But how much do we really know about the moment-by-moment transactions that comprise the intricate experiences of visitors? However, even as the museum grew into a distinguished collection, there were threats of closure. The DIA has walked a financial tightrope since it opened just over a century ago, and was nearly closed by government funding cuts in the 1970s and 1990s. Now Jeffrey Abt tells how the DIA has had to struggle to maintain its fine art collection with barely enough income to remain open. A Museum on the Verge goes behind the scenes at the DIA to disclose the political, economic, and social forces that shaped the museum from its founding to the present day. Drawing on new archival research, Abt reveals that the growing discrepancy between the museum's size and its operating budget was the result of a century of ad hoc solutions to institutional problems that left the DIA vulnerable to annual income losses -- especially reductions of government funding. Others keep diaries, plan annual family gatherings, or stitch together patchwork quilts in a tradition learned from grandparents. Each of us has ways of communing with the past, and our reasons for doing so are as varied as our memories. In a sweeping survey, Roy Rosenzweig and David Thelen asked 1,500 Americans about their connection to the past and how it influences their daily lives and hopes for the future. The result is a surprisingly candid series of conversations and reflections on how the past infuses the present with meaning. Rosenzweig and Thelen found that people assemble their experiences into narratives that allow them to make sense of their personal histories, set priorities, project what might happen next, and try to shape the future. By using these narratives to mark change and create continuity, people chart the courses of their lives. A young woman from Ohio speaks of giving birth to her first child, which caused her to reflect upon her parents and the ways that their example would help her to become a good mother. An African American man from Georgia tells how he and his wife were drawn to each other by their shared experiences and lessons learned from growing up in the South in the 1950s. Others reveal how they personalize historical events, as in the case of a Massachusetts woman who traces much of her guarded attitude toward life to witnessing the assassination of John F. Kennedy on television when she was a child. While the past is omnipresent to Americans, "history" as it is usually defined in textbooks leaves many people cold. Rosenzweig and Thelen found that history as taught in school does not inspire a strong connection to the past. And they reveal how race and ethnicity affects how Americans perceive the past: while most white Americans tend to think of it as something personal, African Americans and American Indians are more likely to think in terms of broadly shared experiences--like slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and the violation of Indian treaties." Rosenzweig and Thelen's conclusions about the ways people use their personal, family, and national stories have profound implications for anyone involved in researching or presenting history, as well as for all those who struggle to engage with the past in a meaningful way.

Book excerpt: Questo libro è il risultato di un progetto di ricerca internazionale finanziato e con sede presso l'Università di Roma Tre (coordinato da Stefano Mastandrea). Lo scopo del progetto di ricerca è stato quello di creare un questionario su larga scala per indagare atteggiamenti, motivazioni, tratti di personalità, emozioni e processi di apprendimento in materia di visite museali da parte di giovani adulti. Il gruppo di ricerca era costituito da studiosi di otto diversi Paesi: Austria, Francia, Ungheria, Italia, Nuova Zelanda, Portogallo, Taiwan e Stati Uniti. I partecipanti della ricerca (N = 2.247) erano costituiti da un campione di studenti universitari senza specifica formazione artistica, provenienti da tre diversi Dipartimenti (psicologia, educazione e sociologia). I risultati principali hanno mostrato che circa il 75% del campione totale ha visitato almeno un museo negli ultimi 12 mesi e circa il 40% ha visitato tra 2 e 5 musei. I musei più visitati sono stati quelli di arte moderna. I partecipanti hanno riportato un buon livello di soddisfazione rispetto alle visite condotte. Complessivamente le emozioni prevalenti riferite alle visite erano la curiosità, l'interesse e il piacere; tuttavia, le emozioni variavano a seconda del tipo di museo visitato: godimento estetico per l'arte antica, godimento estetico e interesse per l'arte moderna, divertimento e curiosità per i musei scientifici. Nell’ottobre 2013 è stato organizzato a Roma, dal Dipartimento di Scienze della Formazione e dal Laboratorio di Psicologia Sperimentale dell'Università Roma Tre, un congresso a cui hanno partecipato tutti i partner internazionali del progetto presentando i risultati di ogni singola unità di ricerca.
