Download or read book The Age of Confucian Rule written by Dieter Kuhn and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just over a thousand years ago, the Song dynasty emerged as the most advanced civilization on earth. Within two centuries, China was home to nearly half of all humankind. In this concise history, we learn why the inventiveness of this era has been favorably compared with the European Renaissance, which in many ways the Song transformation surpassed. With the chaotic dissolution of the Tang dynasty, the old aristocratic families vanished. A new class of scholar-officials—products of a meritocratic examination system—took up the task of reshaping Chinese tradition by adapting the precepts of Confucianism to a rapidly changing world. Through fiscal reforms, these elites liberalized the economy, eased the tax burden, and put paper money into circulation. Their redesigned capitals buzzed with traders, while the education system offered advancement to talented men of modest means. Their rationalist approach led to inventions in printing, shipbuilding, weaving, ceramics manufacture, mining, and agriculture. With a realist’s eye, they studied the natural world and applied their observations in art and science. And with the souls of diplomats, they chose peace over war with the aggressors on their borders. Yet persistent military threats from these nomadic tribes—which the Chinese scorned as their cultural inferiors—redefined China’s understanding of its place in the world and solidified a sense of what it meant to be Chinese. The Age of Confucian Rule is an essential introduction to this transformative era. “A scholar should congratulate himself that he has been born in such a time” (Zhao Ruyu, 1194).

Book A Way of Music Education

Download or read book A Way of Music Education written by C. Victor Fung and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving back through Dewey, Heidegger, Nietzsche, and Rousseau, the lineage of Western music education finds its origins in Plato and Pythagoras. Yet theories not rooted in the ancient Greek tradition are all but absent. A Way of Music Education provides a much-needed intervention, integrating ancient Chinese thought into the canon of music education in a structured, systematized, and philosophical way. The book's three central sources - the Yijing (The Book of Changes), Confucianism, and Daoism - inform author C. Victor Fung's argument: that the human being exists as an entity at the center of an organismic world in which all things and events, including music and music education, are connected. Fung ultimately proposes a new educational philosophy based on three key ideas in Chinese thought: change, balance, and liberation. A unique work, A Way of Music Education offers a universal approach engrained in a specific and ancient cultural tradition.

'Greece so thoroughly wrought out its conception of the beautiful human animal as to make an idol of it, and in order to glorify it on earth they made a divinity of it in heaven.'--The Philosophy of Art, by H. Tatne. LIKE one who looks over a city when day is beginning to break, I look o'er the million-homed age where we live, in the dusk of the dawn, Seeing the sunlight on steeples, or edging the turrets and towers, While the streets and the low-lying houses are grey in the gloaming or gloom. Light in the eye of the thinker; light on the brow of the wise, Dimmering shade in the spirit of him who is hopeless and low. But far on the fire-flashing mountains which circle the town of the time Flame brighter and higher the glories, though deeper and grander the gloom. Like gods freshly set on the summits, just resting a moment, but soon 1 The Return of the Gods. 7 To sweep down the sides to the valleys, and conquer the giants of night. Yes, they are coming in glory again to resplendour the world, The gods whom we thought were long-perished: Olympus is coming again. In the roar of the terrible engine, in boats which go onward by steam, Or the pathways of iron extending from ocean to ocean unbent, In bridges once buried, deep hidden, now binding the summits of cliffs; In wheels which are whirling for ever to multiply comfort for man: All this but the little beginning--all this but the mustard-seed small; When all is unfolded, oh Vulcan, wilt thou not be with us again? When Genius in infinite channels, when Labour writh infinite might Shall have solved all the problems we dream of, while solving, creating anew; When the branches while further diverging send quicker the sap to the root And the highest adventurous blossom...

Book Sizhu Instrumental Music of South China

Download or read book Sizhu Instrumental Music of South China written by Alan Thrasher and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to a reader's report, this is "one of the finest studies on (any kind of) Chinese music to emerge in recent years." Based on extensive fieldwork and a thorough knowledge of the scholarly literature, the author examines the theoretical underpinnings of the 'silk and bamboo' instrumental ensemble traditions of the Chaozhou, Hakka and Cantonese peoples of South China. Stepping back far into history, the book opens with a penetrating examination of Confucian theory, the ancient corpus of behavioral doctrine which promoted music as a means of achieving social harmony and which, together with Daoist belief, exercised unusually strong influence over common-practice music and aesthetics. This is followed by a rigorous analysis of the music itself, focusing upon linear and modal structures and performance styles which reflect a fascinating mix of ancient ideologies and more recent influences.

Book Musing with Confucius and Paul

Download or read book Musing with Confucius and Paul written by K. K. Yeo and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-07-20 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a manifesto or apologia for Chinese Christians. It seeks to articulate how it is possible to maintain a Chinese identity and a Christian identity at the same time without capitulating to some western or other cultural model of Christian identity. To be a Chinese Christian is to adopt a distinctive, unique identity that owes much to both traditions but is sui generis. Providing great resources for the construction of a Chinese Christian theology, Confucius and Paul converge across a surprisingly broad front. Yet, the Christ of the Cross completes or extends what is merely implicit or absent in Confucius; and Confucius amplifies various elements of Christian faith (e.g., community, virtues) that are underplayed in western Christianity. The Christ of God as found in Paul's letter to the Galatians brings Confucian ethics in the Analects to its fulfillment while protecting the church from the aberrations of Chinese history and while protecting China against the aberrations of Christian history in the west. Chinese Christianity has something to give the church that needs to be heard. China can develop its distinctive vision of Christianity for the sake of the church universal. Chinese Christianity will have its global mission if it can find its own authentic Chinese-Christian identity. Insofar as that identity brings the best of the Confucian tradition into the Christian story, it will help revivify global Christianity.
