by one of the last of the genuine old school Blues and R&B legends, the Grammy-winning dynamic showman Bobby Rush. This memoir charts the extraordinary rise to fame of living blues legend, Bobby Rush. Born Emmett Ellis, Jr. in Homer, Louisiana, he adopted the stage name Bobby Rush out of respect for his father, a pastor. As a teenager, Rush acquired his first real guitar and started playing in juke joints in Little Rock, Arkansas, donning a fake mustache to trick club owners into thinking he was old enough to gain entry. He led his first band in Arkansas between Little Rock and Pine Bluff in the 1950s. It was there he first had Elmore James play in his band. Rush later relocated to Chicago to pursue his musical career and started to work with Earl Hooker, Luther Allison, and Freddie King, and sat in with many of his musical heroes, such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed and Little Walter. Rush eventually began leading his own band in the 1960s, crafting his own distinct style of funky blues, and recording a succession of singles for various labels. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Rush finally scored a hit with "Chicken Heads." More recordings followed, including an album which went on to be listed in the Top 10 blues albums of the 1970s by Rolling Stone and a handful of regional jukebox favorites including "Sue" and "I Ain't Studdin' Ya." And Rush's career shows no signs of slowing down now. The man once beloved for performing in local jukejoints is now headlining major music/blues festivals, clubs, and theaters across the U.S. and as far as Japan and Australia. At age eighty-six, he is still on the road for over 200 days a year. His lifelong hectic tour schedule has earned him the affectionate title "King of the Chitlin' Circuit," from Rolling Stone. In 2007, he earned the distinction of being the first blues artist to play at the Great Wall of China. His renowned stage act features his famed shake dancers, who personify his funky blues and his ribald sense of humor. He was featured in Martin Scorcese's The Blues docuseries on PBS, a documentary film called Take Me to the River, performed with Dan Aykroyd on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and most recently had a cameo in the Golden Globe nominated Netflix film, Dolemite Is My Name, starring Eddie Murphy. He was recently given the highest Blues Music Award honor of B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. His songs have also been featured in TV shows and films including HBO's Ballers and major motion pictures like Black Snake Moan, starring Samuel L. Jackson. Considered by many to be the greatest bluesman currently performing, this book will give readers unparalleled access into the man, the myth, the legend: Bobby Rush.

Book Your Personal Soldier

Download or read book Your Personal Soldier written by Theresa Nolan Kriner and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our mission was to get dropped off and walk about 4 clicks around and up and down and sideways (you get the picture) to our rally point. We were setting in an ambush. See, we go out and give the locals rice, blankets, beans, backpacks, etc. The tallytards come like a lunchtime bully and beat up the elder and burn everything we give them.' -Sgt Jordan Kriner When a soldier goes to war, it becomes a mission not only for himself and his brothers in arms but for the mothers, fathers, families, and communities that he leaves at home. Jordan Kriner followed a different path to the military than most. At twenty-four years old, he determined that his destiny was in service to his country, just as it had been for both his parents. Theresa Kriner knew she could not change her son's mind. The military was going to take her son and make him into a soldier. Her job would be to keep him human. Through the letters and reflections of the Kriner family, Your Personal Soldier is the revealing story of a man at war and the family, friends, churches, and communities left behind. As Sergeant Kriner fights for freedom on the frontlines of Afghanistan, his family is left to try to continue living a 'normal' life in the most abnormal of circumstances. Sometimes gritty, sometimes heartfelt, Your Personal Soldier describes the true toll of war.

Book Out Came the Sun

Download or read book Out Came the Sun written by Mariel Hemingway and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A moving, compelling memoir about growing up and escaping the tragic legacy of mental illness, suicide, addiction, and depression in one of America’s most famous families: the Hemingways. She opens her eyes. The room is dark. She hears yelling, smashed plates, and wishes it was all a terrible dream. But it isn’t. This is what it was like growing up as a Hemingway. In this deeply moving, searingly honest new memoir, actress and mental health icon Mariel Hemingway shares in candid detail the story of her troubled childhood in a famous family haunted by depression, alcoholism, illness, and suicide. Born just a few months after her grandfather, Ernest Hemingway, shot himself, it was Mariel’s mission as a girl to escape the desperate cycles of severe mental health issues that had plagued generations of her family. Surrounded by a family tortured by alcoholism (both parents), depression (her sister Margaux), suicide (her grandfather and four other members of her family), schizophrenia (her sister Muffet), and cancer (mother), it was all the young Mariel could do to keep her head. In a compassionate voice she reveals her painful struggle to stay sane as the youngest child in her family, and how she coped with the chaos by becoming OCD and obsessive about her food, schedule, and organization. The twisted legacy of her family has never quite let go of Mariel, but now in this memoir she opens up about her claustrophobic marriage, her acting career, and turning to spiritual healers and charlatans for solace. Ultimately Mariel has written a story of triumph about learning to overcome her family’s demons and developing love and deep compassion for them. At last, in this memoir she can finally tell the true story of the tragedies and troubles of the Hemingway family, and she delivers a book that beckons comparisons to Mary Karr and Jeanette Walls.

Book excerpt: The journey continues. At the conclusion of The Kept Ones: The Beginning Years, our hearts were left hurting for the beloved members of DeBarge. Their hardscrabble life and fast-paced journey toward destiny continues as the members plunge deep into a world of fame and excess. Seeking to become Motown R & B recording artists, the quintet prepares to leave memories of their abusive childhood behind. The story is eloquently voiced by lone female member, eldest sibling as well as singer/songwriter/producer of “A Dream,” Bunny DeBarge. The Kept Ones: The Fame Years unselfishly leads the reader down memory lane with the ups and downs as well as the highs and lows of the entertainment industry. Bunny DeBarge unapologetically gives her audience the inside scoop into Motown’s mega machine, a true taste of the music industry in the late ’70s and ’80s and what our favorite group was really like when the spotlight finally dimmed. Through her eyes, the reader gets to rub shoulders with legendary rhythm and blues and soul and pop artists backstage and onstage at the infamous Motown 25. The highlight and low point of the quintet’s career came with their biggest hit to date, “Rhythm of the Night.” Using their signature vocals, DeBarge beautifully harmonized the famous words “forget about the worries on your mind.” Yet they had no idea the worries awaiting them once they exited the stage. The Kept Ones: The Fame Years details unforeseen twists and roadblocks along the road of success, which sends them spiraling into a hedonistic lifestyle. Even through hurt and the loss of fame, Bunny DeBarge keeps it 100 percent real by unmasking all pride and ego. With remarkable strength, which has helped her overcome many of life’s obstacles, she continues to bare the depths of her heart, mind, and soul to her treasured and beloved fan base.
