Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Philosophical Musings, Rogers introduces students to philosophy by focusing attention on some of the most interesting and challenging questions philosophers have wrestled with for the past 2,500 years. In this engaging, thorough, and accessible introduction, Rogers lays a philosophical foundation by asking how philosophy began, how it developed, and why we should study it. With this basic foundation in place, Rogers then asks a series of questions that provide students with insights not only into what philosophy is, but into some of life's most important questions, including: What can be known? Why is there something rather than nothing? Does God exist? What is God like? Why is there evil in the world? What kind of beings are humans? Are we really free to choose? What is the purpose of life? Is there life after death? How should human beings live? In addition to introducing and discussing these provocative questions, Rogers includes readings from some of history's most significant philosophers, as well as analyses of arguments that have been made for each of the issues under consideration.

Book Philosophical Issues in the Psychology of C G Jung

Download or read book Philosophical Issues in the Psychology of C G Jung written by Marilyn Nagy and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 434 pages. Using the conceptual framework of traditional Western philosophy, Nagy studies the internal structure of Jung's theory. His epistemology, his ontology (archetypes), and his teleological views (individuation and theory of self) are analyzed in the context of late nineteenth and early twentieth century philosophical and scientific problems. Jung's psychology is a response to the challenge of Freud and to the rise of the empirical sciences.

Download or read book My Beautiful Despair written by Kim Kierkegaardashian and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Reflective maxims on life, death, sin, and emptiness, salted with luxury accessories of the Kardashian lifestyle...@KimKierkegaard is dross turned gold, redemption through absurdity in a hundred and forty characters.” –The New Yorker In “the ultimate meeting of the sublime with the ridiculous” (London Evening Standard) My Beautiful Despair blends the existential philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard with the superficial musings of Kim Kardashian West, based on the popular Twitter feed @KimKierkegaard. Kierkegaardashian shares thoughts on fashion, beauty, brunch, and the relentless waves of existential dread that wash over us day after day. A sample of the revelations include: – I have majorly fallen off my workout-eating plan! AND it's summer. But to despair over sin is to sink deeper into it. – Obsessed with protecting your skin, lips, hair & face from the sun? Close the cover of the coffin tight, really tight, and be at peace. – I like my men like I like my coffee: a momentary comfort in the midst of all my suffering. – What is the operation by which a self relates itself to its own self, transparently? Selfie. – What if everything in life were a misunderstanding, what if laughter were really tears? Scared LOL!! – I’ve been going to bed a little bit earlier each night, to get a taste of death. In an age where the line between news and entertainment is blurrier than ever before, and the difference between a celebrity and the leader of the free world is nil, Kierkegaardashian’s insights perfectly reflect our absurd, hilarious, and deeply disturbing new era. @KimKierkegaard has been admired, praised, and adored in The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Financial Times, The Economist, New York, Buzzfeed, and more, and has amassed nearly a quarter of a million Twitter followers, including J.K. Rowling and Anna Kendrick. Now in a humorous, illustrated gift book, perfectly suited for our existential times, Kierkegaardashian’s philosophical insights are juxtaposed for the first time with Dash Shaw’s brilliant black-and-white illustrations.

The authors I quote and muse about all have certain knowledge and wisdom from their respective crafts, that I admire, and I would like to share this perennial wisdom with the world as I believe it is lacking wisdom to further proceed in its evolution in this paradigm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this book are to provide a new translation of Plato's M eno together with a series of studies on its philcisophical argument in the light of recent secondary literature. My translation is based mainly on the Oxford Classical Text, 1. Burnet's Platonis Opera (Oxford Clarendon Press 1900) Vol. III. In conjunction with this I have made extensive use of R.S. Bluck's Plato's Meno (Cam bridge University Press, 1964). At critical places in the dialogue I have also consulted A. Croiset's Gorgias, Menon (Bude text). My debt ~o two other sources will be clearly in evidence. They are E.S. Thompson's Plato's Meno (London, MacMillan 1901), and St. George Stock's The Meno of Plato (Oxford Clarendon Press, 1894). One of the greatest difficulties facing a translator is to achieve a balance between accuracy and elegance. Literal translations are more likely to be accurate, but, alas, they also tend to be duller. Free translations run into the opposite danger of paying for elegance and liveliness with the coin of inaccuracy. Another hurdle, for a translator of a Platonic dialogue, is posed by the challenge to maintain the conversational pattern and fast moving character of the discussion. This is easier where the exchang~s are short, but much more difficult where Socrates gets somewhat long-winded.

Download or read book Musings written by Christopher H. K. Persaud and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MUSINGS... 175 Reflections to Enliven Your Mind is a compendium of meditative attempts at unraveling the myriad elements of the human psyche. The reflections are both pragmatic and idealistic and encompass diverse mental and emotional states. They also address conceivable responses to a variety of psychological stimuli. MUSINGS...175 Reflections to Enliven Your Mind differs from traditional collections of philosophical rumination in that the deliberations contained in this book proceed from the intellect of a single individual and not from the minds of multiple writers. The aforementioned declaration is not intended to suggest in any way that the lone producer of the hundred and seventy-five ponderings presented in this book is superior to, or even on par with other thinkers and philosophers. The author is sure his thoughts reside on a plateau of intelligence and insight considerably lower than that applicable to logicians of international renown, and from whose musings readers are accustomed to derive inspiration and delight. As a matter of fact, the dilettante who presents the reflections in this book mulls over the possibility that the reader may encounter a fair measure of boredom and dissatisfaction, although he hopes there would be a few redeeming theories in the assemblage of notions. The varied nature of the subjects addressed in MUSINGS...175 Reflections to Enliven Your Mind makes it expectable that the reader would find some of the quotations controversial. It is not the author's intention to offend anyone, and he apologizes if he does. It is hoped the photographs showcased in this book would help accentuate the reader's enjoyment, or at least temper his or her possible distaste for the author's contemplative offerings.
