Download or read book The Banana Tree at the Gate written by Michael Dove and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “Hikayat Banjar,” a native court chronicle from Borneo, characterizes the irresistibility of natural resource wealth to outsiders as “the banana tree at the gate.” Michael R. Dove employs this phrase as a root metaphor to frame the history of resource relations between the indigenous peoples of Borneo and the world system. In analyzing production and trade in forest products, pepper, and especially natural rubber, Dove shows that the involvement of Borneo’s native peoples in commodity production for global markets is ancient and highly successful and that processes of globalization began millennia ago. Dove’s analysis replaces the image of the isolated tropical forest community that needs to be helped into the global system with the reality of communities that have been so successful and competitive that they have had to fight political elites to keep from being forced out.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of the Peoples of Asia and Oceania written by Barbara A. West and published by Facts on File. This book was released on 2009 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedia of the Peoples of Asia and Oceania is a new two-volume A-to-Z reference to the peoples of the Asia-Pacific region east of the Caspian Sea, not including the countries of the Middle East. More than 400 entries cover the major peoples that for a time maintained a cultural identity in the area - from ancient to modern times - describing their history, migration, culture, belief system, social organization, and relationship to other peoples. This accessible resource makes it easy for students to find not only entries on the Han and Jurchens but also on 'Chinese: nationality', describing who they are today with cross-references to the various ancestral peoples. Entries on all large or well-known groups include information on their geography, origins, languages, history, and culture. Subsections cover such topics as subsistence, religion, social and political structures, economy, government, military practices, dwellings and architecture, clothing, transportation, technology, art, music, and literature. The back matter includes a chronology, bibliography, and comprehensive index, as well as several appendixes with useful background information on topics such as kinship systems, religious systems, and subsistence systems.

Download or read book Tamu written by Bryan Koh and published by Marshall Cavendish Cuisine. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little has been written about the cuisines of Borneo, the fourth largest island in the world, occupied by three nations, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. Fascinated by its history, astonishing biodiversity and peoples, Koh spent four years travelling across the island to meet some of the myriad communities contributing to its culinary landscape, from indigenous ethnic groups, like the Iban, Dusun, Murut, Malays and Banjarese, to settlers like the Chinese, Javanese and Bugis. The result is the rich, engaging and kaleidoscopic Tamu: A Guest at the Bornean Table, written as a travelogue with food firmly at its core. More than just culinary information and recipes, Tamu also sheds light on the lives, culture and traditions of the people who make up this fascinating land. It is also rich with information on the lesser-known botanicals that form the foundation of the island's local cuisines. As with his previous three literary endeavours, this book is sumptuous with food and location photographs, all of which were executed by Koh, who also designed the book.

Download or read book Ngaju Religion written by Hans Schärer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Scharer was born at Wadenswil (near Zurich), Switzerland, in 1904. After his school years, he was trained for (Protestant) mis sionary work at the Missionshaus in BiHe. For seven years, 1932-1939, he lived among the Ngaju in southern Borneo; first with the Ngaju speaking people of the Katingan river area, later, for a shorter period. with those living along the Barito. He was granted European leave in 1939, and spent the years 1939-1944 studying Ethnology (as it then was called) under Professor J.P.B. de Josselin de Jong at Leiden University. He went home to Switzerland in 1944, but returned to Leiden in 1946 to complete his studies and defend his Ph. D. thesis on Die Gottesidee der N gadju Dajak in Sud-Borneo. It is this thesis which. published by E.J. Brill, Leiden, in 1946, is now being re-issued in English translation. Soon after, he left once more for the Ngaju territory, as Praeses of the Baseler Mission in south Borneo. He died there suddenly on December 10th, 1947, of blood-poisoning. These few biographical data are not merely of some slight historical interest: they help us to understand the man and his work. The present book is Scharer's only major work to have been published, and for Scharer himself it was, in a way, an experiment.
