Book Comanche Marker Trees of Texas

Download or read book Comanche Marker Trees of Texas written by Steve Houser and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unprecedented effort to gather and share knowledge of the Native American practice of creating, designating, and making use of marker trees, an arborist, an anthropologist, and a Comanche tribal officer have merged their wisdom, research, and years of personal experience to create Comanche Marker Trees of Texas. A genuine marker tree is a rare find—only six of these natural and cultural treasures have been officially documented in Texas and recognized by the Comanche Nation. The latter third of the book highlights the characteristics of these six marker trees and gives an up-to-date history of each, displaying beautiful photographs of these long-standing, misshapen, controversial symbols that have withstood the tests of time and human activity. Thoroughly researched and richly illustrated with maps, drawings, and photographs of trees, this book offers a close look at the unique cultural significance of these living witnesses to our history and provides detailed guidelines on how to recognize, research, and report potential marker tree candidates.

Book The Bent Tree and the Sleeping Tiger

Download or read book The Bent Tree and the Sleeping Tiger written by Christopher Dutton and published by Christopher Dutton Broken Walls Publishing. This book was released on with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An old hermit monk journeys to the edge of a vast plain of long grass and resides under a great Bent Tree, where also rests a sleeping tiger. While there, he is visited by various characters who seek some solution to their life problems. The old man uses tales, debate and taoist philosophy to help them weave their way back into a happier tapestry of life. These tales mix humour with deep thought, which at first confounds, but always enlightens in the end. Far from the Road, the road more or less travelled, there is, under the Bent Tree, surrounded by long grass, an Old Man and a sleeping Tiger. That is to say that sometimes the man sleeps and sometimes the tiger sleeps. There are times too that both sleep, but because there is always peace, there are never times that both do not sleep. Strangely too, there is always one tiger for one man or one woman...never more , never less. What does this mean? We know the road is life, more or less travelled. We know the long grass is the vagueness of fates between living and wisdom. We "see" things in the distances of our destiny but how do we get there? Do we want to get there? The Bent Tree is easy. It is Death and it is Wisdom. For all knowledge comes with Death, the Great Portal...and then, that is the end of all Knowledge. Which is Wisdom also. The Death of all Knowledge. Under the Bent Tree, knowledge sleeps. We are left to explain a man and a tiger. The tiger sleeps and the man is awake. The man is Logic, Reason, Consciousness. The man sleeps and the tiger roams. Do not be alarmed, however. Though the tiger is indeed a man or woman's passions, without reason and logic, passion is only passion. It is Natural. It creates. It knows nothing of evil. Unless the man or woman awakens also. Then we have a soul to deal with.

Book Diseases of Trees and Shrubs

Download or read book Diseases of Trees and Shrubs written by Wayne A. Sinclair and published by Ithaca, N.Y. : Comstock Pub. Associates. This book was released on 1987 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases of Trees and Shrubs is a comprehensive pictorial survey of the diseases of, as well as the environmental damage to, forest and shade trees and woody ornamental plants in the United States and Canada. An authoritative reference, it is also a reliable and handy diagnostic tool that will simplify the identification of specific plant diseases by focusing on signs and symptoms that can be seen with the unaided eye or with a hand lens. This long-needed book gives readers complete, up-to-date information in an easily understood and convenient way. Each of the 247 color plates faces a page of explanatory text covering the biology and ecology (including host and geographic ranges) of the disease-causing agents (pathogens), a list of key references (there are more than 2,250), and, in some cases, black-and-white illustrations of pathogens. Selected information about biological and cultural control is provided. Scientific terms other than Latin names of pathogens are used only when necessary, and a glossary of terms and a comprehensive index are included. The color plates contain more than 1,700 illustrations of the diseases and injuries that some 350 biological agents and environmental factors cause to more than 250 species of plants. The book also serves as a guide to hundreds of other diseases related to those shown. The authors have used three levels of organization for this book. At the first level, diseases caused by biological agents are separated from those caused by environmental stimuli. At the second level, most diseases are grouped according to the plant part affected: leaves, twigs, limbs, roots, trunks, or the entire plant. At the third level, diseases are presented according to the taxonomic relationships among the pathogens. For this major project, the authors examined and photographed diseases and environmental damage in the field, visiting more than 50 states and Canadian provinces. Their book reflects the most important developments in fungal biology and taxonomy, plant bacteriology, virology, and environmentally induced stress in plants. It summarizes information about newly discovered diseases and provides up-to-date accounts of olds ones. Diseases of Trees and Shrubs can be profitable reading for anyone whose technical training does not extend beyond general biology, yet will also be informative to advanced students and plant pathologists. It will be welcomed by agricultural and horticultural advisers, plant inspectors, arborists, nursery professionals, landscapers, foresters, and urban planners. Wayne A. Sinclair is a Professor of Plant Pathology, Howard H. Lyon is Biological Photographer (retired), Department of Plant Pathology, and Warren T. Johnson is Professor of Entomology, all at Cornell University.

Ward When my brothers ask me to come home to Bent Creek, I agree without a second thought. After all, I just got fired and dumped, so I could use the ego boost that comes with the job they want me to do—convince Violet Barnes to sell me our family’s old ranch. Easy enough. But Violet is as tough as she is beautiful, and she’s not about to cave to my request. Until she finds herself married to me. It’s all business . . . until it’s not. Violet My job—and my family’s welfare—is on the line if I don’t agree to marry Ward Harker. My boss insists that ingratiating myself with the town is the only thing that will stop the eminent domain action against the old Harker property. And what better way to do that than to marry a man whose roots in Bent Creek stretch back generations? So I do it. Then I’ll divorce him as fast as possible once I’ve gotten what I want. But after getting to know him, seeing his protective instinct, accidentally adopting a dog together, and sharing one too many searing kisses, I’m not entirely sure I want this to end. Except that would mean I’d need to trust him. And I’ve never trusted anyone. Marybeth I’ve kept my distance from my brother Luke, especially now that he’s convinced the county to force the sale of my boyfriend’s family’s old ranch. It’s easier to focus my attention on my shop and on my boyfriend Gabe. But when another one of my brothers, Wilder, shows up in town, I’m drawn back into my own family mess. Wilder’s just broken off an engagement, and all I want to do is help him. But when I mistakenly spill Violet’s biggest secret, I realize that Luke was right: I have to choose a side. The family I was born into, or the family who’s accepted me as one of their own? If you love cowboys, Yellowstone-style family drama, small western towns filled with secrets, and sweet romance with a touch of suspense, this book is for you! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuro-imaginative gestalting (NIG) is a systemic method, developed for individual therapy by Eva Madelung, that can be used in counselling, self-help and group work. The novel integration of techniques from art therapy into the systemic process encourages therapeutic creativity and individual self-exploration. In a practical section, Barbara Innecken describes the therapeutic aspects of the method and uses case studies to elaborate her points. This material can be applied immediately by the experienced systemic therapist, but therapists-in-training and those of other theoretical orientations will find step-by-step instructions for practical use in individual therapy. Instructions for self-help complement the presentation. In the theoretical section of the book, points of contact and possibilities for mutual exchange and enrichment from constructivist oriented methods, such as NLP, De Shazer short-term therapy and Heidelberger family therapy, as well as the phenomenological-oriented family constellation therapy of Bert Hellinger, are described. In short, the book combines proven therapeutic practice with extensive theoretical background and contributes to the integration of family constellation therapy within other therapeutic methods.

Larkin Nick Harker left me without a word eleven years ago when his family fell apart. And now he's back. He says he's here to help his brother buy back the ranch their family lost when his dad went to prison. But I know what he really wants. He wants the one thing he can never have--a second chance with me. I won't let Nick disappoint me again. Especially now that I have a son to think of. But Nick keeps doing everything right, so when I start getting anonymous texts hinting that he's keeping secrets from me, I don't want to believe them. Even when the texts grow more threatening. Nick I swore I'd never come back to Bent Creek. This town and the Nobles took everything from me. But my brother needs help, and he's the one person I won't let down. Even though his mission to buy back the ranch is a terrible idea, I won't leave town until I make him see sense about Marybeth Noble and the danger he's in with her. The one thing I didn't count on was falling for Larkin again. One look at her, and I can't leave. I don't deserve to have her back, but I refuse to let anyone hurt her again. No matter what this town thinks of me and my family, I'll protect Larkin and her son. Marybeth Gabe and I are happy. All of the bad blood between our families is in the past--and that's where it should stay. But Nick doesn't trust me. Which is fine. After all, I don't know if I trust him not to break Larkin's heart all over again. My best friend was devastated when he left, and I'll be the one to pick up the pieces when it happens again. Nick might never forgive my family, but all I want is to move on with Gabe and run my shop in peace. Until Nick drops a secret that I never expected. Book The Healer s Way

    Book Details:
  • Author : Earnie Larsen
  • Publisher : Conari Press
  • Release : 2007-09-01
  • ISBN : 9781573243094
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book The Healer s Way written by Earnie Larsen and published by Conari Press. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leader in the recovery movement reveals how we can all heal. At the center of The Healer's Way is the "hoop"--a seven-step process of healing. First we need to make sure our core needs are met; without those we not only can't heal ourselves or others--we probably can't live. Then we need to get lost (step 2), get hurt (step 3), get stuck and hit the bottom of the circle (step 4). Only then can we get called (step 5), get up (step 6), and get going (step 7). Once we get going, we move through the cycle again and again, as life presents us with new opportunities for healing ourselves and others. The Healer's Way is the culmination of Earnie Larsen's thirty-plus years as a counselor. The seeds for the book were the questions of a young counselor: How do you keep going? What do you do when you can't make a difference? What makes a healer? The young man asked Larsen to be his mentor and some time later his stories, clues, questions, and answers came together in this book. Larsen writes, "In the beginning, and in the end, healing is about change. The pages here are about one thing and one thing only: the spiritual alchemy involved in the amazing-grace process of personal transformation."
