Download or read book General Custer Libbie Custer and Their Dogs written by Brian Patrick Duggan and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General George Armstrong Custer and his wife, Libbie Custer, were wholehearted dog lovers. At the time of his death at Little Bighorn, they owned a rollicking pack of 40 hunting dogs, including Scottish Deerhounds, Russian Wolfhounds, Greyhounds and Foxhounds. Told from a dog owner's perspective, this biography covers their first dogs during the Civil War and in Texas; hunting on the Kansas and Dakota frontiers; entertaining tourist buffalo hunters, including a Russian Archduke, English aristocrats and P. T. Barnum (all of whom presented the general with hounds); Custer's attack on the Washita village (when he was accused of strangling his own dogs); and the 7th Cavalry's march to Little Bighorn with an analysis of rumors about a Last Stand dog. The Custers' pack was re-homed after his death in the first national dog rescue effort. Well illustrated, the book includes an appendix giving depictions of the Custers' dogs in art, literature and film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. One of the tallest dog breeds, Scottish Deerhounds are also distinguished by their lean, wiry build. Their shaggy coat comes in a variety of colors, including gray, brindle, blue, fawn, and red. 2. They have a kind and mellow demeanor. They are recognized for their elegant and noble disposition. In general, they are kind to both kids and pets. 3. The Scottish deerhound has its roots in the Highlands of Scotland, where it was raised to hunt red deer. They've been around for centuries, and for the last few, the elite of society have relied on them for hunting. 4. The Great Dane is one of the largest canine breeds. Males normally range from 85 to 110 pounds (39-50 kg) and have a shoulder height of at least 30 inches (76 cm). Females are slightly smaller. 5. They require regular activity but are not hyperactive canines. In most cases, all that's required are a few long walks and a safe place to run outside. 6. The only way to keep their wiry coat from matting is to brush it often. The amount of hair they lose is average. 7. Health: Like other dog breeds, they might develop health problems like bloat and heart disease. Scottish Deerhounds are a beautiful and docile dog breed that is increasingly uncommon to find. If you have the time and room to devote to your pet, it will be a fantastic friend. Please elaborate if you were referring to a different term, and I'll do my best to answer your question

It’s Who’s There, Iowa’s first Druid-Con, a comic book themed convention organized by the teens of The Cult of Nicoderm (a group of four local teens who’ve taken the idea of extracurricular activities a bit too far). Ex-CIA agent turned suburban Girl Scout troop leader Merry Wrath doesn’t know how she was talked into making an appearance at the con as a giant beetle, but once she finds out that her favorite TV horror show host Deliria is going to be there, things are looking up! Book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Scottish Deerhounds

Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of Scottish Deerhounds written by Ross D. Clark and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (Scottish Deerhound) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.

Download or read book Dog s Best Friend written by Simon Garfield and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating, informative and highly entertaining expedition through the highways and byways of dogdom.” —John Bradshaw, New York Times bestselling author of Dog Sense A charming meditation on the relationship between humans and dogs, drawing upon history, science, art, and personal experience to illuminate a magical bond that has endured millennia—from the New York Times bestselling author of Just My Type. “Ludo is now an elderly gentleman, and we would do almost anything to ensure his continued happiness. We schedule our days around his needs—his mealtimes, his walks, the delivery of his life-saving medication (he has epilepsy, poor love). We spend a bizarrely large amount of our disposable income on him, and he never sends a card of thanks. When he’s not with us for a few days, the house feels extraordinarily empty. I feel so fortunate to know him.” Ludo is a dog—Simon Garfield’s beloved black Labrador retriever, one of millions of canines who have become integral parts of our lives. But how did the dog become top dog? How did these faithful animals come to assist us not only in hunting, but in bomb disposal and cancer detection—and ultimately become our closest companions? Dog’s Best Friend examines how this bond developed over the centuries, and how it has transformed countless lives, both human and canine. Garfield begins with the earliest visual representations—dogs depicted in ancient rock art—and ends at the laboratory that first sequenced the canine genome. Along the way, we meet the legendary Corgis of Buckingham Palace, the dogs of the Soviet space program, the world’s first labradoodle, and a border collie that can identify more than a thousand different plush toys. Garfield reveals the secrets of the world’s best dog trainers, takes us inside the wild world of dog breeding and dog shows, and unearths the deep psychological roots of the human-dog link. And Ludo pops his snout in from time to time as well. A celebration of this deep interspecies connection, delivered with Simon Garfield’s inimitable wit, Dog’s Best Friend offers delights and insights for anyone who has ever loved a dog.

Ex-CIA agent turned Girl Scout Leader, Merry Wrath is wondering if maybe it was a bad idea to have her girl scouts over for a Lord of the Rings marathon...because now they’ve signed the entire troop up for a LARP (Live Action Role Playing Game) event in Des Moines. The girls have decided they are the Skullcrushers from the country of Skullgraviastan—a land made up of mercenaries from other nations. They will be part of the Realm of Ulm for a weekend, fighting pirates, Mongols, Romans, and Vikings for supremacy! Okay, so maybe it’ll be fun, Merry thinks. No real dead bodies, her husband dressed in a kilt as a Highlander, and she gets to be General Dorcas the Dark One. But things don't stay innocent for long as Andy the Necromancer tells them Steve the Sorcerer was murdered a month ago and the police are convinced it was an accident... even though Andy isn't so sure. Against her better judgment, Merry and her homicide detective husband Rex take up the cold case. Between epic battles, eccentric suspects, and a cranky local detective who’s really close to retirement, the duo have their work cut out for them. Can Merry get to the truth... before this live action event turns deadly? What critics are saying about Leslie Langtry's books: "I laughed so hard I cried on multiple occasions!
