Download or read book Oil Palm Breeding written by Aik Chin Soh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil palm is a remarkable crop, producing around 40% of the world’s vegetable oil from around 6% of the land devoted to oil crops. Conventional breeding has clearly been the major focus of genetic improvement in this crop. A mix of improved agronomy and management, coupled with breeding selection have quadrupled the oil yield of the crop since breeding began in earnest in the 1920s. However, as for all perennial crops with long breeding cycles, oil palm faces immense challenges in the coming years with increased pressure from population growth, climate change and the need to develop environmentally sustainable oil palm plantations. In Oil Palm: Breeding, Genetics and Genomics, world leading organizations and individuals who have been at the forefront of developments in this crop, provide their insights and experiences of oil palm research, while examining the different challenges that face the future of the oil palm. The editors have all been involved in research and breeding of oil palm for many years and use their knowledge of the crop and their disciplinary expertise to provide context and to introduce the different research topics covered.

Book Evaluation of the Fatty Acid Composition of the Palm NIFOR Mutation Breeding Programme

Download or read book Evaluation of the Fatty Acid Composition of the Palm NIFOR Mutation Breeding Programme written by Maureen E. Bafor and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two sample sizes (size 'a' = 273 palms, size 'b' = 104 palms) of fresh palm fruits were obtained from palms in a mutagenized population. The mesocarp storage lipids were examined for changes in their fatty acid composition. No dramatic changes were observed. However, palms P49 and P510 contained high levels of oleic acid (56.3 and 60.3 mole % respectively) which could be increased by traditional breeding techniques of selfting or crossing of the two palms to produce elite palms with quite high oleic content. There was very high cirrelation between palmitic and oleic acid levels not shown between any of the other major fatty acids of oil palm mecocarp triacylglycerols. [Authors' abstract].

Download or read book The Oil Palm Genome written by Maizura Ithnin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles the fundamental advances resulting from of oil-palm genome and transcriptome sequencing, and describes the challenges faced and strategies applied in sequencing, assembling and annotating oil palm genome sequences. The availability of genome and transcriptome data has made the mining of a high number of new molecular markers useful for genetic diversity as well as marker-trait association studies and the book presents high-throughput genotyping platforms, which allow the detection of QTL regions associated with interesting oil palm traits such as oil unsaturation and yield components using classical genetic and association mapping approaches. Lastly, it also presents the discovery of major genes governing economically important traits of the oil palm. Covering the history of oil palm expansion, classical and molecular cytogenetics, improvements based on wild and advanced genetic materials, and the science of oil palm breeding, the book is a valuable resource for scientists involved in plant genetic research.

Book The Genetic Base of Oil Plam Breeding Populations

Download or read book The Genetic Base of Oil Plam Breeding Populations written by E. A. Rosenquist and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper considers oil palm breeding populations of restricted origin which have been developed from wild or almost wild palms. Several Deli dura populations derived from the four palms have been developed independently. Breeding populations derived from wild palms in Zaire, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Nigeria are considered. Progress will be achieved by introgressions of such populations but it also considered desirable to maintain them as pure breeding populations without introgression. [Author's abstract].

Book The Role of Biotechnology in Oil Palm Breeding

Download or read book The Role of Biotechnology in Oil Palm Breeding written by P. T. H. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years, advances in molecular genetics have led to increasing optimism that such advances will enhance the ability of breeders to rapidly incorporate isolate, characterized gene sequences of agronomic importance into classical breeding programmes. However, it is now becoming clear, that although transformation techniques are aplicable to many agriculturally important plants such as oil palm, many difficulties limit their effectiveness. These difficulties include the stability and expression levels of the transformation genes, the inheret variability in many plants regenerated from tissue culture and finnaly, the paucity of genes of any agricultural use. The purpose of this paper is to describe some of the advances in techniques which may be applicable to oil palm breeding, as well as a description of some of the genetic difficulties that are inheret.
