Book My Bohemian Heritage

Download or read book My Bohemian Heritage written by Jetta Marie Vasak and published by Blue Dolphin Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Unless we document the lives of those who came before us, they will forever be forgotten." My Bohemian Heritage highlights two families who contributed greatly to the art and musical culture of Chicago in the early 1900s. Ms. Va ak first focuses on A. V. erny, her grandfather, who founded the first Bohemian Conservatory of Music in Chicago. His father, Jan, was a violinist who owned the Prague Orchestra. A.V. erny was an exceptional teacher and educated a whole generation of musical artists as soloists and as members of orchestras. Indeed, his own child, Milada, a child prodigy, began piano at the age of 3, becoming a virtuoso pianist and touring the United States at about age 9 and Europe at about age 10. Her younger sister, Zde ka (the author's mother), was heralded as "The Greatest Bohemian Violoncellist" in the world. The art-nouveau artist, Alfons Mucha, a personal friend of A.V. erny, often stayed at their home, and generously painted portraits and posters of A.V.'s two eldest daughters while teaching art at the Chicago Art Institute. A.V. erny was also a personal friend of Antonin Dvo ak, and founded the Dvo ak Quartet in the 1890s and later The Society for the Uplift of Chamber Music. Music and conversation filled their home. Through their doors and at their dining table appeared many of the most talented people of the era, bringing their cultural preferences for a variety of Bohemian delicacies, prepared by Grandma erny, all while playing chamber music, card games, and sharing many late-night stories. Among them were Rudolf Friml, pianist and composer, and Jan Kubelik, violinist, called "the Paganini of the 20th century." When Zde ka erny eloped with Otakar Va ak, who had immigrated from Prague at age 24, it had been "love at first sight." Thus, a small section of love letters adds color to otherwise black and white photos. In compiling these personal vignettes, Jetta Va ak passes on a small portion of her family story, while providing a window into the personal lives and times of these interesting people who contributed their gifts and talents to the rich and diverse culture of early Chicago."

  • Pages : 298 pages

Download or read book Czechs Germans Jews written by Kateřina Čapková and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of national identities, always a key issue in the modern history of Bohemian Jewry, was particularly complex because of the marginal differences that existed between the available choices. Considerable overlap was evident in the programs of the various national movements and it was possible to change one's national identity or even to opt for more than one such identity without necessarily experiencing any far-reaching consequences in everyday life. Based on many hitherto unknown archival sources from the Czech Republic, Israel and Austria, the author's research reveals the inner dynamic of each of the national movements and maps out the three most important constructions of national identity within Bohemian Jewry - the German-Jewish, the Czech-Jewish and the Zionist. This book provides a needed framework for understanding the rich history of German- and Czech-Jewish politics and culture in Bohemia and is a notable contribution to the historiography of Bohemian, Czechoslovak and central European Jewry.

Book The Bohemian Ethos

Download or read book The Bohemian Ethos written by Judith R. Halasz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iconoclastic ingenuity of bohemians, from Gerard de Nerval to Allen Ginsberg, continually captivates the popular imagination; the worlds of fashion, advertising, and even real estate all capitalize on the alternative appeal of bohemian style. Persistently overlooked, however, is bohemians' distinctive relationship to work. In this book, sociologist Judith R. Halasz examines the fascinating junctures between bohemian labor and life. Weaving together historiography, ethnography, and personal experiences of having been raised amidst downtown New York's bohemian communities, Halasz deciphers bohemians' unconventional behaviors and attitudes towards employment and the broader work world. From the nineteenth-century harbingers on Paris' Left Bank to the Beats, Underground, and more recent bohemian outcroppings on New York's Lower East Side, The Bohemian Ethos traces the embodiment of a politically charged yet increasingly precarious form of cultural resistance to hegemonic social and economic imperatives.

Book excerpt: This is the story of the search for my Czech or Bohemian heritage. My father was of Czech ancestry, but his death in 1950 when I was only seven created a situation where my mother's German American heritage was more intact. Beginning with a sketch of the history of the Kingdom of Bohemia, I trace the sojourn of my Czech Srnec (Sernett) ancestors from the Old Country to America where they eventually settled in Iowa. Most became farmers in Pocahontas County. My father Lee Louis Sernett (1892-1950) moved to Hampton, Iowa, in 1927 and two years later began operating a gas station. So it was that I grew up not on a farm but in a small town in farm country in the upper Midwest. During those decades I was exposed to the remnants of my mother's German-American heritage. This book is an attempt to discover and recover the Bohemian/Czech side of my family story.

Book A History of Bohemian Literature

Download or read book A History of Bohemian Literature written by Count Lützow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Bohemian Literature It has given me great pleasure that a new impression of my History of Bohemian Literature should have been required. I am, I think, justified in believing that the British public now takes a certain though still limited interest in the literature and language of my country. I am also perhaps not wrong in thinking that the origin of the struggles in the Austro-Hungarian empire - almost entirely attributable as it is to racial and linguistic discord - has become better understood in England. As I show in my book, the revival of Bohemian literature was largely responsible for the movement in favour of Bohemian autonomy; and the early leaders of the Bohemian movement in the nineteenth century were mostly literary men. I am justified, therefore, in claiming a certain political importance for this book. The new impression on the whole differs little from the former one, and in revising the book I noticed with pleasure how few printer's errors required correction - a somewhat astonishing fact if we consider how difficult the spelling of Slavic words is. I have added considerably to the last pages of the book, which deal mainly with writers who are now alive. This part of the subject had been previously somewhat neglected, as I originally intended to omit all mention of living authors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Bohemian Flats, Mary Relindes Ellis’s rich, imaginative gift carries us from the bourgeois world of fin de siècle Germany to a vibrant immigrant enclave in the heart of the Midwest and to the killing fields of World War I. Shell shock, as it was called, lands Raimund Kaufmann in a London hospital, a victim of the war but also of his own, and his brother’s, efforts to get out of Germany and build a new life in America. While his recovery eludes him, his memory returns us to Minneapolis, to the Flats, a milling community on the Mississippi River, where Raimund and his brother Albert have sought respite from the oppressive hand of their older brother, now the master of the family farm and brewery. In Minnesota the brothers confront different forms of prejudice, but they also find a chance to remake their lives according to their own principles and wishes—until the war makes their German roots inescapable. Following these lives, The Bohemian Flats conjures both the sweep of irresistible history and the intimate reality of a man, and a family, caught up in it. From a nineteenth-century German farm to the thriving, wildly diverse immigrant village below Minneapolis on the Mississippi to the European front in World War I, and returning to twentieth-century America—this is a story that takes a reader to the far reaches of human experience and the depths of the human heart.

Book excerpt: In his bestselling work of “comic sociology,” David Brooks coins a new word, Bobo, to describe today’s upper class—those who have wed the bourgeois world of capitalist enterprise to the hippie values of the bohemian counterculture. Their hybrid lifestyle is the atmosphere we breathe, and in this witty and serious look at the cultural consequences of the information age, Brooks has defined a new generation. Do you believe that spending $15,000 on a media center is vulgar, but that spending $15,000 on a slate shower stall is a sign that you are at one with the Zenlike rhythms of nature? Do you work for one of those visionary software companies where people come to work wearing hiking boots and glacier glasses, as if a wall of ice were about to come sliding through the parking lot? If so, you might be a Bobo.
