Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some players epitomise the ethos of a football club and, for Celtic FC, Murdo MacLeod is one of those players. Still loved by the fans for the way he gave his heart and soul out on the pitch, he won every domestic honour and will forever be remembered for the decisive goal that helped Celtic win the league title in 1979 against bitter rivals Rangers and sparked a deafening roar of the familiar chant of MURDO! MURDO! around the stadium. Murdo's career also took him to Germany to star for Borussia Dortmund where he won both the German Cup and Super Cup in 1989, before returning to home soil to captain Hibernian FC. He also made 20 appearances for Scotland and played in the 1990 World Cup Finals. The highlight of Murdo's coaching career came as Assistant Coach at Celtic under Wim Jansen when, in the 1997-98 season, they won the league and League Cup double, and stopped arch-rivals Rangers' bid to win ten league titles in a row for the first time. It was Wim and Murdo's only season in charge but their contribution to the club that year was of historic significance. In recent years, however, his health has been blighted by a serious heart condition which has led to several months on life support and the loss of his toes, which has forced him to learn how to walk again. Murdo now details this ongoing struggle, the effect it has had on his life and family, and how it feels to have gone from a sporting hero to a desperate struggle for life. This searingly honest and heartfelt memoir by a much-loved football legend will be one of the sports books of the year.

Book Murdo

Download or read book Murdo written by Iain Crichton Smith and published by Birlinn Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murdo Macrae is one of the most extraordinary and fascinating of Iain Crichton Smith's literary creations. Dismissed from his job as a bank teller, Murdo tries to write, but cannot get beyond the first sentence. Murdo has a wild and fertile imagination, and, much to the incomprehension of his long-suffering wife, Janet, sets out to convert all he meets to his bizarre philosophy and unique vision of the world. Murdo's surreal and often hilarious antics, however, mask much deeper questions about his inadequacy in the face of social convention and his own spiritual turmoil. It is this juxtaposition of tragicomic elements, together with the fact that Murdo is in so many ways the alter ego of his creator, that brings real poignancy to these stories and confirms Iain Crichton Smith as one of Scotland's most versatile literary talents of modern times. This volume contains the two publications, "Murdo and Other Stories" and "Thoughts of Murdo." It also includes another substantial piece, the autobiographical "Life of Murdo," which is published in book form here for the first time.

On the other side of the Atlantic, the effects of the Great Depression are inescapable. Prejudice and division are rife, and though they remain bound by a shared past, their lives soon diverge. In an adopted country that is tense with both opportunity and loss, can Mairead and Finlay keep their promises to one another to look only forward, and resist the constant pull of home? From the author of the prize-winning As the Women Lay Dreaming comes a poignant and deeply evocative novel of the 20th-century emigrant experience in the New World. With lyrical prose and masterful storytelling, Murray paints a vivid portrait of the resilient Hebrideans-in-exile who struggled between holding on and letting go.

Book excerpt: Booker Prize winner James Kelman's new novel, Dirt Road, tells the story of a teenage boy who travels with his father from Scotland to Alabama to visit with relatives after the death of his mother. In the American South, he becomes swept up into the world of zydeco and blues. ""A powerful meditation on loss, life, death, and the bond between father and son. . . . Kelman has created a fully–realized, relatable voice that reveals a young man’s urgent need for connection in a time of grief." —Publishers Weekly (starred review) After his mother’s recent death, sixteen–year–old Murdo and his father travel from their home in rural Scotland to Alabama to be with his émigré uncle and American aunt. Stopping at a small town on their way from the airport, Murdo happens upon a family playing zydeco music and joins them, leaving with a gift of two CDs of Southern American songs. On this first visit to the States, Murdo notices racial tension, religious fundamentalism, the threat of severe weather, guns, and aggressive behavior, all unfamiliar to him. Yet his connection to the place strengthens by way of its musical culture. Murdo may be young but he is already a musician. While at their relatives’ home, the grieving father and son experience kindness and kinship but share few words of comfort with each other, Murdo losing himself in music and his reticent and protective dad in books. The aunt, “the very very best,” Murdo calls her, provides whatever solace he receives, until his father comes around in a scene of great emotional release. As James Wood has written of this brilliant writer’s previous work in The New Yorker, “The pleasure, as always in Kelman, is being allowed to inhabit mental meandering and half–finished thoughts, digressions and wayward jokes, so that we are present” with his characters. Dirt Road is a powerful story about the strength of family ties, the consolation of music, and one unforgettable journey from darkness to light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an Edwardian twist on The Tempest, and surprising, earthy, and magical qualities, this irresistible novel is set on the remote, divided Scottish island of Kissack and Skilling, one half of which looks historically and geographically towards Catholic Ireland, the other toward the Protestant north and Scandinavia. In the spring of 1903 a ship explodes as it docks on the island, drowning many of the passengers and crew in the icy waters of Stolnsay harbor. Young, strawberry-blonde-haired Billie Paxton is among the only survivors. Clumsy, illiterate, and suddenly alone, Billie will not say why, before the explosion, she jumped from ship to shore, and so falls under the immediate suspicion of her fellow passenger, Murdo Hesketh, and his cousin and employer, Lord Hallowhulme, who owns the island—and has controversial plans for improving the lives of its inhabitants. Gloriously inventive and vividly atmospheric, Billie’s Kiss conjures up a way of life hurtling toward a brave new world in an enchanting novel that brings together murder and eugenics, progress, prejudice, and the loss of innocence.
