Marion Todd, author of Old Bones Lie Darkness lies at the heart of this family... In 1959 Milly starts her new life as a housemaid at Rutherford House, working for the aristocratic Rutherford-Percy clan. Entranced by her new mistress, Vivienne, she becomes deeply embroiled in the household and the keeper of dark secrets the family conceals beneath the mansion’s grand exterior. In the present day, Christie is working as a psychiatric nurse when she meets troubled patient Lillian Percy, Vivienne’s granddaughter and heiress to Rutherford House. They soon bond over the loss of their mothers – Lillian’s died when she was a child; Christie’s mysteriously disappeared over twenty years ago – and Christie finds herself increasingly fascinated by Lillian’s family and their imposing ancestral home. As Christie learns more about the Rutherford-Percys, she finds a shocking clue that could help her uncover what happened to her own mother. Desperate for answers, Christie puts her job, her family and even her very life on the line. But how much of the truth does she really want to know? Book excerpt: The marriage of Rupert and Sarah is on the rocks and their friends Charles and Madge, both of whom are lawyers, agree to handle the divorce. After the curtain has been up a few minutes, Rupert forgets his lines, has a brain storm and threatens to kill Charles in full view of the audience because he's been having an affair off stage, with Rupert's real wife, Madge. Quite true as it happens. The rest of the cast try to ignore the incident and forge ahead with the original play but Rupert picks up a knife and advances on Charles, who is forced to take cover in a large cabin trunk which is on the set at the time. A real life marital comedy now evolves. The situation is further complicated when the actor playing the old father, Edward, makes his entrance. He is ageing Shakspearean star, once famous for his King Lear but now an alcoholic on the skids. He happens to have asked his new agent to the performance that night. Edward is blissfully unaware that the play has switched from art to life. Out of loyalty to a fellow actor, the rest of the cast do their best to accommodate the poor chap, but he gradually begins to crack up, especially as some of his cues are coming from a cabin trunk. The play is a light hearted tilt at the complete theatricality of stage folk.

Book excerpt: Winner of the prestigious American College Theatre Festival, this play portrays the tumultuous marriage of the brilliant modern poet Dylan Thomas. It opens with Gaitlan toasting his casket as she transports it back across the ocean following his last American tour. It then moves to the the point of first decline, when Dylan comes home drunk with one more arm broken and learns that their furniture has just been repossessed. There are not more publishers' advances and no more resources, so he decides on "one last pillaging of America." This time Caitlin insists on going with him "Where?" "To the States." "Yes, the United ones," because she has discovered some love letters from a woman Dylan met on his last trip state side. We follow them through an abortion, through drunken bouts in the States, and finally to his final collapse at a poetry reading. Back aboard ship, Caitlin reads the last poem and silently closes the casket.
