Book Museum Stories for Children Vol 27

Download or read book Museum Stories for Children Vol 27 written by Field Museum of Natural History and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum Stories for Children, Vol. 27: October 3, 1936 The North American Indians have passed many arts on to us and beadwork is one of the finest. Any number of primitive people have used beads for ornamental purposes, but no people have produced as fine beadwork as have the North American Indians. There is great variety in Indian beadwork. Some designs are simple while others are wonderful and intricate in pattern. Most people look only long enough to marvel a bit at the skill and patience of the Indian women who could sew or weave together these sparkling glass beads. There is far more than just perfection of design and mere pictures in the beadwork. There are the thoughts and feelings of an Indian woman worked into that beaded object. Perhaps you see only a deer, but the deer meant food and life to the Indian. The Indians could not explain well their ideas of nature and of the Great Spirit but they worshiped nature and all its parts - the animals, trees and flowers. These things, along with their thoughts and legends, were expressed best in their arts. If you should look at a Sioux Indian object and find the storm bird pictured there, it is not just a bird - it refers to one of their legends. The storm bird of the Sioux dwells in the upper air, so high that we cannot see it with our eyes. It carries in its beak a lake of fresh water. When it winks its eye, there is lightning. When it flaps its wings we hear thunder and when it shakes its plumage the rain descends. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum Stories for Children, Vol. 7: October-November, 1927 Perhaps you wonder what these creatures find to eat so high on the mountains. Much of their food consists of various kinds of moss which grow in patches among the rocks. Sometimes they eat buds and twigs of small mountain shrubs; and once in a while they come down into the forests and mountain valleys to nibble at leaves and grass. Mountain goats always manage to find enough food to keep themselves strong and fat both in summer and in winter. Wild sheep sometimes live on the same mountain as the goats; but they seldom climb as high nor stay as long in one region. Mountain sheep are often seen in flocks; and one of them sometimes stands alone on top of a rock, like a sentinel on guard. If it sees you, it may warn the others and the whole flock will bound away and disappear like magic behind the rocks. Their long slender legs carry the heavy bodies with great speed. Some mountain sheep are white; but most of them have coats so near the color of the rocks that it is hard to see the animals unless they are moving. Their hair is thick and warm, yet not at all shaggy. Sometimes in summer it becomes stained reddish-brown from the earth. The tail of a wild sheep is so short that it seems to have none at all. Every wild sheep has horns; and those of some mountain sheep are so large that the animal is called Bighorn. The horns of full-grown rams describe almost a circle; but those of ewes and lambs are short and slightly curving. The Indians are divided into groups or clans called by names such as: Eagles, Wolves, Grizzly Bears, Ravens and other creatures. Each group has the right to tell certain stories, usually about their relations with the animals; and each has the right to carve or paint pictures of certain animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum Stories for Children, Vol. 12: October-December, 1929 One of the greatest thrills you can ever experience will come when you have an opportunity to climb a very high mountain. Usually, the lower slopes are covered with magnificent forests. Beyond this comes an area of gnarled, twisted trees that cling closely to Mother Earth for support and shelter. Highest of all is the region of jagged, barren rocks. This is. The kingdom of cloud and wind, and wind is a relentless ruler. It IS in this land that glaciers have their beginning. Tiny wisps of vapor cradled in winds from far distant seas, or wafted up from the lowlands beneath, are here swept into cloud masses which swirl about the treeless summits, fill the crevices, or change at the touch of the wind into flakes of snow. At first, these flakes are dry and powdery, drift about and fall upon the upper heights. They fill the hollows which are sheltered from the strong winds and if the mountain is extremely high, as in Alaska or Switzerland, the snow may accumulate until its own weight is such as to cause it to creep slowly out of its hollow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Museum Stories for Children, Vol. 18: February-April, 1932 When white people first came to live in North America, they found that houses of many kinds had been built by Indians of forest, plain, seaside, and desert. Generally, the Indians had used whatever materials were most plentiful and convenient in the regions in which they lived. In the eastern woodlands, the common type of house had a frame of poles covered with sheets of bark from large trees, or with mats made of rushes. Such houses were called Wigwams, and were of many shapes and sizes. Usually there was only one room, even when several families shared a house. Beds were made on platforms along the walls, and the fireplace was in the middle of the floor, with a smokehole in the roof above it. The Iroquois Indians had long wigwams with a door at each end. A passageway connected the doors, and the space on either side was divided into rooms, one for each family in the house. Fireplaces were in the middle of the passageway, one for each four families. The Iroquois called themselves People of the Long House. Along the Missouri and Platte Rivers, large earth lodges were used by Indians who raised corn, beans and squashes, and who lived in the same place from year to year. An earth lodge had a strong frame of posts and beams, covered with earth and sod. Each house looked like a hill, or even, with smoke coming out of the hole in the roof, like a little volcano. The Wichita Indians of Kansas lived in dome shaped houses of poles covered with a thatch of dried grass. The Wichita were farmer people, who traded with their hunter neighbors, exchanging corn and beans for meat and hides. Most tribes of the western plains depended on hunting for their food. As they followed the buffalo herds from pasture to pasture, they needed shelters which they could take with them. These tribes used tipis. A woman who needed a new tipi first prepared buffalo hides for the cover. Then she invited her friends to an all-day sewing bee. The women had good times joking and telling stories as they sewed the hides together. A dozen or twenty long poles were set up for the frame. These were fastened together near the upper ends, with the lower ends spread out in a circle. The cover was fitted over the poles and fastened down the front, leaving holes above and below for smokehole and door. Such a skin tent could be easily and quickly set up and taken down, and was roomy and comfortable even in winter, when a small fire kept it warm. Many tribes who ordinarily lived in wigwams or earth lodges used tipis on hunting trips. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Like most children, they were especially fond of games in which they imitated the work of their fathers and mothers. Many tribes secured most of their food by hunting wild animals. In the old days, little boys always had their own bows and arrows, made by their fathers or grandfathers. They were not allowed to have sharp arrows until they had learned to shoot straight, that they might not hurt other people. They often shot at marks, and spent much time hunting small animals.
