Download or read book Tom Seaver written by Bill Madden and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative, “must-read” (Keith Hernandez) biography of Hall of Fame pitching legend Tom Seaver, still the greatest player ever to wear a Mets jersey, by a journalist who knew him well. He was called Tom Terrific for a reason. Tom Seaver is “among the greatest pitchers of all time” (Bob Costas). He is one of only two pitchers with 300 wins, 3,000 strikeouts, and an ERA under 3.00. He was a three-time Cy Young award winner, twelve-time All Star, and was elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame with the highest percentage ever at the time. Popular among players and fans, Seaver was fiercely competitive but always put team success ahead of personal glory. Born in Fresno, California, Seaver signed with the New York Mets in 1967, leading them to their stunning 1969 World Series victory. After a legendarily lopsided trade, he joined the Cincinnati Reds, then later played for the White Sox and the Red Sox before ending his career following the 1986 season. After his playing days, Seaver retired back to California to establish a successful vineyard. The in 2013, a recurrence of Lyme disease severely affected his memory, which Madden was the first to report. In 2019, Seaver’s family announced that he had been diagnosed with dementia and was withdrawing from public life. Tom Seaver died on August 31, 2021. Madden began following Seaver’s career in the 1980s. Seaver came to trust Madden so completely that, eager to return to New York from Chicago, he asked Madden to explore a possible trade to the Yankees which never materialized. Drawing in part on their long relationship, Madden “has crafted a biography as terrific as the subject” (Jane Leavy, New York Times bestselling author of Sandy Koufax: A Lefty’s Legacy).

Download or read book I Lost My Leg Not My Life written by Michael Merrigan and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it. --Charles Swindoll It was after midnight on an unlit desert road when Michael was hit by a car. Traveling fifty miles an hour, Michael's left leg was trapped in the car's wheel well, severing the main artery in his leg. As he was starting to bleed out, the driver made a call--a call that truly saved his life! Within minutes, paramedics arrived and were able to contain the bleeding. Michael was then rushed to Desert Regional Medical Hospital, where a staff of talented doctors were able to save his life. Unfortunately, to do so, they had to amputate his leg! Michael is here today to tell a story, a story about his journey and the discoveries he has made along the way. Self-reflection, perseverance, and a unique way of looking at life and its lessons permeate every page of this book. Overcoming the personal tragedies that occurred earlier in his life helped prepare him for the most significant challenge he would need to overcome. While others might not bounce back quickly after such a life-changing ordeal, with the help of family, friends, and a renewed belief in God, Michael persevered. His recovery is a testament to a commitment to live life as fully as he did before the accident--and to never give up. Walking with the assistance of a new prosthetic leg was a big step. Being able to someday run again along the sandy shores of Southern California will be another milestone. Michael's positive outlook is contagious. As he shares his journey from childhood through his ongoing recovery, you will be inspired by touching moments, funny anecdotes, and a self-effacing assessment of life. Michael's mantra reflects his attitude. It reinforces the fact that we are all lucky, as things can (always) be worse.

Download or read book Agency and Institutions in Sport written by Mathew Dowling and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a unique insight into the role of individuals and organisations in shaping institutional arrangements within the context of sport. Institutional approaches can be used to examine the complex relationships between sport organisations and their broader environment and can help explain some of the most fundamental questions about the nature of how sport is organised including why are many sport organisations so similar? Why do they adopt practices that are seemingly irrational? And how can we explain how change occurs within sport organisations? In drawing upon contemporary scholarship and empirical evidence collected by internationally recognized experts within sport, this book provides a contemporary collection of studies that advances the understanding of agency in institutions through sport. In doing so, the chapters in this book bridge the theoretical divide between mainstream management and sport management to help facilitate a joint venture for future research. This book will be essential reading for advanced undergraduate or postgraduate students on sport or sport-related courses and researchers interested in institutional analysis and its potential application to sport. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of European Sport Management Quarterly.

About their story So Far, So Good, she writes: "When Pete found his brain tumor, we both realized that 'this changed everything.' Both of us quit working. Pete's prognosis was grim. He had a grade IV Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumor with an estimated life expectancy of six to eleven months." So began the journey captured in this memoir. "Pete had two brain surgeries, participated in a clinical trial, had six weeks of radiation, over thirty MRIs, had blood clots and nearly died once of pneumonia. Pete's attitude toward his illness was amazing. He was a fighter, always focused on living, not dying." When people asked how he was doing, he would say, So Far, So Good. "Pete lived twenty-five months and we had an amazing adventure together. Details of Pete's treatment and our trips are captured real time in the carepage entries we made to allow those following us to stay current over these twenty-five months. The carepage entries are included in the book. Our site had over 26,000 hits over those twenty-five months. Pete's death on Jan 26, 2008, was described on our carepage. The other dimension to this memoir is the spiritual journey Pete and I experienced as Pete faced his own death." So Far, So Good is a love story about two people coping with an awful disease together, "deepening our love for each other along the way." Download or read book Buzzie and the Bull written by Ken LaZebnik and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buzzie and the Bull chronicles a baseball year in the lives of two lifelong friends who couldn’t be more different: Buzzie Bavasi, the legendary general manager of the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, and Al “the Bull” Ferrara, bon vivant, fountain of joy, and bench player. Their 1965 baseball journey encompassed a thrilling pennant race settled on the final day of the season, a city engulfed in flames, a perfect game, and a GM who extolled his friend the Bull as a hero in May and then banished him from the team to the depths of public purgatory in July. The partnership of these two characters—the general manager who valued fearlessness above all else and the crazy player who loved living on the edge—became the embodiment of champions who never choked in the clutch. Over seventeen years, Bavasi’s teams won eight pennants and four World Series titles. His approach deserves recognition it has never received, and his friendship with Ferrara illustrates the ground on which he staked his baseball career. The summer of 1965 proved Bavasi’s thesis that champions are built on players with one core characteristic: nerves of steel.
