Book Lester Higata s 20th Century

Download or read book Lester Higata s 20th Century written by Barbara Hamby and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Lester Higata knew his life was about to end when he walked out on the lanai behind his house in Makiki and saw his long-dead father sitting in a lawn chair near the little greenhouse where Lester kept his orchids.” Thus begins Barbara Hamby’s magical narrative of the life of a Japanese American man in Honolulu. The quietly beautiful linked stories in Lester Higata’s 20th Century bring us close to people who could be, and should be, our friends and neighbors and families. Starting in 1999 with his conversation with his father, continuing backward in time throughout his life with his wife, Katherine, and their children in Hawai‘i, and ending with his days in the hospital in 1946, as he heals from a wartime wound and meets the woman he will marry, Hamby recreates not just one but any number of the worlds that have shaped Lester. The world of his mother, as stubbornly faithful to Japan and Buddhism as Katherine’s mother is to Ohio and conservative Christianity; the world of his children, whose childhoods and adulthoods are vastly different from his own; the world after Pearl Harbor and Vietnam; the world of a professional engineer and family man: the worlds of Lester Higata’s 20th Century are filled with ordinary people living extraordinary lives, moving from farms to classrooms and offices, from racism to acceptance and even love, all in a setting so paradisal it should be heaven on earth. Never forgetting the terrors of wartime—“We wake one morning with the wind racing toward us like an animal, and nothing is ever the same”—but focusing on the serene joys of peacetime, Lester populates his worlds with work, faith, and family among the palm trees and blue skies of the island he loves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I'm always impressed by pioneering efforts. This anthology represents a noteworthy beginning for this group of writers. From the triumphs over adversity dramatized in the first section, to the heartwarming and heartbreaking stories and poems of the final grouping, they show us sensitivity and inspire strength. They show us disability as it is lived honestly. Fables, fantasies, and tips about writing add something new, making this publication a unique contribution to disability literature."-Erik Weihenmayer, author of Touch the Top of the World and The Adversity Advantage Disabled people, in most ways, are just like everyone else. So it should come as no surprise that the stories, essays, and poems in Behind Our Eyes deal with situations and emotions that confront all of us: family and marriage, love and heartbreak, discord, appreciation of nature, and the desire to engage in the world more fully. In this uplifting collection, we read about the dedication of a guide dog who protects a blind woman and her young children from a burglar until police arrive; the inner struggle for a stroke victim whose world is rearranged overnight; the challenges faced by disabled children, spouses, and seniors when their families see their limitations instead of their abilities; the difficulty faced by a blind man coping with a team of insensitive doctors and nurses who seem to keep forgetting he can't see; and much more. A real and candid portrait of life with disability as well as an entertaining foray into the minds and hearts of a beautifully diverse group of people, Behind Our Eyes urges and inspires us to meet even our loftiest goals, embrace our individual vulnerabilities, and let our own imaginations soar.

  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Tattoo written by Chris McKinney and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A book about ‘the sins of the fathers.’ . . . A gritty, troubling book.”—The Honolulu Advertiser “The other Hawai’i, the one tourists never get to see.”—Ian MacMillan Ken Hideyoshi is the new guy in Halawa Correctional Institute. He’s tough looking, a hard case, observes his cellmate Cal—the mute tattoo artist of the prison, a wife murderer. SYN, a gang symbol, is tattooed on his hand, and he has a Japanese emblem inscribed on his left shoulder. He asks Cal for a tattoo on his back, in kanji script, of Musashi’s Book of the Void. While he is being worked on, he tells Cal his life story, a tale of hardship and abuse. Motherless, he was raised by a distant father, a Vietnam War veteran, in the impoverished hinterlands. In his teen years he hung out with the native Hawaiian gangs and was drawn into the Hawaiian-Korean underworld of strip bars and massage parlors. His ambition and proud samurai spirit seem, inevitably, to lead to his downfall. Chris McKinney is of Korean, Japanese, and Scottish descent. He was born in Honolulu and grew up in Kahaluu. He portrays the native Hawaiian experience from the inside, where children of mixed ethnicity grow up far from the clear water and pristine beaches of the rich visitors’ resorts.

Book excerpt: Commander Kristina Torres, the U.S. Navy's preeminent weapons designer, once had a dream of commanding her own ship. But her father's over-protective demeanor, and a horrifying experience when she was a teenager have all but ended any realization of that dream. Her father, Admiral Ramon Torres, is the commanding officer of the Pacific Fleet, a force that faces a shortage of ships and captains on the eve of war with North Korea and China. He must enforce the globally-protested "Iron Clad blockade" around North Korea which has already caused the deaths of half a million people. Out of sheer rage and desperation, North Korea has given the U.S. just 24 hours to lift the blockade before it launches every last man, shell and missile onto South Korea and the 30,000 American troops stationed there. China waits patiently for this, planning to launch a million landing troops on Taiwan on the heels of the initial attack. At the moment, Admiral Torres' daughter is in waters north of Hawaii, on the testbed ship USS Gettysburg, testing weapons that she herself designed. She's thousands of miles away from any war zone, any threat. She's utterly safe. . .at least that's what he thinks. Stalking behind a pending typhoon is a massive predator. The North Korean juggernaut-the Kim-Il-Sung-has sailed across the Pacific to deliver a message to the U.S. government and the world. When the Kim Il-Sung spots the Gettysburg, it unleashes its message.

Book God s Good Morning

Download or read book God s Good Morning written by Betty Raymond Gubler and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manuscript of God's "Good Morning" is just what the subtitle claims. It is a retelling of my spiritual journey raising an autistic son who is now fifty-four years old. Our son lives at home with his parents and will do so until my husband Greg and I become incapable of parenting him due to old age or our passing at which time, our son will live with his sister. Thus, this relationship is a lifelong commitment. This manuscript is a story of the growth of faith, hope, and love. My intention of writing such a manuscript is that of my desire to share with other parents of a special needs child my experiences dealing with this daunting challenge. This is not a clinical manuscript, but rather a manuscript of personal growth from shock, despair, and discouragement to acceptance, peace, and joy and reveals the miraculous healing of my broken spirit. Although this manuscript is written for parents of special needs children, it would also be found inspiring by a general audience of readers.
