Book Ponderings During the Pandemic

Download or read book Ponderings During the Pandemic written by Yvonne Hall and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time of the COVID-19 Pandemic was a time of quarantine and isolation for many people, causing much loneliness and sadness. As an Associate Minister and a member of a few ministries in my church, I felt led to try to bring some encouragement and inspiration to the members of these ministries. And so, with the aid and anointing of the Holy Spirit, I began frequently sending these short messages to the ministries via e-mail. Those messages have resulted in the compilation of this present work. They are my thoughts, reflections, musings, and meditations during the year-long period of quarantine, isolation and restrictions. However, the majority of these reflections are not merely my thoughts, but they are scripturally based, backed by the Word of God. Some of them may be considered Sermonettes. For example, let's take a look at one of the readings dated April 1, 2020 and entitled "In the Valley." Psalm 23:4 says "Yea though I walk through the valley and the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." Because of this Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are most certainly in a valley right now. Sickness and death are all around us. Nevertheless, the operative phrase in this verse is: "THROUGH THE VALLEY" with emphasis on the word, "THROUGH." Yes the situation seems dark right now; it's frightening and scary, but it's also temporary. We shall not stay in this valley. We can put our CONFIDENCE in the Lord of the valley, believe that He will lead us THROUGH this valley. Also, we are not alone in this valley, for the Lord of the valley is with us. He is our COMPANY-KEEPER, and if we can look away from the scary shadows and focus on the company-keeper, the author and finisher of our faith, He will keep us by His grace and mercy, and we know that His grace is sufficient, and His mercy endures forever. Finally, this verse not only gives us confidence and a company-keeper, but it promises COMFORT, and this comfort comes from the Lord of the valley's Rod and His staff--the Written Word and the Living Word. The Written Word (the Bible) with its promises of provision and protection is our source of comfort, and the Living Word, who is Jesus, our Shepherd, leads us THROUGH this valley. "Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He will strengthen our heart. WAIT, I SAY, ON THE LORD!" (Psalm 27:14). In April of 2020, many folk were becoming so anxious, so devastated, and actually fearful of what was happening, I was led to try to help people understand that they were not alone, and that they would get through it in God's time. Although, at this writing, we are almost completely through that valley, it is my prayer that these readings will continue to strengthen you and comfort you in any other "valley" you may find yourself going through.

Book God and the Pandemic

Download or read book God and the Pandemic written by TOM WRIGHT and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Superbly written, utterly Bible based. . . Do not hesitate!’ Archbishop Justin Welby What are we supposed to think about the coronavirus crisis? Some people think they know: ‘This is a sign of the End,’ they say. ‘It’s all predicted in the book of Revelation.’ Others disagree but are equally clear: ‘This is a call to repent. God is judging the world and through this disease he’s telling us to change.’ Some join in the chorus of blame and condemnation: ‘It’s the fault of the Chinese, the government, the World Health Organization...' Tom Wright examines these reactions to the virus and finds them wanting. Instead, he invites you to consider a different way of seeing and responding – a way that draws on the teachings and examples of scripture, and above all on the way of living, thinking and praying revealed to us by Jesus.

Book The Juggling Mother

Download or read book The Juggling Mother written by Amanda D. Watson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is the juggling mother, the woman who quietly flicks dried cereal off her blazer while running a corporate empire? The Juggling Mother explores the figure of contemporary mothering in media representations: a typically white, middle-class woman on the verge of coming undone because of her unwieldy slate of labours. More troublingly, she also serves as a model neoliberal worker who upholds white privilege and notions of mastery, capacity, and productivity. Amanda Watson makes the controversial case that mothers with the most power are complicit in the exclusion of less privileged ones – and in their own undoing.

Book A Testament of Devotion

Download or read book A Testament of Devotion written by Thomas R. Kelly and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1996-08-02 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1941, A Testament of Devotion, by the renowned Quaker teacher Thomas Kelly, has been universally embraced as a truly enduring spiritual classic. Plainspoken and deeply inspirational, it gathers together five compelling essays that urge us to center our lives on God's presence, to find quiet and stillness within modern life, and to discover the deeply satisfying and lasting peace of the inner spiritual journey. As relevant today as it was a half-century ago, A Testament of Devotion is the ideal companion to that highest of all human arts-the lifelong conversation between God and his creatures. I have in mind something deeper than the simplification of our external programs, our absurdly crowded calendars of appointments through which so many pantingly and frantically gasp. These do become simplified in holy obedience, and the poise and peace we have been missing can really be found. But there is a deeper, an internal simplification of the whole of one's personality, stilled, tranquil, in childlike trust listening ever to Eternity's whisper, walking with a smile into the dark."

Download or read book Hidden Scars written by Aliker P’Ocitti and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-10-06 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Hidden Scars Collection, the Poet uses Covid19 quarantine moments to recollect his mind on his life’s inspirational philosophy on Love and Loss, Suffering and Success, Politics and Power, Choices and Chances, Pain and Passion, and Life and Death. In March 2020, Governmant of Uganda announced a national Lockdown in response to the global Covid19 Pandemic. The Lockdown was accompanied by a global stay home, stay safe campaign which lead the poet to a life in solitude reading and writing at home. The sad moments of solitude inspired the Writer to draft, write and compile inspirational poems from reflections in his life and pened his first poem on Covid19 which he published on Facebook and eventually in the book Musings During a Time of Pandemic: A World Anthology of Poems on COVID-2019 titled Quarantine in Gulu edited and compiled by Dr. Christopher Okemwa. Finding his poetic voice, the poet penned more than 50 poems in 12 months as he clocked the magical age of 40 in May 2020 by spending most of his troubled unemployed life and love life, midlife crisis reflecting on Love and Loss, and Suffering and Success. Previously in 2016, the Poet had unsuccessfully campaigned for the elective political office of Mayor of Gulu Municipality (now City). The year 2020/2021 was also a national election year, and the poet had to decide either to run again or drop politics. Since he dropped politics and chose a private life to a public life; he also spent most of his private life in solitude reading, researching and writing on the themes like politics and power, Choices and Chances. After surviving contracting Covid19 numerous times after friends within his social connections contracted Covid19 infection; the poet in his writings reflects more on Faith and Fear, and Life and Death. The Poet as a motivational speaker and scholar has always treasured sharing his life’s miseries and opportunities in a way that inspires others who could find healing and meaning from his past experiences. He uses his poetic voice as a mirror of the conscience of those whose life paths are similar to his life’s experiences. Hence, he reflects and writes more on Suffering and Success. The purpose of this poetic compilation is to share his life’s inspirational philosophy by offering a voice to those whose voices are barely heard and to contribute to the already chanting voices on similar themes of life. While these are the poets philosophical life reflections that defined his life story; it is in no way a gospel truth on how to live life but one other tried and tasted alternative philosophy of life that could inspire your life to love, success and power.

We want to make decisions that move us along, but we are also fearful about making the wrong choice. Especially, during this pandemic we are fearful about our lives being touched by others, but with a deep desire to stay connected. These meditations trace the emotional upheaval of our struggle as well as provide hopeful solace in the struggle itself. Philosophers, sociologists, psychologists, spiritual advisors, and theologians are useful sources to this journey. In my endeavor to clarify and advance the singularity of our struggle, I have gleaned from many of those listed above. But most of all I have endeavored to dive into my own vulnerability, connecting myself to the human struggle for security and love.
