Book My First Years in the Fur Trade

Download or read book My First Years in the Fur Trade written by George Nelson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-01-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captivated by tales of adventure, fifteen-year-old George Nelson left his family in Quebec in 1802 and headed to the Northwest Territory to work for Sir Alexander Mackenzie's XY Company, one of the major fur trade companies of the time. Required to keep a daily log as a fur trade clerk, his growth from homesick lad to experienced fur trader forms the heart of this unique and fascinating journal. He recorded his feelings and thoughts, and was a vital witness to all that went on around him. Nelson's journals are particularly valuable for their candid observations on the customs and culture of the Ojibwa people and provide some of the most detailed descriptions available of Ojibwa spiritual practices. Long treasured by fur trade historians, the early journals of George Nelson are published here in their entirety for the first time. Careful editing and annotation by Laura Peers and Theresa Schenck explain references to people and Ojibwa culture and provide context on the North American fur trade.

Book Canadian Sociologists in the First Person

Download or read book Canadian Sociologists in the First Person written by Stephen Harold Riggins and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social scientists' autobiographies can yield insight into personal commitments to research agendas and the very project of social science itself. But despite the long history of life writing, sociologists have tended to view the practice with skepticism. Canadian Sociologists in the First Person is the first book to survey the Canadian sociological imagination through personal recollections. Exploring the lives and experiences of twenty contributors from across the country, this book connects the unique and shared features of their careers to broad social dynamics while providing a guide to their own research and administrative contributions to their universities, their profession, and their broader society and communities. The contributors teach in different types of institutions, are prominent in the discipline and in their specializations, and represent significant and diverse intellectual currents, political perspectives, and life and career experiences. Aiming to start a broad conversation about what social science and the academic profession look like in Canada from an insider's perspective, Canadian Sociologists in the First Person offers invaluable lessons for younger scholars as they envision a diverse sociological imagination for the twenty-first century.

Book The Church I Couldn T Find

Download or read book The Church I Couldn T Find written by Charles Alexander and published by WestBowPress. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a year of searching, Charles and Verna could not find a church primarily operating on basic first-century principles. Most churches are not traditional enough! After thirty-five years as a pastor, my denomination had steered me in an ineffective and unbiblical direction. We had become chaplains to the culture, rather prophets within it. Few churches seem to have a process and possibly the knowledge in how to make effective disciples. Development of five apostolic principles is encouraged. They really work! The first-century church was not perfect, but remarkably diverse in maintaining apostolic accountability and encouragement. How may churches develop autonomy, unity and cooperation in close geographical areas? First-century worship is difficult to find. A service is produced here that, hopefully, includes all essential principles. Dependent on the process of the group event, the group-based church proves to be the best way to achieve apostolic goals and to provide an easy way to minister in unity with other churches. Many personal experiences illustrate the point. Practical and effective development, in the authors experience, has resulted in the building of three new churches and a wide ministry of teaching.

Book Crossing Troubled Waters

Download or read book Crossing Troubled Waters written by Elayne Grant Archer and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It has taken three years since my husband was killed in active service for me to get back to normal—or as normal as one can expect to be when the entire pattern of one’s life has been changed, and new threads have to be woven into a different design." These are the brave, wise words of Phyllis Grant Archer, a war widow, Canadian immigrant, and feminist before her time. Born in London in 1911, Phyllis led an exciting life, overcoming the challenges of a tumultuous childhood, discrimination as a working woman in the 1930s, the birth of her son during the Blitz, and the death of her husband in the war, just after the birth of her daughter. Seeking to start anew, Phyllis took her children to Toronto in 1944. Once there, however, she often faced hostility as a single, working mother and immigrant. She struggled to find safe and affordable housing and childcare and to balance her roles as breadwinner and caregiver. But this is not a misery memoir. Ultimately, the memoirist and her small family survive and thrive through a combination of “just getting on with it,” as well as wit, humour, and the solace of literature. The memoirist’s daughter, Elayne Archer, has edited and annotated Crossing Troubled Waters. Elayne’s “afterthoughts” at the end of each chapter put the memoir into perspective, observing not only Phyllis’ personal growth but also the shifting political and social landscape in terms of women’s roles and parenting standards. The result is an unforgettable story about resilience and forging ahead in the face of hardship.

Book Syrian Women Refugees

Download or read book Syrian Women Refugees written by Ozlem Ezer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on original interviews conducted across three continents, this book relates the experiences of nine Syrian women refugees and their perspectives on a range of subjects. Each narrative reveals a displaced woman's concept of the self in relation to memory, history, trauma and reconciliation within familial, international and cultural contexts. Their life stories contribute to building bonds and promoting trust between locals and "strangers" who are often defined only by their status as refugees. The book raises critical questions about stereotypes and racism while reminding readers of the shared joys and concerns of womanhood across cultures.
