Book excerpt: Una de las características principales del público general que visita un museo, es su heterogeneidad. Por ello vamos a encontrarnos con diferentes perfiles de visitantes que presentan a su vez diferentes características, expectativas y necesidades. Va a ser pues fundamental su conocimiento y estudio, tanto previa como posteriormente a su visita, para intentar que la experiencia expositiva sea lo más satisfactoria posible al mayor número de visitantes. Los estudios de público en los museos se dirigen a determinar las características particulares, opiniones, convenciones, motivaciones y preferencias de los visitantes, por lo que se han convertido en una herramienta fundamental para las instituciones culturales y museísticas. No solo porque les ayuda a mejorar cuantitativamente (incrementando el número de visitantes o captando a un nuevo público potencial), sino que también les ayuda a mejorar cualitativamente (a cumplir y medir mejor sus objetivos, a llegar mejor a su público adaptando sus dispositivos didácticos y museográficos a estas diferentes necesidades y mejorando su accesibilidad, recorridos, etc.) Hasta hace poco, estos estudios no estaban muy extendidos entre los espacios y centros de arte, y además han estado enfocados principalmente en determinar tan solo los aspectos sociodemográficos de los visitantes. Pero esta información por sí sola no resulta de valor para entender las verdaderas razones de la visita o no visita del público a un museo de arte contemporáneo, y será necesario entender y analizar también los factores psicológicos y socioculturales, el estilo de vida y hábitos de ocio de las personas, así como las características propias y físicas de este tipo de museos y sus contenidos. Hoy día podemos constatar que existe una tendencia en el ámbito de los museos de arte de mantener la obra sin elementos de mediación que ayuden a los visitantes a su comprensión y contextualización. Book excerpt: Se estudian en esta obra las cambiantes definiciones a las que, a lo largo de sus casi dos siglos de existencia, se han ajustado, con mayor o menor conformidad, los museos especializados en el arte más reciente, para cuya denominación se han empleado muchas alternativas: museo de arte moderno, museo de arte contemporáneo, pero también de artistas vivos, de arte actual..., expresiones cuyo sentido ha ido variando en función de los paradigmas museísticos de cada época: el parisino Musée des Artistes Vivants fue el modelo y contramodelo más influyente en el siglo XIX y principios del XX, un papel en el que sería sucedido por el MoMA de Nueva York. En España y en casi todo el mundo estamos viviendo una eclosión de museos de arte moderno o contemporáneo, unas nuevas tipologías que generan un creciente interés por parte de los museólogos, de la misma manera que hace unas décadas los ecomuseos fueron el caballo de batalla favorito de los adalides de la nouvelle muséologie, que renovaron desde posicionamientos progresistas y sociales esta joven disciplina científica. Quienes hoy se identifican con la llamada critical museology comparten esas mismas inquietudes sociales, pero son más descreídos en cuanto a la idea de progreso, inclusive en el campo artístico, tanto si su encarnación museística es el MoMA como otro contramodelo posterior. Más que una triunfal historia lineal de los museos de vanguardia, el hilo discursivo de este libro se estructura en ocho capítulos que marcan los puntos de inflexión histórica, de ruptura, sin renunciar a describir proyectos museísticos que no llegaron a término o que alcanzaron escasa pervivencia. Por último, a falta de perspectiva histórica para integrar mejor en la trama general del ensayo los nuevos museos y los nuevos interrogantes surgidos en el último cuarto de siglo, se les dedica un epílogo donde se ha seleccionado un amplio muestrario desde el punto de vista del papel de los museos en los procesos de revitalización urbana.

Following an introduction that sets out the historiography and considering questions of terminology, the first part of the book then examines the paradigm of the Musée des Artistes Vivants in Paris and its equivalents in the rest of Europe during the nineteenth century. The second part takes the story forward from 1930 to the present, presenting New York's Museum of Modern Art as a new universal role model that found emulators or 'contramodels' in the rest of the Western world during the twentieth century. An epilogue, reviews recent museum developments in the last decades. Through its adoption of a long-term, worldwide perspective, the book not only provides a narrative of the development of museums of contemporary art, but also sets this into its international perspective. By assessing the extent to which the great museum-capitals - Paris, London and New York in particular - created their own models of museum provision, as well as acknowledging the influence of such models elsewhere, the book uncovers fascinating perspectives on the practice of museum provision, and reveals how present cultural planning initiatives have often been shaped by historical uses.

Termina el trabajo con el modelo creado en los años setenta, la factoría beaubourg, el museo de la época postindustrial, y el museo postmoderno de los ochenta y sus repercusiones en la nueva museología. Si el Moma de Nueva York, creó una colección enciclopédica del arte del siglo XX, el Musée National d'art Moderne, consiguió implicar a la ciudadanía en el arte moderno. Tan importantes eran las colecciones que se mostraban en su interior como el flujo de visitantes y curiosos que se agolpan en el exterior. Finaliza con una aproximación a los Fonds Regionaux d'art Contemporain y el nacimiento de los Centros de Cultura Contemporánea. Abstract: 1- In the first place, a historic perspective of the modern art museum has been concisely elaborated, that is to say, since institutional grants to artists are created with the celebration of the Halls and the creation of the first museum of living world artists at the Luxembourg Palace of Paris. 2- Subsequently, we focus on the birth of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, MOMA, created in 1929 with only thirteen pieces of art.
