Book The Morning Star Or Way Side Musings

Download or read book The Morning Star Or Way Side Musings written by William Newton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morning Star or Way-Side Musings: And Other Poems The story of this Little Book is very soon told. Twenty-five years ago, the subject first suggested itself. The course of thought, in its general outline, was determined on; the title selected, and the opening lines, as they now stand, were written. It was to be, literally, Way-Side Musings; for those lines were written - as, indeed, I expected the whole to be - during the course of my daily walk of three miles, to and from the school I was then teaching. How well do I remember turning aside, and resting my little blank book on the top-rail of the worm-fence, by the road-side, as I hurriedly dotted down my thoughts. I was younger then than now: and supposed that I could finish my Poem, before my six months' engagement as a Teacher, had expired. But I retain the Title still; for I confess to a fondness for it which it would be false to deny, and foolish to attempt to conceal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mystical Musings This little book is not published to sell (if it were it would probably be a failure), but merely as a gratuity with the hope of prolonging the memory of friendship after that friendship itself has ceased to be. Simplicity and sincerity has been its paramount point. Acknowledgment of it is not even necessary, unless it affords the recipient personal pleasure in doing so. May its truth and philosophy console and comfort you when I lie, at last, in "the dreamless sleep that lulls the dead." Book excerpt: When the death of Iron Queen Sarelin Brey fractures the realm of Elira, Lysande Prior, the palace scholar and the queen's closest friend, is appointed Councillor. Publically, Lysande must choose the next monarch from amongst the city-rulers vying for the throne. Privately, she seeks to discover which ruler murdered the queen, suspecting the use of magic. Resourceful, analytical, and quiet, Lysande appears to embody the motto she was raised with: everything in its place. Yet while she hides her drug addiction from her new associates, she cannot hide her growing interest in power. She becomes locked in a game of strategy with the city-rulers - especially the erudite prince Luca Fontaine, who seems to shift between ally and rival. Further from home, an old enemy is stirring: the magic-wielding White Queen is on the move again, and her alliance with a traitor among the royal milieu poses a danger not just to the peace of the realm, but to the survival of everything that Lysande cares about

Book excerpt: Search History oscillates between a wild cyberdog chase and lunch-date monologues as Eugene Lim deconstructs grieving and storytelling with uncanny juxtapositions and subversive satire. Frank Exit is dead—or is he? While eavesdropping on two women discussing a dog-sitting gig over lunch, a bereft friend comes to a shocking realization: Frank has been reincarnated as a dog! This epiphany launches a series of adventures—interlaced with digressions about AI-generated fiction, virtual reality, Asian American identity in the arts, and lost parents—as an unlikely cast of accomplices and enemies pursues the mysterious canine. In elliptical, propulsive prose, Search History plumbs the depths of personal and collective consciousness, questioning what we consume, how we grieve, and the stories we tell ourselves.

Book The Year of Magical Thinking

Download or read book The Year of Magical Thinking written by Joan Didion and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-02-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER • From one of America’s iconic writers, a stunning book of electric honesty and passion that explores an intensely personal yet universal experience: a portrait of a marriage—and a life, in good times and bad—that will speak to anyone who has ever loved a husband or wife or child. Several days before Christmas 2003, John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion saw their only daughter, Quintana, fall ill with what seemed at first flu, then pneumonia, then complete septic shock. She was put into an induced coma and placed on life support. Days later—the night before New Year’s Eve—the Dunnes were just sitting down to dinner after visiting the hospital when John Gregory Dunne suffered a massive and fatal coronary. In a second, this close, symbiotic partnership of forty years was over. Four weeks later, their daughter pulled through. Two months after that, arriving at LAX, she collapsed and underwent six hours of brain surgery at UCLA Medical Center to relieve a massive hematoma. This powerful book is Didion’ s attempt to make sense of the “weeks and then months that cut loose any fixed idea I ever had about death, about illness ... about marriage and children and memory ... about the shallowness of sanity, about life itself.
