Book excerpt: Haji Gora Haji, born in 1933 on the island of Tumbatu, Zanzibar, represents a living archive of poetic and philosophical knowledge, which is transformed into verses with a characteristic voice enriched by dialectal features (from Tumbatu and Unguja). As a recognition of his life-long commitment to Swahili language and literature, the editors, Flavia Aiello and Irene Brunotti, with Nathalie Arnold Koenings for translation, decided to work hard on conceiving a publishing project of Shuwari, his poetical anthology or diwani, fashioned as a bilingual Swahili-English edition which, along with the poems, could offer some analytical insights into Haji Gora Haji's artistry.

Book Grasp the Shield Firmly the Journey is Hard

Download or read book Grasp the Shield Firmly the Journey is Hard written by Zedekia Oloo Siso and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of oral histories about the movement of Luo and some Bantu-speaking peoples. It includes histories of many clans or ethnic groups, and how drought, warfare, disease, and competition over pastoral resources in western Kenya forced them to look for a land that they could call their own. Highly entertaining, the stories cross over from pre-colonial to post-colonial eras, with tales of fooling the colonial officers, winning battles and producing miracles. Although warriors and chiefs play a critical part in the stories so too do unlikely actors such as women, prophets, and common farmers. As one of the elders put it, "Without history you are like wild animals... you need to know where you came from and who you are." People with kinship connections to the ethnic groups represented here will delight in the references to places, people, kin groups and events. Residents of western Kenya will be able to trace some of their genealogies to North Mara and vice versa. Historians and anthropologists will find in this book a rich primary source for their own research. Those interested in cultural change will find this a fascinating case of Luo assimilation: events chronicled in this book are still underway and observable in communities today. Producing the text in both Swahili and English ensures that local people will have access to these histories for their own learning and on-going discussions about the past.

Mwishowe, kuna orodha ya msamiati mpya uliotumika katika fasihi kwa minajili ya kuneemesha welekevu wa mada za karne ya mitandao na utandawazi. ENGLISH: Nyayo za Obama is a literary piece of work that tells the story of US president Barack Obama, starting with his ancestral connections in Africa to the nation of liberty, opportunity and justice for all- the United States of America. It is a compilation of anecdotes that tracks his life through a variety of socioeconomic and geographic influences which shaped his vision of himself and that of the world around him, and how he walked a tight rope of racial diversity he found in his life. It discusses his early career as a community organizer and how that experience led him to a meteoric political career and seemingly insurmountable challenges he had to face, first in his own state of Illinois and eventually on the natioanl scene. The book discusses the Obama’s political success in the context of a nation that, though still suffers the social-economic scars of slavery and racial preferences, has beeen steadily changing in many ways for the better, enough to allow the election of its president from a race that was once doomed to slavery and human indignities. It highlights the salient qualities of its kind of democracy predicated on the founding documents and economic freedom which makes it the market of the world; it informs about the nation’s history as the most charitable nation in the world and the champion of the rule of law and equal opportunity for all. It is written in the Swahili language, which is the lingua franca of several nations in Eastern and Central Africa regions of the continent, and the most important African language south of the Sahara desert. It will be among few books in Swahili that provides expositions about the United States and its history and the changing face of its people, economy and its role in the global village. The book comes with a list of vocabulary of English translations of some of the words that have been used but may not be common in the available Swahili litereature.

Book Telling Our Own Stories

Download or read book Telling Our Own Stories written by Shetler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of ethnic group histories, written by authors from the Mara Region of Tanzania, local people tell their stories as a way to inspire development that builds on the strengths of the past. It combines histories from the small, but closely related, ethnic groups of Ikizu, Sizaki, Ikoma, Ngoreme, Nata, Ishenyi and Tatoga in South Mara, east of Lake Victoria and west of Serengeti National Park. Many of the authors compiled their stories by meeting with groups of elders. They were concerned to preserve history for the next generation who had not taken the time to learn the stories orally. The stories were written in Swahili and translated into English with annotations and an introduction so that readers not familiar with this region might also share in the experience. It also includes transcriptions of oral interviews with some of the same stories to get a sense of the ongoing conversions about the past. This collection makes local history told in a local idiom accessible to students of African history interested in social memory and the creation of ethnicity.
