Book Transcultural Encounters amongst Women

Download or read book Transcultural Encounters amongst Women written by Gabrielle Carty and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally women have found recourse in artistic means to interrogate change and upheaval. This volume explores the experiences of women from Spain, Portugal and Latin America in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries who themselves have crossed cultural boundaries or have described this experience in their literature and film. Areas investigated in this collection of essays include the experience of the exiled or the immigrant and their personal or collective response to displacement and adaptation: the transcultural potential of cyberspace for women, how patterns and styles of the fashion industry have crossed borders, how women have crossed canonical cultural boundaries in search of identity and meaning, how global cultural influences have manifested in Hispanic and Lusophone cultural practices and production by or about women, and the challenging question of whether canine writing can be considered a branch of feminist theory. Common to most of the essays are the central issues of identity, values, conflict and interconnectedness and an analysis of the patterns that result from the transcultural encounter of these aspects.

Book excerpt: Hidden behind the portraits of Frida Kahlo is the remarkable story of the artist’s life. It is precisely this combination that attracts the spectator. Frida’s work is a testimony of her life; it is not often that one can understand an artist simply by looking within the frame of their paintings. Frida Kahlo is without any doubt Mexico’s gift to art history. She was just eighteen when a terrible accident changed her life forever, leaving her disabled and in constant pain. But her explosive temper, her unwavering determination and her eagerness gave her the strength to develop her artistic talent. Always at her side was the great Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera. His compulsive womanizing did not prevent Frida from captivating him with her charms, her talent and her intelligence. She quickly learnt to make the most of Diego’s success to discover the world, creating her own legacy along the way and being surrounded by a very close group of attentive friends. Her personal life was stormy: several times she left Diego in order to have relationships with people of both sexes. Nonetheless, Frida and Diego were able to save their deteriorating romance. The history and the paintings that Frida left us reveal the story of a brave woman in constant search of her identity.

Download or read book Mexico City written by Nicholas Caistor and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico City has always been a seat of empire. With its grandiose pretensions, sheer swagger, and staggering proportions, it gives the impression of power exercised over great time and distances. And yet this power has frequently been contested, lending the city a tough, battle-hardened look. At the same time, life in the Mexican capital can be carefree and intoxicating, and the city continues to offer any visitor not only glimpses of past grandeur, but of the fascinating wealth of the culture of Mexico today. This book explores how the city has grown and evolved from the Tenochtitlan city-state of the Aztecs to the capital of the Spanish empire’s “New Spain,” French intervention, revolution, and the newly branded CDMX. Nick Caistor leads us through centuries of history and into the material city of today: from recently constructed museums and shopping malls, to neighborhoods where age-old traditions still appear to be the norm. Whether sampling ice cream at Xochimilco, watching freestyle wrestling at the Arena Mexico, or savoring long Mexican breakfasts, Nick Caistor reveals why Mexico City continues to fascinate and beguile us.

Book Mar a Izquierdo and Frida Kahlo

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nancy Deffebach
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2015-08-15
  • ISBN : 0292772424
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Mar a Izquierdo and Frida Kahlo written by Nancy Deffebach and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: María Izquierdo (1902–1955) and Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) were the first two Mexican women artists to achieve international recognition. During the height of the Mexican muralist movement, they established successful careers as easel painters and created work that has become an integral part of Mexican modernism. Although the iconic Kahlo is now more famous, the two artists had comparable reputations during their lives. Both were regularly included in major exhibitions of Mexican art, and they were invariably the only women chosen for the most important professional activities and honors. In a deeply informed study that prioritizes critical analysis over biographical interpretation, Nancy Deffebach places Kahlo's and Izquierdo's oeuvres in their cultural context, examining the ways in which the artists participated in the national and artistic discourses of postrevolutionary Mexico. Through iconographic analysis of paintings and themes within each artist's oeuvre, Deffebach discusses how the artists engaged intellectually with the issues and ideas of their era, especially Mexican national identity and the role of women in society. In a time when Mexican artistic and national discourses associated the nation with masculinity, Izquierdo and Kahlo created images of women that deconstructed gender roles, critiqued the status quo, and presented more empowering alternatives for women. Deffebach demonstrates that, paradoxically, Kahlo and Izquierdo became the most successful Mexican women artists of the modernist period while most directly challenging the prevailing ideas about gender and what constitutes important art.

Book Diego Rivera

  • Author : Leah Dickerman
  • Publisher : The Museum of Modern Art
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 0870708171
  • Pages : 153 pages

Download or read book Diego Rivera written by Leah Dickerman and published by The Museum of Modern Art. This book was released on 2011 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1931, Diego Rivera was the subject of The Museum of Modern Art's second monographic exhibition, which set attendance records in its five-week run. The Museum brought Rivera to NewYork six weeks before the opening and provided him a studio space in the building. There he produced five 'portable murals' - large blocks of frescoed plaster, slaked lime and wood that feature bold images drawn from Mexican subject matter and address themes of revolution and class inequity. After the opening, to great publicity, Rivera added three more murals, taking on NewYork subjects through monumental images of the urban working class. Published in conjunction with an exhibition that brings together key works from Rivera's 1931 show and related material, this vividly illustrated catalogue casts the artist as a highly cosmopolitan figure who moved between Russia, Mexico and the United States and examines the intersection of art-making and radical politics in the 1930s.
