Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1974 and the General Council of the Soviet Party has just received word that Marshal Georgi Zhukov is on his deathbed. With the goal of retrieving and destroying a journal that chronicles Zhukov’s significant involvement in the historical events of World War II, secret police officers break into his home. However, the determination of a fallen hero should never be underestimated. Zhukov, a little known Russian general and bona fide war hero who lives by the truth and, as a result, has been forced to live out most of his life in the unfairness of obscurity, knows his life is coming to an end. In an effort to pass the truth on to posterity, he assigns his beloved daughter, Tatyanna, the dangerous mission of revealing the contents of his journal to the world. While battling censorship and attempts on her life, Tatyanna holds true to her promise and eventually, everyone learns that it was Zhukov who masterminded the ingenious strategies that resulted in the defeat of Hitler. While facing the threat of being discovered by Stalin and imprisoned or murdered by a firing squad, Zhukov is the first to liberate a concentration camp while on his way to Berlin to kill Hitler and drag his body through the streets of Moscow. In this compelling novel based on true events, only time will tell if Zhukov's daughter will succeed in her mission or whether the truthful facts about World War II will be lost to the world along with a secret that will forever change the view of this war.

Book Journals 1928 1939

Download or read book Journals 1928 1939 written by André Gide and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beginning with a single entry for the year 1889, when he was twenty, and continuing intermittently but indefatigably through his life, theJournals of Andr Gideconstitute an enlightening, moving, and endlessly fascinating chronicle of creative energy and conviction. Astutely and thoroughly annotated by Justin O'Brien in consultation with Gide himself, this translation is the definitive edition of Gide's complete journals. The complete journals, representing sixty years of a varied life, testify to a disciplined intelligence in a constantly maturing thought. These pages contain aesthetic appreciations, philosophic reflections, sustained literary criticism, notes for the composition of his works, details of his personal life and spiritual conflicts, accounts of his extensive travels, and comments on the political and social events of the day, from the Dreyfus case to the German occupation. Gide records his progress as a writer and a reader as well as his contacts and conversations with the bright lights of contemporary Europe, from Paul Valry, Paul Claudel, Lon Blum, and Auguste Rodin to Marcel Proust, Stephen Mallarm, Oscar Wilde, and Nadia Boulanger. Devoid of affectation, alternately overtaken by depression and animated by a sense of urgency and hunger for literature and beauty, Gide read voraciously, corresponded voluminously, and thought profoundly, always questioning and doubting in search of the unadulterated truth. ""The only drama that really interests me and that I should always be willing to depict anew,"" he wrote, ""is the debate of the individual with whatever keeps him from being authentic, with whatever is opposed to his integrity, to his integration. Most often the obstacle is within him. And all the rest is merely accidental."""

Book The British The Bandits and The Bordermen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rustamji’s two articles in The Indian Express proved to be the catalyst and formed the basis for the first Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in India in 1979 and was responsible for the phenomenon of judicial activism in India. Pakistani terrorists’ plans to hijack an Indian Airlines plane piloted by Rajiv Gandhi were scuttled thanks to Rustamji and other Bordermen. However, another plane was hijacked and taken to Lahore in January 1971. A few days after the crew and passengers were let off safely, the aircraft was set ablaze. A month later, Rajiv’s mother, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi said to Rustamji, “Do what you like, but don’t get caught.” He cashed the blank cheque and helped Bangladeshi freedom fighters. The end result: the creation of the independent state of Bangladesh in December 1971. On Prime Minister Nehru’s seventieth birthday in 1959, Rustamji gave him a unique ‘present’ - the news of the killing of the notorious nose-chopping bandit, Gabbar Singh in full view of hundreds of people. The very same Gabbar Singh who is today a household name after the film Sholay once carried a reward of Rs 50,000 and was known as Gabra. Rustamji averred that the British intelligence must have had information that Jinnah was critically ill with cancer and would not live long. The British Government was apprehensive that if Jinnah died, Pakistan would not come into being and its strategic interest in the subcontinent would suffer. Hence, in June 1947, the date for Independence was suddenly advanced to 15 August 1947 on a specious excuse. The change in the date led to the tragedy of Partition.
