Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing account of Polish cooperation with Nazis in WWII—a “grim, compelling [and] significant scholarly study” (Kirkus Reviews). Between 1942 and 1943, thousands of Jews escaped the fate of German death camps in Poland. As they sought refuge in the Polish countryside, the Nazi death machine organized what they called Judenjagd, meaning hunt for the Jews. As a result of the Judenjagd, few of those who escaped the death camps would survive to see liberation. As Jan Grabowski’s penetrating microhistory reveals, the majority of the Jews in hiding perished as a consequence of betrayal by their Polish neighbors. Hunt for the Jews tells the story of the Judenjagd in Dabrowa, Tarnowska, a rural county in southeastern Poland. Drawing on materials from Polish, Jewish, and German sources created during and after the war, Grabowski documents the involvement of the local Polish population in the process of detecting and killing the Jews who sought their aid. Through detailed reconstruction of events, “Grabowski offers incredible insight into how Poles in rural Poland reacted to and, not infrequently, were complicit with, the German practice of genocide. Grabowski also, implicitly, challenges us to confront our own myths and to rethink how we narrate British (and American) history of responding to the Holocaust” (European History Quarterly).

Book excerpt: Yeardley Love was a star athlete and student with her whole life ahead of her. Born into a world of privilege, Yeardley was exceptionally modest and generous. She was adored by many, especially the members of her lacrosse team at the University of Virginia, where she won the heart of another lacrosse player: George Huguely V. As champion athletes, Yeardley and George were a celebrity couple at UVA. But George's hard partying, hostile behavior, and jealousy proved too much for Yeardley. Then, just one month before graduation, Yeardley's lifeless body was found in her campus apartment... According to an affidavit, George admitted to bashing down her door and hitting her head against a wall. Did he intend to kill her? His lawyer claimed Yeardley's death was at most an accident. But as investigators uncovered more about George's past, they learned he was no stranger to violence: He was involved in at least two prior episodes of alcohol-fueled assault. And despite George's elite origins and seemingly perfect young life, police insist he was a time bomb about to explode...This is the true story of two young lovers and one All-American Murder.

Book excerpt: The Gory Stories Behind The Murder Ballads Cheerfully vulgar, revelling in gore, and always with an eye on the main chance, murder ballads are tabloid newspapers set to music, carrying word of the latest ‘orrible murders to an insatiable public. Victims are bludgeoned, stabbed or shot in every verse and killers often hanged, but the songs themselves never die. Instead, they mutate – morphing to suit local place names as they criss cross the Atlantic and continue to fascinate each generation’s biggest musical stars. Paul Slade traces this fascinating genre’s history through eight of its greatest songs. Stagger Lee’s “biographers” alone include Duke Ellington, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Dr John, The Clash and Nick Cave. No two tell his story in quite the same way. Covering eight classic murder ballads, including “Knoxville Girl”, “Tom Dooley” and “Frankie & Johnny”, Slade investigates the real-life murder which inspired each song and traces its musical development down the decades. Billy Bragg, The Bad Seeds’ Mick Harvey, Laura Cantrell, Rennie Sparks of The Handsome Family and a host of other leading musicians add their own insights.

Book The Orchid Murder

Book excerpt: May 1973, Minneapolis florist Bob Nachtsheim was murdered by shotgun blast. The assailant left behind an overturned flat of orchids and a spreading pool of blood. Twin Cities media dubbed it the Orchid Murder, but the crime was never solved. Years later, Norm Wartnick, Nachtsheim's former employer, found himself sued by the victim's widow. His attorney made egregious errors in Wartnick's defense, and in 1986 Wartnick heard a jury declare him responsible for the wrongful death of Nachtsheim. The three-million-dollar civil judgment against the hard-working family man forced him to sell his family business and branded him a murderer. Jerry Snider and Joe Friedberg, two of Minnesota's top trial attorneys, were incensed by Wartnick's plight. Knowing they would battle enormous peer pressure and even greater odds, Snider and Friedberg placed their careers on the line in a six-year struggle against a judicial system determined to justify an attorney's betrayal of his client. In 2007, Ray decided he wanted his story told by someone he could talk with eye-to-eye. Delving into Ray's story, Snider and Friedberg's passionate pursuit of justice was understandable, for also involved were two families: the Nachtsheims and the Wartnicks-one splintered by bitter greed, the other strengthened through adversity. The Orchid Murder, for the first time, tells of Snider and Friedberg's determination to resolve a life-destroying judgment against an innocent man, and how one family's belief in each other and in the truth preserved hope during desperate times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply reported, gripping narrative of injustice, exoneration, and the lifelong impact of incarceration, Beyond Innocence is the poignant saga of one remarkable life that sheds vitally important light on the failures of the American justice system at every level In June 1985, a young Black man in Winston-Salem, N.C. named Darryl Hunt was falsely convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of a white copyeditor at the local paper. Many in the community believed him innocent and crusaded for his release even as subsequent trials and appeals reinforced his sentence. Finally, in 2003, the tireless efforts of his attorney combined with an award-winning series of articles by Phoebe Zerwick in the Winston-Salem Journal led to the DNA evidence that exonerated Hunt. Three years later, the acclaimed documentary, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, made him known across the country and brought his story to audiences around the world. But Hunt’s story was far from over. As Zerwick poignantly reveals, it is singularly significant in the annals of the miscarriage of justice and for the legacy Hunt ultimately bequeathed. Part true crime drama, part chronicle of a life cut short by systemic racism, Beyond Innocence powerfully illuminates the sustained catastrophe faced by an innocent person in prison and the civil death nearly everyone who has been incarcerated experiences attempting to restart their lives. Freed after nineteen years behind bars, Darryl Hunt became a national advocate for social justice, and his case inspired lasting reforms, among them a law that allows those on death row to appeal their sentence with evidence of racial bias. He was a beacon of hope for so many—until he could no longer bear the burden of what he had endured and took his own life. Fluidly crafted by a master journalist, Beyond Innocence makes an urgent moral call for an American reckoning with the legacies of racism in the criminal justice system and the human toll of the carceral state.

Book Clovis Road

Download or read book Clovis Road written by and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-21 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year, 2013, marks the 70th anniversary of the Littlefield double murder of a young doctor and his wife and 100th anniversary of the founding of Littlefield. The recounting of the epic history of the murder of Dr. Roy Hunt in 1943, as we researched it, culminated in the first edition of Clovis Road. We felt it was an imperfect success. It got the riveting story out to a new generation, but it only answered some, but not all, the lingering questions for the Texans of 1943. We can announce that a motion picture project is now in development by a film production company, Mulligan Life, headed up by Ms. Anna Nupson. Many people from all over the United States came forward with treasured papers, secret stories, and photographs about family and old friends involved in the Hunt murder. So, we wish to thank the anonymous citizens of Littlefield who have come forth as well as the local newspaper publisher. Also, the families of W. R. Newton, and Jim Thomas provided new amazing details. More citizens of Cameron, some named, like a former district attorney, and some who want to remain unnamed, came forward with more of the story. Volunteer investigators have helped with research and photography. Richly revealing new information and interviews since 2009 require a second edition. With this rewrite we wish to sharpen the key characters and shift the focus of the motive of the terrible murder. We, and the readers who responded, have done both. After three more years of research there are new photos of Roy, Ruth, Dr. Billy, Mae, Mr. LaFont and Mr. Jim Thomas. Also, there is a new chapter, many more illustrations, 232 total pages (212 text versus 169 in first edition) , a new font, more than a dozen new stories, and 4500 words of new text.
