Book My Brother Esau is a Hairy Man

Download or read book My Brother Esau is a Hairy Man written by Susan Niditch and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Jacob and Esau is told in the book of Genesis. With his mother's help, Jacob impersonates his hairy older twin by dressing in Esau's clothes and covering his own hands and the nape of his neck with the hairy hide of goats. Fooled by this ruse, their blind father, Isaac, is tricked into giving the younger son the blessing of the firstborn. This is only one of many biblical stories in which hair plays a pivotal role. In recent years, there has been an explosion of scholarly interest in the relationship between culture and the body. Hair plays an integral role in the way we represent and identify ourselves. The way we treat our hair has to do with aesthetics, social structure, religious identity, and a host of other aspects of culture. In societies modern and ancient, the hairdo is one key to a group's cultural code. In ancient Israel, hair signifies important features of identity with respect to gender, ethnicity, and holiness. Susan Niditch seeks a deeper understanding of Israelite culture as expressed, shaped, and reinforced in images of hair. Among her examples is the tradition's most famous long-haired hero, Samson. The hair that assures Samson's strength is a common folktale motif, but is also important to his sacred status as a Nazirite. Niditch examines the meaning of the Nazirite identity held by Samuel as well as Samson arguing that long hair is involved in a complex set of cultural assumptions about men, warrior status, and divine election. In addition to biblical texts, Niditch looks at pictorial and other material evidence. She concludes by examining the troubling texts in which men impose hair cutting or loosening upon women, revealing much about attitudes to women and their place in Israelite culture. Much has been written on the presentation of the body in various literatures, including the Bible, but the role of hair in ancient Israel has been neglected. This book charts a new path for studies on the body, religion, and culture.

Book excerpt: If God can love Jacob, then He can love anyone.Surprisingly, God associates Himself with Jacob more than any other person in the Bible. God calls Himself the God of Jacob on twenty-four occasions. And He calls Himself the God of Israel (the new God-given name of Jacob) over two hundred times.Jacob is not the biblical "hero" that we talk about. There are no children's songs about Jacob. No one sings "Dare to Be a Jacob." His story is more embarrassing than impressive. Yet God ties His name for all eternity to Jacob. Why? Because all of us are like Jacob in some regard. We are all "heelcatchers," struggling to make life work, wrestling with God, fighting to figure out who we are.Jacob's story is our own.In my own struggle with anxiety, panic attacks, perfectionism, past abuse, and the meaning of masculinity, I discovered the beauty and power of God's grace in Jacob's life. The God who loves Jacob loves us all...and is a refuge to all who cling to Him alone."Be still, and know that I am God;I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us;The God of Jacob is our refuge."-Psalm 46:10-1

Book Gender Play in the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book Gender Play in the Hebrew Bible written by Amy Kalmanofsky and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the Hebrew Bible often reflects and constructs a world that privileges men, many of its narratives play extensively with the gender norms of the society in which they were written. Drawing from feminist, masculinity and queer studies, Gender-Play in the Hebrew Bible uses close literary analysis to argue that the writers of the Bible intentionally challenge gender norms in order to reveal the dangers of destabilizing societal and theological hierarchies that privilege men and masculinity. This book presents a fascinating argument about the construction and import of gender in the biblical narratives, and will be of great interest to academics in the fields of religion, theology, and Biblical studies as well as gender studies.

Book Letters to My Friends from Christ

Download or read book Letters to My Friends from Christ written by Chi Charlie Chi and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even after 2000 years has passed since Jesus died on the Cross, there is still a good deal of debate regarding the authenticity of his teaching. Many scholars argue that much of the New Testament cannot be trusted and many people are not totally convinced with the current interpretation of the Old Testament; many people are torn and divided between atheism and belief. "My Opinions on the Bible by Jesus" introduces the new interpretation of the Old Testament and presents somewhat different pictures of Jesus' teaching and life. Whether this story is a mere fiction or a story based on real communion with the spirit of Jesus during the author's prayers can be only determined by each individual reader alone.

Book Causal Categories in Discourse and Cognition

Download or read book Causal Categories in Discourse and Cognition written by Ted Sanders and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All languages of the world provide their speakers with linguistic means to express causal relations in discourse. Causal connectives and causative auxiliaries are among the salient markers of causal construals. Cognitive scientists and linguists are interested in how much of this causal modeling is specific to a given culture and language, and how much is characteristic of general human cognition. Speakers of English, for example, can choose between because and since or between therefore and so. How different are these from the choices made by Dutch speakers, who speak a closely related language, but (unlike English speakers) have a dedicated marker for non-volitional causality (daardoor)? The central question in this volume is: What parameters of categorization shape the use of causal connectives and auxiliary verbs across languages? The book discusses how differences between even quite closely related languages (English, Dutch, Polish) can help us to elaborate the typology of levels and categories of causation represented in language. In addition, the volume demonstrates convergence of linguistic, corpus-linguistic and psycholinguistic methodologies in determining cognitive categories of causality. The basic notion of causality appears to be an ideal linguistic phenomenon to provide an overview of methods and, perhaps more importantly, invoke a discussion on the most adequate methodological approaches to study fundamental issues in language and cognition.
