Book excerpt: “Follow the adventures of a news-photographer-turned-private-eye as he seeks truth, justice, and an affair with his ex-wife” (The New York Times) in this hilarious caper from bestselling author Carl Hiaasen. R.J. Decker, star tenant of the local trailer park and neophyte private eye is fishing for a killer. Thanks to a sportsman’s scam that’s anything but sportsmanlike, there’s a body floating in Coon Bog, Florida—and a lot that’s rotten in the murky waters of big-stakes, large-mouth bass tournaments. Here Decker will team up with a half-blind, half-mad hermit with an appetite for road kill; dare to kiss his ex-wife while she’s in bed with her new husband; and face deadly TV evangelists, dangerously seductive women, and a pistol-toting redneck with a pit bull on his arm. And here his own life becomes part of the stakes. For while the “double whammy” is the lure, first prize is for the most ingenious murder.

Book Tide Cracks and Sastrugi

Download or read book Tide Cracks and Sastrugi written by Graeme Connell and published by Polished Publishing Group. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a person pack a bag and head off into the vast white, frozen, inhospitable desert of Antarctica? Is it adventure, tales of heroism and sacrifice, science or simply because it is there? In a mix of nerve-tingling drama, history, anecdote, and the physical and emotional unknown, Graeme Connell talks about his odyssey on the continent at the bottom of the world. This is a glimpse of a small country's Antarctic activity at the tail end of the first decade of modern exploration. It is also a snapshot of a young, disillusioned small town newspaper journalist who seeks change to embrace all that life has to offer for himself, his wife and family.--Cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever been confused when people talk about sustainable living? Do you want to know about the real Holy Land, the one that doesnt get shown on the news? Ever wondered what living in a communal village would really be like? In September of 2011, the author went to Israel to answer all these questions for himself. Eco 7: Zionists, Green Freaks, and Hasidic Hippies is the insightful and inspiring memoir of his five months on the Hava-ve-Adam Ecological farm in central Israel. Along the way, he does indeed meet Zionists, green freaks, and Hasidic hippies, and he learns from sometimes painful experience the fine art of vagabonding in a foreign country. Over time, he comes to understand the true meaning of not just permaculture but also family and community. Far from being a war-torn military state, this book shows an Israel that is alive and ever-changing, as well as a study in contrasts, through the eyes of one who was there.

Book One Night on the Island

Download or read book One Night on the Island written by Josie Silver and published by Dell. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of One Day in December . . . When a double-booking at a remote one-room cabin accidentally throws two solace seekers together, it feels like a cruel twist of fate. But what if it’s fate of a different kind? “A perfectly executed and quintessential romantic comedy.”—Christina Lauren, author of The Unhoneymooners Spending her thirtieth birthday alone is not what dating columnist Cleo Wilder wanted, but she plans a solo retreat―at the insistence of her boss―in the name of re-energizing herself and adding a new perspective to her column. The remote Irish island she’s booked is a far cry from London, but at least it’s a chance to hunker down in a luxury cabin and indulge in some self-care while she figures out the next steps in her love life and her career. Mack Sullivan is also looking forward to some time to himself. With his life in Boston deteriorating in ways he can’t bring himself to acknowledge, his soul-searching has brought him to the same Irish island to explore his roots and find some clarity. Unfortunately, a mix-up with the bookings means both have reserved the same one-room hideaway on exactly the same dates. Instantly at odds, Cleo and Mack don’t know how they’re going to manage until the next weekly ferry arrives. But as the days go by, they no longer seem to mind each other’s company quite as much as they thought they would. Written with Josie Silver’s signature charm, One Night on the Island explores the meaning of home, the joys of escape, and how the things we think we want are never the things we really need.

Book The Human Face of D Day

    Book Details:
  • Author : Keith M. Nightingale
  • Publisher : Casemate
  • Release : 2023-04-20
  • ISBN : 1636241034
  • Pages : 357 pages

Download or read book The Human Face of D Day written by Keith M. Nightingale and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "War and conflict are human creations and Nightingale’s book draws on human interaction and experience underpinned by historical context. He describes the strategy and operations only to the depth necessary to frame the significance of the human experiences placed in the events." — Military Review Ever since Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, the men who survived have sought to return, to honor their dead, and to teach others of what they went through to liberate Europe. Soldier Keith Nightingale has conducted terrain walks in Normandy for over forty years with veterans, active-duty military, and local French civilians. Over the decades Nightingale conducted dozens of formal interviews and informal conversations with many of the principals of the day, including Generals Bradley, Collins, Gavin, Ridgway and Hill. Added to this rare, new primary material from the top brass are numerous conversations with lower-ranking vets who did the heavy lifting, many of which took place as they actually walked the battlefield with Nightingale—Major Howard of Pegasus Bridge; LTC Otway of Merville Battery; Captain Piper of La Fière Bridge; LTC Vandervoort, CO of the 2-505/82d; Cpt Raeen of the 5th Rangers; Lt Dick Winters of Brécourt Manor; PFC Marcucci of Omaha Beach; and SSG Lem Lomell of Pointe Du Hoc. This unique approach to D-Day combines the author’s discussions with veteran and civilian participants in D-Day, his personal reflections on Operation Overlord, and the insights that occur—often at the very site of a battle. Interspersed with veterans’ remarks, Nightingale’s personal essays are inspired by specific discussions or multiple interviews. Taken together, the succinct, human observations of these participants illuminate the hard facts to create a unique work of long-lasting interest that will attract specialists, military history buffs, armchair generals, and general readers alike.

Download or read book Karmath Jeevan written by Krishan Aneja and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first most pertinent question I faced before I could start narrating my story was, what title would sum up the essence of my journey? I thought the title should be apt and inspiring enough for me to stay focused on basic nuances that formed my core belief. A lot of churning spread over few weeks helped and I zeroed in on Karmath Jeevan. To me it means a world and is the most apt description of my life. Simply put, Karmath Jeevan means an action-oriented life; a life dedicated to sincere hard work as a dharma (duty) without undue anxiety for the results. I consider I lived in practice by this principle though not as an articulated thought. The house-hold environment during my childhood days and formative years led me to follow the elders especially my mother, my brother-in-law and two sisters whose daily routines, though apparently ordinary and simple, greatly impacted my mind and my thought process. The visits to temples along with them and listening to discourses of holy men/women influenced me. I learnt; one should focus on the task ahead, act sincerely with honesty of purpose and be satisfied. That was said to be a clear path to leading a meaningful, satisfying and fulfilling life.

Book G night Grandma G night John Boy

Download or read book G night Grandma G night John Boy written by Rus Slater and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are various names for it; three generation living, extended family, sad, lucky.....(depending on your opinions) but it boils down to this, after several generations of young Britons dreaming of growing up, flying the nest and getting a place of their own, there is now an increasing number of people aged between thirty and fifty who find themselves sharing a home with their Mum and/or Dad AND their own children. We aren't talking about the youngsters who simply can't afford to leave home, in spite of being educated and working, simply because the lowest rung on the property ladder is too high and the banks just don’t lend mortgages any more. Why aren’t we generally talking about them? Because living in the same house as Mum and Dad still inhibits the breeding cycle of humans to a degree where most people have to leave home to reproduce! We are talking about families who actually make a decision to change their lifestyle from one where each house owning generation has its own home to one where they cohabit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a personal story based on my experiences in 1971, the founding year of Tactics Combat Development & Training Squadron (TCDTS). The Squadron was upgraded to an Establishment, Tactics & Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) in Dec 1972. The primary source of information is my log book which for every pilot is a document of prime importance. It is filled every month from the Flight Authorisation book of the sqn and signed by the Flt Cdr and the Sqn Cdr. Ask any pilot and referring to his log book he will be able to tell you where he was and what he did on any date of his flying career. Essentially this is a first-hand account of the story of TCDTS air operations in the Indo-Pak war 1971, supported by as many sources as I could find. By no means have I attempted to tell the history of the Indo-Pak War 1971 as there is any amount of literature on the subject. Ours was a small but important part of the overall effort of the Indian Air Force which I hope makes an intriguing and exciting narrative. Teshter Master Bangalore
