Book My Father s Smokehouse

Download or read book My Father s Smokehouse written by Vivian Faith Prescott and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filled with stories of family, food, and culture, and interwoven with personal recipes and photographs taken by the author, My Father's Smokehouse folds the reader into a beautiful island landscape. "Prescott emphasizes the importance of learning the traditional values of where one lives, gratitude for what the land and sea provide, and the responsibility to share with community." —Anchorage Daily News "[Prescott’s] book is filled with traditions, memories and stories surrounding Southeast Alaska life, including a family’s perseverance, the wisdom of Sámi and Tlingit cultures, and respect for elders and their knowledge of the culture. The smokehouse at the fish camp is named after her father." —Wrangell Sentinel The smokehouse at Mickey's Fishcamp holds more than fish. It is filled with traditions, memories, and stories of a thriving Southeast Alaskan life—of a family's perseverance, of the wisdom of Sámi and Tlingit cultures, and of respect for Elders and their knowledge of the natural world. Mickey's Fishcamp is named after three generations of Prescott fishermen who commercially fished the waters of the Inside Passage, and is located near one of the oldest Tlingit settlements in Wrangell, Alaska. Here, next to the rainforest and sea, author Vivian Faith Prescott has found her place in the world. She is a student and teacher of the natural environment—harvesting spruce tips, berries, sea lettuce, and goose tongue and processing salmon, halibut, and hooligan—who combines traditional practices with modern knowledge. Heartwarming and introspective, My Father's Smokehouse tells one woman's stories of Traditional Knowledge that is learned and passed on, from one generation to the next.

Book excerpt: This e-book was created to help English Language students gain confidence in breezing through English speaking exams. The topic cards are based on 11 common topics encountered in IGCSE English as a Second Language speaking exams. This mini-book may also be used as a guide for school or for those pursuing English Language courses worldwide. Author Preface (within e-book) Dear friend Thank you for buying ‘My Companion’ speaking guide for IGCSE exams. You’ve made a wise decision! Many students attempting speaking exams usually get tongue-tied and are in a state of delirium! Many have ‘butterflies in their tummies’! So this was written to help alleviate such ills. Remember the speaking cards are not to be considered as a written script! Use them as a companion guide and try to create a smooth flow of the language talking about your own picture stories from any album in your own minds… Generally speaking, a multiple reading of all the cards will ensure better practice of sentence structures and expressions that aim in building a natural flair for the language. Learn to blend your thought sequences into word components on your lips. You don’t have to impress the invigilator or examiner! A proper and engaging context is what is expected of students to portray during the ‘conversation’. There aren’t any right or wrong answers either! A little digression from the topic may be allowed but remember to put yourself back on track every time that happens. ‘Comprehension’ of the topic card at hand plays a key factor in conveying fair acceptable answers. The best part is seeing yourself breeze through the speaking exams. It’s all about using the charm of positive thinking! You CAN do this! And with that said…let me personally wish you, BEST OF LUCK and God bless… Have pleasant days ahead… Kind regards Ms. Kesh Genga English Language Instructor/ Writer

Book In My Father s Arms

Download or read book In My Father s Arms written by Walter A. de Milly and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1999-10-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: first paperback edition: To the outside world, Walter de Milly's father was a prominent businessman, a dignified Presbyterian, and a faithful husband; to Walter, he was an overwhelming, handsome monster. This paperback edition of In My Father's Arms: A Son's Story of Sexual Abuse adds a reflective preface by the author and a foreword by Richard B. Gartner, author of Beyond Betrayal: Taking Charge of Your Life after Boyhood Sexual Abuse. "A sensitive and compelling account of father-son incest. In spite of the suffering portrayed, the account also gives testimony to the strength of family bonds, and to the courage and resilience of the human spirit."—Fred S. Berlin, MD, Director of the National Institute for the Study, Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Trauma "This is the most detailed and utterly plausible account I've ever read of what it feels like to be an abused child, and it is told with cinematic presence and verisimilitude. The anger, the love, the evasiveness and jealousy and confusion, the need to dissociate oneself from one's own actions and reactions—all are presented in a harrowing narrative, which is as tragic as a Greek drama and as engrossing as a Victorian novel. The unexpected element in this book—which falls on it like manna—is its nourishing, exquisite lyricism."—Edmund White, author of A Boy's Own Story cloth: "Walter de Milly has written a sensitive and compelling account of father-son incest. In spite of the suffering portrayed, the account also gives testimony to the strength of family bonds, and to the courage and resilience of the human spirit."—Fred S. Berlin, M.D., Director of the National Institute for the Study, Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Trauma "This is the most detailed and utterly plausible account I've ever read of what it feels like to be an abused child, and it is told with cinematic presence and verisimilitude. The unexpected element in this book—which falls on it like manna—is its nourishing, exquisite lyricism."—Edmund White The TV-perfect family of Walter de Milly III was like many others in the American South of the 1950s—seemingly close-knit, solidly respectable, and active in the community. Tragically, Walter's deeply troubled father would launch his family on a perilous journey into darkness. To the outside world, this man is a prominent businessman, a dignified Presbyterian, and a faithful husband; to Walter, he is an overwhelming, handsome monster. Whenever the two are together, young Walter becomes a sexual plaything for his father; father and son outings are turned into soul-obliterating nightmares. Walter eventually becomes a successful businessman only to be stricken by another catastrophe: his father, at the age of seventy, is caught molesting a young boy. Walter is asked to confront his father. Walter convenes his family, and in a private conference with a psychiatrist, the father agrees to be surgically castrated. De Milly's portraits of his relationships with his father and mother, and the confrontation that leads to his father's bizarre and irreversible voluntary "cure," are certain to be remembered long after the reader has set aside this powerful contribution to the literature of incest survival. Walter de Milly is a writer living in Key West, Florida.

Book The Sound of SCH A Mental Breakdown A Life Journey

Download or read book The Sound of SCH A Mental Breakdown A Life Journey written by Danielle Lim and published by Ethos Books. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a life weave along through the same notes and yet come to play forth different sounds? The Sound of SCH (pronounced S-C-H) is the true story of a journey with mental illness, beautifully told by Danielle Lim from a time when she grew up witnessing her uncle's untold struggle with a crippling mental and social disease, and her mother's difficult role as caregiver. The story takes place between 1961 and 1994, backdropped by a fast-globalising Singapore where stigmatisation of persons afflicted with mental illness nevertheless remains deep-seated. Unflinchingly raw and honest in its portrayal of living with schizophrenia, The Sound of Sch is a moving account of human resiliency and sacrifice in the face of brokenness. Winner of the Singapore Literature Prize (Non-Fiction 2016)

Book Giving the Finger

Download or read book Giving the Finger written by Scott M. Campbell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part documentary, part reality-television, the story of the Deadliest Catch’s Alaskan crab fishermen risking their lives in the Bering Sea to make a buck and feed their families has captivated the world. Giving the Finger follows the life of the spirited young captain who has emerged as one of the most talked-about figures on the show, Scott Campbell Jr., who leads the crew of the Seabrooke. As this book--a prequel to Junior’s ascent to fame--shows, the trials of crabbing are not limited to living at sea and working the most dangerous job on the planet, but carry over to family and friends, and are usually stormier than the Bering. Junior began his life as a fisherman in the shadow of his father, Scott Campbell Sr., and has struggled consistently to gain his own reputation as a captain. Arguably, one of the best fishermen working the waters today, Campbell Jr. has certainly done that, but not without sacrifice, of all sorts. Campbell has divorced and re-married the same woman three times, endured handicapping injuries and lost crew members to the icy waters of the north. Giving the Finger gives a first person account of these losses and the everyday fight for life and love, and shows that by hard work and perseverance, even a kid from Walla Walla, Washington, can become a star.

And Langdon Cook is not just your typical grocery cart-toting dad. For him, gourmet delicacies abound, free for the taking if we just open our eyes. As a result, he finds himself free-diving in icy Puget Sound in hopes of spearing a snaggletooth lingcod, armed with nothing more than a "Hawaiian sling." He tempts fate by eating mushrooms that may or may not be poisonous. He strings up a fly rod to chase after sea-run trout. He even pulls on the gardening gloves to collect stinging nettles. In wry, detailed prose, he traces his journey from wrangler of pre-packaged calories to connoisseur of coveted wild edibles. Structured around the seasons of the year, each chapter focuses on a specific food type and concludes with a recipe featuring the author's hard-won bounty, a savory stop to each adventure-filled morsel.

Book excerpt: This story has a lot of twists and turns. It is a true story about myself and six siblings growing up in rural Alabama in the sixties and seventies. Life was so different then. I strived to show in words the things I have seen and the places I have been. I figured out my mom was a very strong and intelligent woman. She did a lot of things out of desperation. Our father was an alcoholic for a long time and was also schizophrenic. Our mom had a lot to deal with. All of us children got shifted around from place to place. There were a lot of times we had no parental supervision. We learned stuff on our own. Poverty, abuse, desolation. You learn to turn your head and look away. Some people turn out okay, and some don't. I ended up living in a lot of different places. I do want to say all we went through, there are other children who have been through worse. Even though today we all live in different states, we keep in touch and are still close.
